Part I Monthly Activity Log August 2014 I arrived in Seoul on 25 th August, just one day before the orientation. Since I did not have an on-campus accommodation and I could not find a place to stay Page 3 before arrival, I stayed in a guesthouse near Sinchon for the first 4 days. Luckily, I find a haksukjip ( 학숙집 ) near Yonsei University at the end. But the struggle in Seoul did not end with settling down in a haksukjip. I was quite sick on the third day there. However, my friends were travelling to Busan and I could not seek help from them. I went to clinic at Student Union building to see the doctor and get medicine. I were much better after an injection. September 2014 School starts! I was excited about everything in the new environment. I was enrolled in Korean Language Intensive Class and learning Korean was one of my best experience in Korea! In September, Chuseok ( 추석 ) which we know it as Mid-autumn festival is an important festival in Korea. People in Seoul will go back to their hometown and enjoy their time with family. I also chose to travel to Busan during the Chuseok holiday with my friends. I had a great time there! There is a beautiful beach called Haeundae and you can enjoy seafood in Jagalchi Market. Since it is the first month of semester, the workload is not that heavy. I spent a lot time exploring Seoul and meeting new friends, like visiting Lotte World and Noryangjin Fish Market and also having picnic near Hangang with some local buddies. October 2014 Although the third week of October was mid-term week, there was a much bigger and more important event for students in Yonsei University. That is Yon-Ko jeon, sports competition between Yonsei University and Korea University. Yon-Ko jeon was a unique experience since you would see how big the event is and how students were greatly involved in the event. Everywhere in Sinchon was full of decorations with slogans for Yonsei. Students even danced and sang in the street of Sinchon like a big party. Except Yeon-Ko jeon, I also spent some time travelling to Jeju before the weather was too cold. I have been to Udo Island which is a place with beautiful scenery and tried famous Black Pork Belly in Jeju. Jeju is so amazing with its natural environment

and yummy food. However, the traffic there was not convenient at all. A lot of time we had to depend on taxi. Midterm finally came after 2 week of enjoyment from Yon-Ko jeon and Jeju trip. I would say the midterm was not a very difficult one if you spent time on revision and attend the classes. Also, October is a good for photo taking because fall foliage is everywhere in the campus and also they city. Page 4 November 2014 After midterm, it is time to explore Seoul again. I followed an official Facebook page called 서울시 (Seoul) to find what is new, fun and interesting in Seoul. I went to Seoul Lantern Festival near Cheonggyecheon. I joined a JSA tour to visit the Imjingak which is an area near North Korea. I also went to concerts in Seoul to watch my idol performance. While enjoying time in Seoul, I worked hard for projects as well. Similar to UST, November is time for projects in Yonsei as well. There were some meetings and presentations for projects. November could be the busiest month because projects were here and you also have to grasp the time to enjoy your time in Seoul! December 2014 Weather was very cold in December. Usually, the first snow comes early December. Snowing is fun but the floor can be very slippery. Final exam was from 2 nd to 3 rd week in December. After exam, this was the end of semester. I spent one more week in Seoul before coming back to Hong Kong. I went to ice skilling and ice fishing outside Seoul. Seoul is also a good place to feel the Christmas atmosphere. I went to outdoor ice-skating rink near Seoul Plaza and saw Christmas light there. Also, there was a lot of discount and promotion around Christmas time! It would be a good time for you to prepare souvenir and do some shopping for yourself and your friends and family in Hong Kong.

