1 Troubleshooting Cellular Modems: Siemens Controllers The following steps are to troubleshoot communication issues between a Sierra Wireless Cellular modem and a Siemens traffic signal controller. Please note the different connection types and use the one that applies to the situation you are troubleshooting. As always, if there are any further issues that are not addressed, please contact the Office of Traffic Operations at (614) Step 1: Check the modem LEDs If no lights are on, then you have a power problem. Make sure the modem is plugged in and if using a GFI outlet, that it hasn t tripped. If the network and signal LEDs are blinking, there is a cellular signal problem. Cycle the power on the modem and wait 5 minutes. If the LEDs still are not solid, then contact the office of traffic operations for further instructions. (614) If just the power LED is lit and all others are dark, the modem is bad. Send it to the office of traffic operations for repairs. For Modems using an Ethernet Connection Step 2: Check the Ethernet port on the modem and on the controller When the Ethernet cable is plugged into both the controller and the modem, there should be two LEDs lit on the modems Ethernet port. One solid green and the other flashing orange. (As shown below) If either of the LEDs are not lit, than switch out the Ethernet cable. If the problem persists, than you have a bad Ethernet port either on the controller or on the modem.

2 When the Ethernet cable is plugged into both the controller and the modem, the status light should be lit on the controller. (As shown below) If the LED is not lit, than replace the Ethernet cable. If the problem persists, than you have a bad Ethernet port either on the controller or on the modem. (For 2070 Controller Only) Step 3: Check the controller settings The settings in the controller need to be exactly as follows. First check the IP addressing menu. Key in 2, 8, 4 from the main menu to reach it. The second menu is the Network Config menu. Key in 2, 8, 5 from the main menu to reach it.

3 The third menu is the Address menu. Key in 8, 1, 1 from the main menu to reach it. Step 4: Contact the Office of Traffic Operations at (614) if problem is not corrected For Modems using a Serial Connection Step 2: Check Serial port on the controller If you are using a 2070 controller, make sure that the TX and RX lights are blinking on the comm module in the back of the controller. If these are not lighting up, try flipping the serial cable around.

4 If you are using a M50 or 2070 you can also check the communications status. This can be found by keying in 1 5 from the main menu. There should be DATA ACK and DATA VALID messages alternating in the Transmitting and Receiving window as shown below. If these are not showing up than try flipping the cable around. If the problem persists advance to next step. Step 3: Check Serial Settings in the controller Make sure the proper baud rate is being used. The baud rate differs based on district preference. For Example, District 2 uses and District 6 uses To change the baud rate, key in from the main menu and enter the desired baud rate. For 2070s, make sure the controller is using the correct serial port. If there is a 1 next to PORT 2 IO, then the controller is using the C50S port on the front. If there is a 0 next to PORT 2 IO, then the controller is using the C22S port on the back. Be sure that the serial cable is plugged into the port the controller is using.

5 Once the baud rate menu is configured, key in from the main menu and make sure that the address is set to 1. Step 4: Contact the Office of Traffic Operations at (614) if problem is not corrected
