2 4-H SCHOOL PROJECT ENROLLMENT INSTRUCTIONS 1. Complete the enrollment sheet including every student. Be sure to include yourself in the final tally at the bottom. NOTE: These sheets will be used to determine the number of project materials your class room will receive. 2. Complete the total at the top of the sheet. 3. If this is more convenient, it is ok for our records 4. The Extension Office will be open until 4:30 P.M. for picking up materials on the day prior to your indicated start date. Please allow a minimum of 22 days for embryology. Incubators must be turned on 24 hours prior to setting your eggs in order to have the temperature set correctly 5. Mark your project selection.

3 To: All 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, Special Education and gifted program teachers Re: 4-H Program Opportunity Dear Teachers, Once again, the 4-H Development Committee is offering all 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, Special Education and gifted program students in Venango County schools the opportunity to participate in a 4-H project. We will need to assess a cost for materials due the rising cost of materials. This cost is $25.00 per classroom and will help to cover the cost of the educational materials you will be provided. Please make checks payable to PSCE Venango County and return them with your project enrollment forms. If it is a problem to enclose the fee with the form, please contact us and we will make other arrangements for payment. Likewise, if it is a problem for your school to cover this fee, please contact me at the Clarion Extension Office to discuss additional options. Please do not let the fee be a barrier for you to offer these programs to your students. The enclosed paper describes the project opportunities we are offering schools. Please read this information over and decide if you feel your students can benefit from these experiences. You should also note there are a few projects with restrictions based on a first come, first served basis. I am available to train, or demonstrate new materials to any interested teachers in your school system. I believe the materials we have selected will be useful in the classroom. All projects are research based as they are developed by curriculum specialists at land-grant universities including Penn State University. The majority of the selections will work in conjunction with a science curriculum. Some have been selected for general classroom use or use with a social science curriculum. The embryology works well with science or health classes. All the projects have hands-on activities that help students "learn by doing." These activities work well as teacher demonstrations also. We are working on aligning the projects with the state standards to enable you to better determine which projects meet your classroom needs. Your school districts have been contacted for permission to offer these programs. Please complete the enclosed enrollment form. You will not be permitted to pick up materials unless we have this information. (Note: This information is for our state reports and is only used for budgetary considerations for the following year. The list is kept strictly confidential, and is not used as a mailing list in any way.) Each classroom is requested to sign up for only one project (the exceptions are those interested in embryology). 4 4-H School Program Project Opportunities Available on first come first served basis Embryology About 4-H and Penn State Cooperative Extension 4-H is a non-formal educational youth development program of Penn State Extension. The research of Penn State University and the Extension system have produced these programs for you and your students. Penn State Extension is funded cooperatively by federal, state, and county governments. Our 4-H school programs offer a broad array of hands-on, action oriented projects to help you broaden your curriculum in human development and science. These programs are not designed to replace current curriculums, but rather to enhance and broaden the learning opportunities. All of these programs come with project and program materials free of charge to you unless otherwise noted. 4-H school curriculums teach life skills such as leadership, citizenship, communication, decision making, self-confidence, and more. Penn State Extension youth development programs help young people become self-directed, productive and contributing member of a diverse society. School programs offer your students a learn by doing experience that will challenge your students and provide them an opportunity to develop their own personal skills. What do I receive in a project packet? Most projects include a teacher s guide, student workbooks, and project support materials. Classroom technical support is available for all projects. 5 Life Science Projects Embryology The embryology project is designed to help members understand the theory and principles of reproduction. Separate sections in this project will help members to learn about the avian egg, study the reproductive system and fertilization, comprehend the incubation process, make and use an incubator, incubate and hatch eggs, understand embryo development and observe live chicks. Eggs and an incubator are included with the member materials. This project will require 22 days to complete. Eggs will need to be set in the classroom on a Tuesday or Wednesday so that the chicks do not hatch on a weekend. We can accommodate your dates, but we will need a minimum of 2 weeks to order fertile eggs and class materials. Please indicate your expected start date on your order materials.