Part II - General Exchange Information Visa Procedures D-2 Visa is what we need for exchange in South Korea. The application procedure is easy and you can refer the most updated details on the embassy website and the cost is only HKD480. You can find a document list for D-2 Visa online. One thing to note is that they only accept official transcript. You better apply one in advance since it takes time for ARRO to issue the transcript. I need to re-submit the official transcript because I thought they would accept the unofficial one before. If you have no time to apply the VISA yourself (for my case, my working time is exactly the same as office hour of embassy), you could ask your family to help as well. Page 5 Orientation There is one-day orientation organized by Yonsei University and you would collect your student ID card and documents for applying Alien Registration Card. Except the university, I also joined buddy program by Yonsei Global. And there was one more orientation by them. They will introduce some activities for exchange student and you also met your cell leader and members on the orientation. They will provide city tour for exchange students as well. If you want to know more exchange friends, you could join them. But I think those city tours are a little bit pricey. Accommodation As I mentioned before, I was the unlucky one that I was not allocated an on-campus accommodation. As I knew, there were too many exchange students this semester and they did not have enough place for all exchange students. To avoid the situation, I suggest you apply the accommodation once they are open for application. DO NOT think that accommodation is guaranteed for exchange students. Luckily, it is not difficult to find an accommodation near university. There are many choices for students, like goshiwon ( 고시원 ), haksukjip ( 학숙집 ), one room and so on. After living in haksukjip, I would now say I prefer living in haksukjip. There is food provided and I can taste local and family food from ajummas (middle-aged or married women). Living in haksukjip is also common for Korean students if their hometown is not in Seoul and a special experience for me during exchange. Last but not least, it is

cheaper than living on-campus. Teaching and Assessment Method You can see Yonsei portal as my portal at UST and YSCEC as LMES at UST. I Page 6 suggest you log in to these websites with Internet Explorer since they are not fully functioned with Chrome (actually it does for many Korean websites). You can find announcements, lecture notes and submit assignments through YSCEC. Course Registration The course registration is competitive as it does at UST. Be quick and well-planned before the registration. OIA in Yonsei will send you a detailed guideline on how to register courses as well. However, there is no waitlist system in Yonsei University. If you cannot enroll in the courses, you have to attend the lecture and ask your professor to sign a form to let you in. The procedures here are quite different from UST. And in most of the cases, it is easy for professors to sign the form and let you in. It is common for students to ask their professors to sign the form in Yonsei. I took 4 courses including Traditional Korean Society and Modernization (3 credits), Free Trade Agreements (3 credits), New Product Marketing (3 credits) and Intensive Korean Language - Level 1 (6 credits). Expenses Item Amount (in HKD) Accommodation 9,930 Air Ticket (tax included) 3,678 Visa 480 Food, Travelling, Shopping 37,470 Total 51,558 Food Except spicy, Korean food is too seasoned. They cook every dishes with garlic and chili. I always have chewing gum after every meal. If you do not like spicy food, it is hard for you to find non-spicy food in Korea. You can opt for Japanese or Western style food and they are not hard to find in Korea. But they are more expensive than Korean food.

Transportation T-money is like Octopus card in Hong Kong but you can only use it for transport. Yonsei University is in Sinchon which is a very convenient area in Seoul. There are two subway stations near the school: Sinchon and Ewha Women University Page 7 Station. Taking bus is also convenient in Seoul when you can read a little bit Korean and know how to use app: Naver map and Seoul Bus to check which bus you should take and which station to get off. I travelled more frequently by bus when I know how to since you do not have to change line in subway. Sometimes, you have to walk a lot when changing line in Seoul subway. Climate September is still like summer but it could be cool at night. However, in October, you do not have to use air-con at all and from mid-october, I would say it is like winter in Hong Kong. November and December are cold but it is easy to adapt to the weather when you live there. It is not as cold as you see from the temperature. Communication In general, not many people speak English outside campus. You better know some basic Korean vocabs to prepare yourself in Seoul. If you are in tourist spots like cosmetic shop or duty-free shop, you could speak Mandarin. Part III Checklist - Adaptors - Medicine and herbal tea powder - Laptop - Hairdryer - Passport photo *You could bring less clothes with you if you plan to do shopping in Seoul. My friends and I bought quite a lot and we need to send our stuff back to Hong Kong through post office. If you would like to know more about my exchange experience in Yonsei University, feel free to get my contact from SBM Exchange Team by ing at Good luck and have fun!
