1 Section 1-15 This section: Modem Driver Describes what a Modem Driver does. Describes how to install, configure and run a Modem Driver. Describes how to view its message monitor screen. Note: there must be one Modem Driver program installed and running for every dial-up modem connected to the computers on your local area network. There are two types of Modem Driver supplied with the access control software. The standard Modem Driver (TAPI Driver) works perfectly well in almost all installations and has a button on LaunchPad s Communications page. In exceptional circumstances, the alternative Modem Driver should be used Siemens technical support will advise you. This Modem Driver is called ModemDrv.exe and is stored in the c:\program Files\Siemens\Granta\sysmgrsql\progs folder. Each dial-up modem connected to any computer on your local area network must have its own Modem Driver installed, configured and running. Each Modem Driver has a Modem Profile Number. If you have more than one Modem Driver on the same computer, you must allocate a different profile number to each of them. 15-1

2 Installing and configuring a Modem Driver You need to install a Modem Driver for each dial-up modem connected to any computer on your local area network. The Modem Driver must be installed on the computer to which the dial-up modem is connected. If you have more than one dial-up modem connected to the same computer, you need to install more than one Modem Driver on that computer. If you install a modem driver on another computer, you need to install and run the Granta Pipes program on that computer. To install and configure a Modem Driver, take the following steps: 1. Put the DVD-ROM in the computer s drive and install Granta Pipes and a Modem Driver using the Custom option in the install routine. Doing this also automatically installs LaunchPad. 2. Make sure that the modem is connected to the computer and powered up, and that it has been installed correctly in Windows. 3. Run LaunchPad, then run the Modem Driver from LaunchPad by clicking on the button. If this computer is not running System Manager then you also need to run Granta Pipes by clicking on the button. 4. Click on the Modem Driver icon in the System Tray to display the Modem Driver window. 5. Click on the Configure tab, then click on the Edit button. 6. If you have only one modem connected to this computer, the Modem Name field should already be filled in with the correct type of modem as configured in Windows. If you have more than one modem connected to this computer then click on the Modem Name field and choose the modem you want this Modem Driver to use. 7. Set the Modem Profile to be different from all your existing Modem Drivers on this computer. For example, if you already have one dial-up modem on this computer which communicates using a Modem Driver with Modem Profile 0, you must set the new Modem Driver to a different number, for example: Modem Profile The Modem Driver Polling List at the bottom of the window shows all the remote sites which are configured in the Hardware Systems program. You can choose which remote sites you want this modem to service. For example, you could use this modem to contact all of your remote sites. Or, if you have an important remote site, you may want to give that site priority and allocate it a modem all of its own. Enable the check boxes of the remote sites which you want this modem to service. If you want it to be able to contact all your remote sites then click on the Select All button. 9. If you want this modem to be used only for dialling in by remote sites when an alarm occurs, enable the Alarm Only Modem check box. If you do this, this modem cannot be used by the host to dial out to remote sites. It is only used for dialling in by any of the remote sites which are enabled in the Modem Driver Polling List when an alarm occurs. 15-2

3 10. If you want a message screen to be displayed when this modem connects to a remote site, showing the protocol messages for the dialup process, enable the Call Status Display check box. This is provided mainly for debugging purposes so you can see what is happening when the modem tries to dial out to a remote site. 11. If you click on the Properties button, you will see the modem configuration as set up in Windows. You shouldn t need to change any of these settings if the modem was installed correctly. 12. Click on the Save button on the Configure page of the Modem Driver. Running a Modem Driver You need to run the Modem Driver on the computer to which the dial-up modem is connected. This may or may not be the computer which has the SQL Server and the access control programs installed on it. When you install a Modem Driver on a different computer, a copy of LaunchPad is automatically installed on that computer too - so you can run the Modem Driver from LaunchPad. From LaunchPad If this computer is not running System Manager then you need to run Granta Pipes by clicking on the button. Click on the button for the Modem Driver which you want to run (you may have more than one Modem Driver - each one is distinguished by its profile number which is displayed in the Modem Driver button: (this one is profile number 0). When you run a Modem Driver its icon appears in the system tray at the bottom right of the Windows screen. If you ever want to stop the Modem Driver, you close it down by right-clicking on this icon and choosing the Close Modem Driver command from the popup menu. 15-3

4 Using the Modem Driver to monitor messages passing between the host and the Controllers at a remote site The Modem Driver provides a message monitor which shows the raw ASCII messages passing between the host and the controllers on the remote site to which this Modem Driver is currently connected (if any). This monitor is provided for debugging purposes. The System Manager and Comms Driver also provide monitors on which you can see messages passing between the host and the controllers. 1. Display the Modem Driver window (if it is not already displayed, click on the icon in the system tray at the bottom right of the Windows screen. 2. Click on the Monitor tab. 3. Make sure that the Enable Display check box is selected. 4. Choose a horizontal split or a vertical split for the In and Out messages by clicking on the Horizontal Split check box. 5. Select the Enable Log File check box if you want all the messages displayed on the monitor stored in a text file on the computer. The file is called ModemLog<profile number>.txt and is stored by default in the c:\sysmgrsql\progs folder. For example, if this is Modem Driver with profile number 0, the log file is called: ModemLog0.txt The text file shows the time at which each message was passed and the message itself. Remember to disable this feature after debugging or the file will quickly become very large. Using the alternative Modem Driver As explained earlier, there is another Modem Driver supplied with the access control software which you may need to use in exceptional circumstances ask Bewator Technical support for advice. It performs the same functions as the TAPI Driver described above, but does so using a different protocol. 15-4

5 Adding ModemDrv.exe to LaunchPad 1. Open the c:\sysmgrsql\progs folder. 2. Run LaunchPad and click on the Communications tab. 3. Using the mouse, drag the file called ModemDrv.exe onto LaunchPad s Communications page. The button for the alternative Modem Driver is now displayed. You do not need to delete the existing Modem Driver button. Running the alternative Modem Driver If this computer is not running System Manager then you need to run Granta Pipes by clicking on the button. You can run ModemDrv.exe either by clicking on its button in LaunchPad, or by double-clicking on ModemDrv.exe in the c:\sysmgrsql\progs folder. Configuring the alternative Modem Driver Configuration is almost the same as for the TAPI Driver the only difference is that the Modem Profile number is associated with the Com Port number rather than the modem name. 1. Click on the Configure tab, then click on the Edit button. 2. Set the Modem Profile to be different from all your existing Modem Drivers on this computer. For example, if you already have one dial-up modem on this computer which communicates using a Modem Driver with Modem Profile 0, you must set the new Modem Driver to a different number, for example: Modem Profile Set the Com Port number to which the modem is connected. 4. Click on the Modem Name field and choose the type of modem which is connected to the Com Port. (Only certain types of modem are supported if you want to use a different type of modem then you need to add its details to the AWMODEM.ini file which is stored in the c:\sysmgrsql\progs folder. To do this, you click on the Properties button and edit the settings note that you must be technically competent to do this.) 5. The Modem Driver Polling List at the bottom of the window shows all the remote sites which are configured in the Hardware Systems program.
