1 MEGA Motion- Activity ideas: Nursery Walking Activities Regular walking initiative- Walk once a Week- WoW (from Living Streets). Join in with in National Walk to School Week (May) or organise your own event. Join in with international Walk to School Month or organise your own event. Curriculum linked walks/ Educational walks: Charity walks/ walking challenges. Welly walk and welly decorating. Teddy bears picnic walk/ We're going on a bear hunt walk/ hungry caterpillar walk and picnic/ walks links to fairytales. Walking to places in the local community e.g. churches, shops, parks. Nature walk to local park/ nature reserve. Walk to look at features in the local environment or spotting traffic signs. Any activities on how to cross roads/ stay safe out and about/ activities around getting on buses or trains. PE activity- walk like a.dinosaur/ different kinds of animals etc. Art activities using footprints/ bike tyre prints. Activities on the way to nursery: Scavenger hunt walk/ on the way to nursery, themed walk to nursery event. Set up a walk together scheme to help parents get together with other parents to help each other out with the school run (see Living Streets website for info). walk to nursery breakfast Leavers walk: Children celebrate the end of nursery before going to primary school with a leavers walk/ walk and picnic Page 1 of 6

2 Cycling/scooting activities Any basic cycling/ tricycle/scooting work e.g. use of scooters or trikes/ bikes at nursery. Cycling/ scooting challenge- how many times children can ride around playground etc. Hold an event to celebrate National Bike Week (June). Bike/ trike activities such as riding around the playground, making bike biscuits/ tyre track print pictures. Special breakfast items for children coming on bikes or having a go on bikes during the day. As a regular event or one-off. Cycling training for parents/ staff- contact Local Motion Cycling Officer to arrange. (Or could be run by any bike- knowledgeable parent volunteers) Bike security marking event. One-off or regular cycle to or from nursery (nursery staff or parents) Decorate a bike/scooter session/ or children bring in their bike already decorated and hold a parade in the grounds. - e.g. wise owls- make an owl out of high visi materials/ card that hangs on handle-bars. Basic level session learn to ride session to get children off their stabilisers/ get them started with bikes/ balance bike training- contact Local Motion Cycling Officer. Leavers ride/ scoot: End of the year before children go to primary school- take bikes and parents to local park to have a ride around the park on safe off road paths with a picnic. Page 2 of 6

3 Road safety activities Children s traffic club. This is an early years road safety resource club that nurseries, schools and parents can sign up to. Curriculum linked activities: Use of Road Safety GB resources (e.g. Teddy takes a tumble). Be bright be seen activities- crafts from high vis material, experimenting with shining torches onto high vis, dress bright day etc. Citizenship work e.g. where police/ fire etc visitors come into nursery to work with the children linked to road safety. Any activities with children on safely crossing roads or staying safe out and about when walking. E.g. walks teaching children to use crossing patrols or wait for the green man. Traffic monitoring could be used as a curriculum exercise- e.g. counting cars/ bikes etc passing nursery, spotting different colours of vehicles, talking about which types of transport move faster or slower. Scooter training. Teaching children basic skills such as balancing, stopping, starting, staying with parents. Can be arranged through Local Motion Cycling Officer. In-car safety advice given to parents. Information leaflets could be given out to parents- see Arrange for visitors to nursery open day from relevant road safety organisations. Page 3 of 6

