1 CODE: J-JJK Active & Healthy Living Administrative Regulations Cross Reference: Supervision of Students Policy JLIA Volunteers Policy (IJOC) Athletics Policy (JJI) Nutrition Policy (EF) Co-curricular Policy (JJ) Use of Instructional Time (ID) 1.0 General 1.1 This policy applies to all school activities and initiatives used to promote healthy and active lifestyle for students, staff and the school community in general, either on school property or off site. 1.2 Eastern School District will establish a School Health and Active Living Advisory Committee to advise the District and schools on all matters pertaining to healthy and active living initiatives. 2.0 Student Access to Health Promoting Physical Activity 2.1 All schools in Eastern School District will develop practices to address the physical activity needs of students. Schools should consider school wide and classroom based activities that instill positive attitudes in students toward the value of physical activity for health and recreation. This, in concert with healthy nutritional practices, should also be encouraged beyond the school walls. 2.2 Schools, in consultation with their Senior Education Officer, shall work towards providing scheduled recess and lunch breaks within the school day at appropriate times to allow students sufficient time to eat a nutritious snack/lunch and provide an opportunity for physical activity. 2.3 K-6 schools, subject to weather conditions and student safety as determined by the administration, are encouraged to have children go outside during unstructured playtime. 2.4 Schools shall make every effort to ensure school grounds are developed and maintained to a level that supports safe and appropriate outside activity. 2.5 Schools should make every attempt to provide all students the opportunity to take part in health promoting physical activity before and after school. 2.6 Schools should promote and provide opportunities for active transport to and from school. An example is the provision of bicycle racks for students to secure their bicycles.
