1 December 11, 2015 Dear, March 21 st marks the annual commemoration of the UN proclamation of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The City of Markham supports this significant day with the annual Many Faces of Markham event, a celebration of the community s ethno-cultural inclusiveness, co-sponsored by the City of Markham and the Markham Race Relations Committee. Additionally, 2015 is notable nation-wide as a year of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-indigenous people. The first volume of the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission asks all levels of government federal, provincial, and municipal along with individual citizens, to engage in ways to rebuild the relationship between the first peoples of Canada and non-indigenous people. With this focus in mind, the theme for this year s Many Faces of Markham event is Aboriginal Celebrations: Voices from the Past, Present, and Future. Many voices represent the various Aboriginal communities in Canada, and these communities are integral to the diversity of the nation. Such voices include successful leaders in athletics, law, science, politics, academia, and the arts. Our Master of Ceremonies for the event will be one such leader, actor Sid Bobb (Nipissing First Nation), former co-host of Kids CBC and a familiar face to many school-age children. Many Faces of Markham begins as an art, writing, and video competition, prior to the event, for students from schools in Markham to enter. Winners in each category are then recognized during the Many Faces of Markham celebration, an afternoon that features live performances and an awards ceremony: Location: Flato Markham Theatre, 171 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, ON L3R 8G5 Date: Sunday, March 20, 2016 Time: 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Enclosed are several copies of the flyer with details about the competition to place in your school to encourage student participation. You are welcome to make additional copies as needed. The deadline for competition submissions is February 5, Please advise your teachers of this contest so that they can involve their students. 2 Competition Details Who can enter the competition? The competition is open to all Markham students from kindergarten to grade 8. Why should I participate? Share your concern for reconciliation with Canada s Indigenous people Receive special recognition at the Many Faces of Markham event held at the Flato Markham Theatre on March 20, 2016 Be eligible to win a prize!!! How do I enter? Competition winners will be informed in February How and when will the winning students be recognized? Winning entries will be displayed at Flato Markham Theatre. All winners will be invited on stage as a group to receive a certificate in recognition of their achievement on the afternoon of Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 2 pm. 3 Tips for teachers: Are you looking for ideas to incorporate Indigenous content into your curriculum planning this term? The 2016 Many Faces of Markham art, writing, and video competition provides you with the opportunity to plan for and implement content related to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, cultures, and perspectives. For more ideas on resources specific to the age of the students you teach, see Aboriginal Perspectives: A Guide to the Teachers Toolkit, produced by the Ministry of Education of the Province of Ontario. There are also many good online resources that offer suggestions for discussing Canada s colonial history, and the impact this has had on Indigenous peoples, in age appropriate ways. In terms of general curricular requirements, the Many Faces of Markham competition allows you to work with your students on Media Literacy expectations 2.2 (Conventions and Techniques), 3.1 (Purpose and Audience), 3.4 (Producing Media Texts), and 4.1 (Metacognition). In addition, the competition naturally ties into many Writing expectations, as well as some for Reading (Overall Expectation #1). The Many Faces of Markham competition provides your students with the chance to voice their opinions and ideas, to generate discussion and promote greater understanding, while having the opportunity to be recognized for their work.
