1 LESSON 7 Humanity Bible Basis: Genesis 4:1 16; Matthew 18:10 14 Key Verse: John 3:16: God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. Resource: Believe Storybook Bible, Chapter 7, Humanity Master Supplies List Believe Storybook Bible PowerPoint slides or printable posters of illustrations Some type of viewing device that will alter an image, such as binoculars, a telescope, or thick glasses Family Page (one per child) Optional Supplies You will need the following supplies based on which option(s) you choose in STEP 3 Explore More: Option 1: Green, blue, pink, and brown tissue paper cut into small squares (several per child); cotton balls (one per child); glue; construction paper Option 2: Medium-to-large-size container (make sure it isn t clear), dry rice, small objects to hide in rice (one per child) Option 4: Crayons or markers, Let s Color! sheet (one per child) Option 6: Two puppets

2 STEP 1 Come Together (10 min) Supplies: Set of binoculars, a small telescope, thick glasses, or anything that could alter an image when looked through GATHER the children. ASK the children, one at a time, to look through the viewing device you have provided. ASK, Can you see clearly? (Take responses) GIVE the children different items to look at and take their responses about what the items look like through the device as opposed to looking at them naturally. SAY, Things can seem different, depending on how you look at them. INSTRUCT the students to focus on an item in the room, and then ask them to cover one eye while still looking at the item. Then ask them to look at the same item while covering the other eye. ASK, Does the item seem to move, or does it look different when you look with one eye and then the other? (Take responses) SAY, Different people see things in different ways. Everyone has different eyes and different thoughts in their heads, right? SAY, Today we are going to learn about two brothers who looked at things in different ways, and how God saw each of them differently too. KEY VERSE REVIEW this week s Key Verse. You may want to repeat the verse slowly a few times until the children are able to say the verse from memory NOTE: You may also choose to review last week s Key Verse together. 3 STEP 2 Hear the Story (15 min) Supplies: Believe Storybook Bible, PowerPoint slides or printable posters of illustrations INTRODUCTION SAY, Today we will be learning about two brothers who have a sad story. SAY, We already learned that things can seem very different, depending on how you look at them. Now we will learn about how two brothers looked at God and how God looked at them. SAY, The two brothers were Cain and Abel. Abel was a man who wanted to please God. So when you hear the name Abel in the story, I want you to say, Yes, sir. PRACTICE this with the children. CONTINUE, Cain, however, did not always obey God. When you hear the name Cain in the story, I want you to say, No, sir. PRACTICE this with the children. SAY, Both Cain and Abel were loved by God, even though they behaved very differently. Did you know that God loves all people, no matter what? CONTINUE, We are also going to hear a story about a shepherd who left his entire flock of sheep to look for one little sheep that was lost. Just like that shepherd loved every single one of his sheep, God loves each and every one of us, and will go looking for us if we wander away and become lost. READ CHAPTER 7 READ aloud the story script below or chapter 7, Humanity, from the Believe Storybook Bible. SHOW the illustrations included with this curriculum on PowerPoint slides or printable posters. THE STORY OF CAIN AND ABEL When God looks at people, he doesn t just see what s on the outside. God can see into our hearts. What does God see when he looks in our hearts? God sees our sin, but he also sees his wonderful creation. After the first sin, Adam and Eve left God s beautiful garden. 4 They had two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer and his brother Abel was a shepherd. One day, the brothers brought gifts to God. Cain brought some of his grains and fruit. Abel brought his best lamb. God was happy with Abel s gift. It was his very best lamb. But God was not happy with Cain s gift. Cain had kept the best grains and fruit for himself. He gave God what was left over. Cain was angry that God did not like his gift. He was jealous of his brother. He invited Abel for a walk. When they were all alone, Cain killed his brother. God saw Cain s sin. You can t stay here and be a farmer anymore, God said. You will wander from place to place. God still loved Cain and protected him. Even though Cain had sinned, he was still God s child. When God sees sin in our hearts, it makes him sad. But God will never give up on us. We are his children and he sent his Son Jesus to save us. THE STORY OF THE LOST SHEEP How does God feel when one of his children wanders away? He is like a good shepherd who goes looking for a lost sheep. We know that God is a caring shepherd because Jesus told his followers this story: A shepherd had one hundred sheep. One sheep wandered away. The shepherd was sad and worried. His sheep was in danger! What could he do? The shepherd left the flock of ninety-nine sheep to look for the one that was lost. He searched and searched. He did not want to lose even one sheep! Finally, he found his sheep. He was so happy! He did not scold his sheep. He brought it back to the flock. God is like this good shepherd. He loves every one of us. We are special to him. He never wants to lose us. If we wander away from God, he will come looking for us. REVIEW CAIN AND ABEL ASK, What does God see in our hearts? (He sees sin; he sees his wonderful creation) ASK, How did Cain sin? (He didn t give his best to God; he killed his brother) LESSON 7: Humanity PRESCHOOL 4

