Final project report: Clean Water for Schools in Uganda Project, Year 3 Final project report Respectfully submitted to: Saskatchewan Water and Waste Water Association February 2016 I ntroduction WaterAid Canada would like to take this opportunity to thank the Saskatchewan Water and Waste Water Association for your generous donation in support of our Clean Water for Schools in Uganda Project. WaterAid Canada is delighted to share this final report with you, outlining all completed project activities and highlighting the impact of your tremendous support. Ensuring that students are able to get an education in a safe and healthy learning environment is an important first step in breaking the devastating cycle of poverty that afflicts the communities we work in. A huge barrier to education is removed when students gain access to safe drinking water, private toilets and hygiene education. With these basic services available on school grounds, we see attendance rates increase; drop-out rates decrease; academic attainment improve and most of all we see happier, healthier children getting the education they deserve. Thank you for investing in the futures of Uganda s children! Project summary The third year of the Clean Water for Schools in Uganda Project was a 12-month project (October 2014 September 2015) that aimed to bring clean water and safe sanitation facilities, along with hygiene and health education to 11 primary schools attended by just under 7,000 school children. Working in partnership with three local non-governmental organizations Community Integrated Development (CIDI); Joint Effort to Save the Environment (JESE); and Voluntary Action for Development (VAD) the project was implemented in the capital of Kampala, the rural Kyenjojo District and the periurban Wakiso District of Uganda. CIDI implemented project activities in four urban schools in Kampala, JESE implemented activities in three rural schools in Kyenjojo District and VAD implemented activities in four peri-urban schools in Wakiso District. Where we work in Uganda! The capital city, Kampala and the rural Wakiso and Kyenjojo districts. 2 The objectives of the Clean Water for Schools in Uganda Project, Year 3 were: To provide a clean and safe water supply at 11 primary schools To construct student-friendly and safe toilet blocks at 11 primary schools To build handwashing facilities at 11 primary schools To foster local capacity development of our partner organizations and the people and communities in Kampala, Kyenjojo and Wakiso Districts The Clean Water for Schools in Uganda Project, Year 3 was part of a five-year program jointly funded by WaterAid Canada and the Government of Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. Every dollar donated to the project was matched at a rate of 3:1 which means that every $1 turned into $4. The challenge Nicknamed the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is a small yet highly fertile country that holds much promise. Following several decades of brutal internal conflict, most Ugandans have enjoyed peace and stability since the late 1980s. However, widespread poverty remains a major challenge. The majority of Uganda s population earns less than US $2 per day, making life a daily struggle. Millions of Ugandans lack safe water and basic toilets 8 million people, or a quarter of the population do not have access to a safe water supply. A further 32 million people do not have access to adequate sanitation. Incredibly, over 8,000 children die every year from diarrhoea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation in Uganda. With millions unable to access basic sanitation and safe water supplies, the impact on public health is shocking and widespread. The prevalence of water-and sanitation-related diseases, such as diarrhoea, cholera and skin and eye infections are an issue that is made worse by a shortage of medical staff and health facilities. The devastating impacts of the water and sanitation crisis in Uganda are far reaching. Beyond the immediate and acutely-felt impacts on community health, lack of water and sanitation hinder nearly every aspect of development, from access to education to gender equality and economic growth. The water and sanitation conditions in Ugandan primary schools is dire 67% of Ugandan schools do not have adequate sanitation facilities and it is estimated that for every one toilet stall at a school there are 66 students. With 49% of the Ugandan population aged 15 or under, this lack of vital facilities and services is having a huge impact on the future development of the country. Ensuring that students are able to get an education in a safe and healthy learning environment is an important step to breaking the cycle of poverty. Project achievements WaterAid Canada is happy to report that all planned project activities have been completed at the targeted schools. All 11 primary schools and their nearly 7,000 students now have access to a clean water supply, safe sanitation facilities and improved hygiene. 2