4 Smarter driving activities Promote car sharing:this can be formal or informal schemes. Posters in staff room, creating a journey sharing group for staff or parents (e.g. Car free day: One off day where staff and parents are encouraged to leave the car at home or park further away. Could link with a celebration to make a special event or a whole day about how to stay safe or healthy lifestyles- reducing accidents/ air pollution/ how much exercise children and parents need. Could link with Healthy Darlington or Police/ traffic wardens. Could contact a local business such as a supermarket to see if parents could park somewhere else rather than right outside nursery. Provide map to parents showing a 5 minute walking zone as part of welcome information/ prospectus. (See Living Streets website for info on setting this up) Nursery could get involved in a campaign for lower speed limits. Promotion of Highway code in general or promoting specific items that may be relevant to any particular road safety issues experienced around the nursery e.g. parking on zig zags or close to junctions. Could partner with police or traffic wardens for some monitoring outside the nursery. Parents sign up to a parent parking promise as part of home-school agreements. Set parking system and policy in place e.g. one way system through car park. Giving out car stickers / competition to design a park & stride car sticker. Zone can be set up around school to reduce cars within a set radius. This can be informal, semiformal or formal (See Living Streets website for info on setting up walking zones). Public transport activities Using public transport for school trips e.g a short trip on a local bus in the local area. Experts to talk about personal safety: Visitors from Local Authority transport or road safety sections/ Police/ fire service/ bus or train companies. Could be to talk to parents or activities with the children. Do you have any areas for play related to public transport? (e.g. dressing up, play money or bus/ train tickets) Use of books or music related to public transport- the wheels on the bus etc. Page 4 of 6

5 Promotional activities Newsletters: include sustainable travel activities in parent newsletters. Include sustainable travel information/ activities on Nursery noticeboards/ have a MEGA Motion noticeboard set up. Enter National, local or nursery competitions related to sustainable travel. Parent s evening: A stand or information at a parents open day to promote travel work, engage with parents, explain any relevant schemes in place, encourage them to join in and support activities. Pass on activities to nursery co-ordinator for including on nursery website. Invite the mayor/ a councillor/ MP/ another important person from the local community to any event that is linked to sustainable travel e.g. sponsored walk/ scoot/ trike event. Have any articles/ photos appeared in the local media relating to the travel activities of the nursery? Invite parents in for informal coffee morning to let parents know how they could get involved e.g. in the working group/ helping with activities or just to let them know the kind of activities the nursery have been taking part in and to give out any relevant info. Sharing ideas: Coming along to/ present at the the Local Motion Action Day/ STAR's award ceremony. Work on joint ideas with other schools/ nurseries such as walking or cycling relay from one school to another, hosting a lunch/activity session for another school/ who have walked/ cycled over. Make cycling/ public transport maps available in reception and staff room. (Contact Local Motion team if you would like some to distribute) Display relevant posters/ banners in the nursery. Use twitter/ facebook feeds if relevant to promote any sustainable travel activities to parents. Activities with the children using video/ art etc to promote sustainable travel/ walking/ cycling etc to parents. Sponsored walk/ scoot/ trike/ balance bike around the nursery grounds or local park. 6 Curriculum activities Teach health benefits of safe/ active travel: This could link to healthy schools activities- simple activities about walking etc as part of learning about how to be healthy. Teach environmental benefits of active travel: Simple activities (could be linked to Eco-schools/ sustainable schools) teaching children about caring for/ learning about the world. Theatre in education: Any productions or visiting storytellers/ plays etc that are related to sustainable travel. Other curriculum activities: Activity on what clothes we should wear for riding bikes/ going for walk. How to keep safe- high vis/ helmets/ staying with adults. High vis clothing/ helmets available in dressing up area. Partnership activities Any work with police/pcso's on traffic safety related to the nursery. Any joint work with councillors/ parish council/ mayor etc to address issues such as speeding/ traffic problems etc outside the nursery. Work with local residents: Invite local residents to join in with traffic monitoring activities outside of the nursery. Invite local residents to join the nursery sustainable travel working group to work on projects as part of the wider nursery community. Work with charities/ Non-governmental organisations Supporting events such as a Brake Beep Beep day or Giant walking bus, Sustrans Big Pedal or Living Street activities. Take part in local charity walks such as Macmillan Toddle. Healthy lifestyle activities through Darlington Sports Development/ Move More Team. Work with any community groups/ Sure-start centres in relation to travel. Work with schools that the children may go on to next could include transition activities. Page 6 of 6