5 ASK, How did God feel about Cain s sin? (He punished Cain but still cared for him) REVIEW THE LOST SHEEP ASK, How is God like a good shepherd? (He loves and cares for us; he will search for us if we wander away) PRAY, We thank you and praise you, God, for seeing inside our hearts and seeing the people we really are. Thank you for loving us even when we do wrong. Amen. STEP 3 Explore More Choose from these activity options, depending on your available time frame, to help children explore the lesson further. Option 1: Find the Lost Sheep (15 min) Supplies: Green, blue, pink, and brown tissue paper cut into small squares (several per child); cotton balls (one per child); glue; construction paper Teacher Prep: Cut tissue paper into small squares. Prepare a sample to show the children as an example of the picture they will be making. SAY, Jesus is our Good Shepherd. We learned in the story that when one of his sheep gets lost, Jesus will look and search until he finds the lost sheep. CONTINUE, Today we will make a picture, and each of you can hide a lost sheep in the picture. GIVE each child a piece of construction paper and hand out other supplies. INSTRUCT the children to tear the green tissue paper and glue pieces onto the bottom of their construction paper to create grass. INSTRUCT the children to tear the brown tissue paper to create a tree trunk and glue it in one spot. Glue more green paper pieces at the top for the tree. INSTRUCT the children to tear the blue tissue paper and glue pieces at the top of the construction paper to create the sky. INSTRUCT the children to glue a few pieces of pink tissue paper throughout the grass to create flowers. INSTRUCT the children to glue their one cotton ball somewhere hidden within the grass. REMIND the children that Jesus will always look for his lost sheep. LESSON 7: Humanity PRESCHOOL 5

6 Option 2: Seek and Find (10 min) Supplies: Medium-to-large-size unclear container filled with dry rice; small tactile objects such as a rubber ball, small toy, animal figure, etc. (at least one object per child) Teacher Prep: Fill container with rice and hide objects in the rice. SAY, In the story of Jesus and the lost sheep, Jesus was willing to look everywhere for his lost sheep. CONTINUE, In this game, you will get to look for things too. ALLOW each child to have a turn digging through the rice for the hidden objects. SAY, Did it make you feel good when you found your hidden object? I bet Jesus felt good too when he found his lost sheep! Option 3: Sheep, Sheep, Lost Sheep (15 min) GATHER children in a circle and tell them the rules for Sheep, Sheep, Lost Sheep, which is similar to Duck, Duck, Goose. SAY, In Sheep, Sheep, Lost Sheep, one person who is the lost sheep will walk around the circle gently tapping the other people in the circle on the head saying sheep. Choose one person to look for the lost sheep, and when you get to that person, gently tap them on the head and say, Lost sheep! Then keep walking around the circle until you get back to your own empty spot and wait there. CONTINUE, In our game today, if you are tapped on the head when your classmate says, Lost sheep, you will stand up and follow (walking, not running) that child around the circle, as if you are trying to find your lost sheep. When you find the lost sheep (sitting back in his or her spot), gently guide the sheep to sit in your spot. Then you become the lost sheep and will get to choose the next person to find you! LEAD the children in several rounds of this game so that everyone has a turn. Option 4: Let s Color (10 min) Supplies: Crayons or markers, Let s Color! sheet (one per child) Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Let s Color! sheet (one per child) GIVE each child a coloring page. PROVIDE a selection of crayons and/or markers for the children to share. DISCUSS this week s Key Idea as the children color. LESSON 7: Humanity PRESCHOOL 6

