1 RECORD GROUP LACEFIELD/VOELKEL COLLECTION oversize boxes Scope and Content Note This collection of manuals, books, photographs, postcards, and other memorabilia are a rich documentation of World War I and in providing a sense of history of a man devoted to military service to his country and a family's interest in preserving that history. Sergeant Stephen Voelkel was born in New Orleans, LA on December 27, 1896 and enlisted the United States Army in During his service in World War I, Sergeant Voelkel served in the 1 54th and 156 Infantry Regiments (both regiments were junior units of the 39th Delta Division); 335th Field Artillery- Battery C; F Company, Infantry Regiment; and, the 5th Regimental (Mississippi) Division. As his last assignment, he served as a member of Casual (Causality?) Company 3986 while in France during WWI until his discharge in He returned to Louisiana that same year. This collection is filled with photographs and memorabilia that were collected by the Lacefields within the last fifty years. The primary donor, Eric Lacefield, was born in New Orleans on June 1, 1943, retired as a Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and as a Tech Sergeant in the Louisiana Air National Guard (Mr. Louis A. Muhleisen, who was Florence's first husband died in 1976.) Florence Voelkel Muhleisen later met and married Eric Lacefield in Florence was the daughter of Sergeant Voelkel; she was born while Sergeant Voelkel served in France during World War I. Florence Voelkel Muhleisen Lacefield was a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. LTCG Florence Lacefield died in LT Eric Lacefield donated this collection in the memory of his beloved wife, Florence, and her father, Stephen Voelkel. Mr. Lacefield also donated the Lacefield/Muhleisen (World War II and Civil Defense) Collection, which is also located in this facility, in her memory as well. The donor has placed not restrictions on the copying or duplication of items within the collection.