Final project report: The 11 schools which now have access to clean water, safe sanitation and improve hygiene education are: Mutundwe Church of Uganda Primary School Mutumgo-Kitiko Church of Uganda Primary School Namirembe Infant Primary School St. Peters Buwambo Primary School Kabowa Church of Uganda Primary School Kiregesa Primary School Cardinal Nsubuga Memorial Primary School Kyabaranga Primary School Kigogwa Umea Primary School Rwentuuha Primary School Kigo Prisons Primary School Clean and safe water supply Four 10,000 litre rainwater harvesting tanks were constructed. Kabowa Church of Uganda Primary School received two tanks as it was determined that Namirembe Primary School had a sufficient number of tanks and Kabowa was in dire need of a second tank to meet the needs of the school. Mutundwe PS and Cardinal Nsubuga Community School each received one rainwater harvesting tank. Three 20,000 litre rainwater harvesting tanks were constructed at the three Kyenjojo District schools. Four 20,000 litre rainwater harvesting tanks were constructed at the Wakiso District schools, one at each school. 3,0000L handwashing stations were constructed at each of the four schools. In addition to the permanent rainwater harvesting tanks, all 11 schools are provided with portable water vessels that can be used for drinking water or handwashing. The new rain water harvesting tank at Mutumgo-Kitiko Church of Uganda Primary School 3

Student-friendly and safe sanitation facilities Pour-flush toilet blocks were constructed at three of the four Kampala schools. Each of the three schools has a four stalls for boys including one for children with disabilities. The girls at each of the three schools have a three stalls with each school receiving one washing room. Namirembe Infant Primary School had two washing rooms constructed in order to meet the needs of the number of children. o Due to a delay at the beginning of the year regarding new rules around construction with CIDI and the Kampala City Authority, Namirembe PS mobilized resources to build their own latrine block. The Head Teacher and Sanitation Management Committee managed to build a 16 stance facility half for boys and half for girls. The girls portion of the latrine block will also include a washing room. Five-stall VIP latrine blocks were constructed at each of the three Kyenjojo District schools, one for boys and one for girls. The girls blocks will have accessible stalls for people with disabilities and a shower room and the boys will have a urinal. Two five-stall VIP latrine blocks were constructed at the four Wakiso District schools - one block is for girls and the other is for boys. The boys latrine block has a urinal and the girls a bathing room both the girls and boys latrine block each includes a stall for people with disabilities. Students standing outside of a completed Latrine block at Mutungo-Kitiko Primary School 4

Handwashing facilities Three 300 litre handwashing stations with two taps each have been constructed at the three Kampala schools that received latrines. In addition to the permanent handwashing station, each school was also provided with ten, 60 litre, and handwashing vessels that are distributed throughout the school compounds. Concrete handwashing stations with four taps each are located adjacent to the latrine blocks at all five Kyenjojo District schools. One hand washing facility was constructed per Wakiso District school each received a 3,000L water storage tank. Hygiene education and promotion School Health Clubs (SHCs) were formed and received health and hygiene training at all 11 schools. SHCs are responsible for promoting more effective hygiene and health practices to their classmates, families and communities. Art, sports and drama were used to convey the importance of good hygiene practices, like frequent handwashing and proper usage of latrines. An example of the hand washing facilities outside of the latrines built by CIDI in Kampala In total there are 142 SHC members at the four Kampala schools; 79 SHC members at the three Kyenjojo District schools; and 165 SHC members at the four Wakiso schools. All School Health Clubs are made up of both girls and boys almost equally, with girls having slightly higher involvement rates at a number of schools. School Management Committees (SMCs) were formed at each of the 11 schools. The SMCs are responsible for the management (including operation and maintenance) of the new water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructures at their schools. The SMCs also supervise and assist in hygiene promotion and education activities. In total, there are 47 SMC members at the four Kampala schools; 37 SMC members at the three Kyenjojo District schools; and 48 SMC A photograph of a hygiene and sanitation promotion session at one of the schools in Kyenjojo with JESE A photograph of one of the School Health Clubs in Kampala with CIDI 5

members at the four Wakiso District schools. Local capacity development At the beginning of the project, baseline surveys were carried out by our partner organizations at each of the year 3 schools. These surveys collected important data about pre-intervention water, sanitation and hygiene conditions, and along with the environmental and gender analyses that were conducted, helped to ensure that the most appropriate and sustainable infrastructures and educational activities were carried out. Throughout the project, mobilization and engagement meetings with key stakeholders (partner organizations, appropriate government agencies, students, teachers, staff, parents and surrounding community members) were carried out. These meetings helped to increase the local capacity of all concerned parties by ensuring involvement in the planning and implementation of project activities. The latrines were almost full and we were struggling with children s health issues due to the large enrolment. Now I have two other people (patrons and SHC members) with whom I can coordinate hygiene and sanitation affairs in the school unlike before when most of the load was on myself - Head teacher- Rwentuuha P/S, Mr. Gumisiriza Vincent. Pictured left are the head teacher (forward) and two School Health Club patrons. 7