The characters in this script can be played by two puppets or by a teacher, class helper, and/or student leader. Explain to the children how Cain was not being a good brother to Abel when he was jealous of him. Explain how brothers and sisters should be happy for each other, not jealous. Setting: At school Characters Jacob Tina jealous boy older friend Optional Props: Two puppets Tina: Why do you look so sad? Jacob: I m sad because my sister won a prize at school and I didn t! Tina: What did she win the prize for? Jacob: She won the prize for having the best drawing. Tina: Did you draw a picture for the contest too? Jacob: No. Tina: You should be proud of your sister. She did a good job. Jacob: But I want a prize too! Tina: I m sure there is a solution to this problem so that you could feel good about yourself and be happy for your sister. Jacob: What kind of solution? Tina: Why don t you ask your sister to help teach you how to draw better? Jacob: Yeah, I could do that. She is good at drawing. Tina: Exactly! Jacob: I guess that s why she won the prize. LESSON 7: Humanity PRESCHOOL 7

8 Tina: Feeling jealous never helps us. It makes us feel bad about ourselves and can hurt the people we love. Jacob: You re right. I don t want to feel bad. And my sister really did draw a great picture. I will tell her what a good job she did and ask her to teach me too. STEP 4 Going Home (5 min) Supplies: Family Page (one per child) GIVE each child a copy of this week s Family Page. SAY, Give this page to your family when they pick you up. It will remind you to tell your family what you have learned today about Cain and Abel and how God sees us. HAVE children practice telling you about how God can look past the bad things we do and love us anyway. REVIEW this week s Key Verse as well as today s story and Key Idea from the Believe Storybook Bible as you wait for the children to get picked up. MAKE sure each child remembers to take home any activity sheets or craft projects and the Family Page. LESSON 7: Humanity PRESCHOOL 8

Resource: Believe Storybook Bible, Chapter 7, Humanity How to Use This Page This week, your family can either read the story from the Believe Storybook Bible or read the Bible Basis verses from your Bible to help your child remember it. Use the Table Talk questions below to start a discussion around the dinner table, while driving in the car, or just about anywhere. The Living Faith activity is designed to remind your child of the Bible lesson through a drama or other engaging activity. The Extra Mile idea provides interactive ways for your child to connect with the story. Table Talk 1. What feeling did Cain have toward his brother? (He was jealous of Abel) 2. Did God forgive Cain for the bad thing he did? (Yes!) 3. Do you think God forgives you when you do things that are wrong? (Yes!) 4. What does God think of us when we do things that are wrong? (He is sad, but he still loves us and wants to help us) Living Faith Option 1 The story of Cain and Abel is a very important story for siblings to understand. Sibling rivalry can be a very real, very harmful problem for families. Helping children to recognize these feelings early on is important in order to avoid future problems and resentment. Using role-play activities can help LESSON 7: Humanity PRESCHOOL

10 children to discuss these feelings in a comfortable setting. Have your children act out the parts of Cain and Abel. Have the children use problems that they really have in their own relationships in the role-play. When children feel they are playing, they are often more comfortable with sharing their feelings. If your child does not have siblings, you can role-play with them about a situation in which they might be jealous of a friend. Option 2 Play a game of Marco Polo with your child, pretending to be Jesus finding his lost sheep. The person playing Jesus closes his or her eyes and says, Where are you? The person pretending to be the lost sheep says, Here I am! while moving about the room. The person pretending to be Jesus follows the sound of the sheep s voice to find the sheep and catch it. Take turns being Jesus and being the sheep. Extra Mile Help your child to memorize the Key Verse by playing Bible Freeze. Throughout the day, freeze your child and tell them they must remain frozen until they quote the verse to you. Encourage your child to freeze you during the day as well, and you must quote the verse. In no time, you will both learn the verse! Play Hide and Seek with your child. You can take turns hiding and pretending to be the lost sheep, and pretending to be Jesus, searching for his lost sheep. When Jesus finds his lost sheep, make a big deal about it, and celebrate with a cheer and a little dance. When your child does something wrong and gets a time-out or other punishment, take a moment to reinforce the concept of forgiveness. Although your child will receive punishment for doing something wrong, you still love them and forgive them, just like Jesus is sad when they do things wrong, but he still loves and forgives them too.
