1 Welcome Week 2016 Student Schedule Friday, August 19 th Residence Hall Move-in (Beginning at 8:00 AM Bayliss, Henninger, and Tanner Halls) Depending on the time of your arrival, you can expect to wait for a while. Please be patient as the Move-in Staff coordinates this process. They will have you and your family members moved into your new residence hall room as soon as possible! Commuter/Transfer Student Programming (4:00 PM Capitol Room, University Union If you are a commuter or transfer student, join the Orientation Team for useful information about policies, activities, and resources available to you at Western Illinois University. Convocation (5:30 PM Western Hall) WIU faculty, staff, and students will officially welcome new undergraduate students and their families to Western Illinois University. All incoming first-year and transfer students should plan to attend this ceremony, which is designed to promote Western s values: academic excellence, educational opportunity, personal growth, and social responsibility. Convocation is also a time to share in the rich traditions and history of the University. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 P.M. with a formal procession of faculty and administrators dressed in full academic regalia. President s Picnic (6:15 PM On the Campus Mall near the Spencer Student Recreation Center) Convocation participants are invited to attend the President s Picnic immediately following New Student Convocation. Floor Connection (8:00 PM On Your Residence Hall Floor) Meet with people on your floor for the first time, and get to know your Resident Assistant (RA) and your neighbors before walking over to Rocky After Dark: First Night Fun festivities. Rocky After Dark: First Night Fun (8:30 PM Hanson Football Field) Join the free fun with food, caricature artists, henna tattoo artists, zorb ball experience, inflatables, obstacle course, zip lining, interactive games and more!
2 Saturday, August 20 th Leatherneck Legacy (9:00 AM Western Hall) Welcome to Western Illinois University! You are officially a Fighting Leatherneck! Join us for tons of fun to kick off the school year, learn about WIU traditions, and begin your Leatherneck Legacy at Western Illinois University. Class of 2020 Photo Shoot (10:30 AM Hanson Football Field; Rain Location: Campus Recreation) Join your fellow classmates to be a part of the Class of 2020 photo. Students will receive a free shirt! Academic Expectations (11:30 AM Various Locations) Explore your academic opportunities, meet with faculty and other students within your major, and learn about what you will need to do in order to fulfill the requirements for your major in your time at Western Illinois University. Lunch (Beginning at 11:30 AM On your own in Residence Hall Dining Centers; NEED WIU ID CARD) Placement Testing (2:00 PM) You will only need to participate in placement testing if you were unable to do so during your time at SOAR, or if you are otherwise notified of the necessity to take a placement test in either math or foreign language. Please refer to the appropriate placement testing documentation for exact time and location. Where are my Classes? (3:00 PM & 4:00 PM Leaving from Various Locations) So, being new to campus can be kind of difficult, especially if you re trying to figure out where all your classes will be held! This will be your opportunity to explore campus, and to discover the academic buildings and even the exact rooms where you will have your specific classes. Be sure to bring your class schedule with you! Block Party Massive Minute to Win It! (5:00-7:00 PM Outside Bayliss, Henninger, & Tanner Halls) Join us for an outdoor block party in the area of your new home. Dinner will be served outside, along with tons of games, music, and lots of people! Come check it out and make some new friends while enjoying some food, fun, and chances to win great prizes!
3 Saturday, August 20 th Continued Men s Soccer vs Quincy University (5:00 PM John MacKenzie Alumni Field) Dinner (5:30 PM Outside Bayliss, Henninger, & Tanner Halls; NEED WIU ID CARD) Comedy Hypnosis and Magic with David Hall (8:00 PM Grand Ballroom, University Union) Watch as David Hall astounds the audience while hypnotizing audience volunteers. So much fun, and so many surprises! Free admission. Sunday, August 21 st ***Take time to settle into your room Lunch (11:30 AM Corbin/Olson and Thompson Halls; NEED WIU ID CARD) Multicultural Student Orientation: Reception (2:00 PM Multicultural Center) Floor Dinner (4:30 PM 6:30 PM Bayliss, Henninger, & Tanner Halls) Get to know your floor mates and your Resident Assistant (RA) over a catered dinner! Floor Meetings (7:00 PM Bayliss, Henninger, and Tanner Halls) Here is another opportunity to get to know your floor mates and your Resident Assistant (RA), as well as find out useful information about living in your residence hall. Ask questions and provide suggestions for programs or fun activities to happen throughout the year. Look for signs on your floor to tell you exact time and location. Monday, August 22 nd First Day of Classes! (Starting at 8:00 AM sharp!) Don t forget to call your mom and other family members!
4 Monday, August 22 nd Continued Welcome Tents (7:30 AM 12:00 PM North and South of the University Union) Hall Government Social (7:00 PM 8:00 PM In your complex s common area) Enjoy some social time with leaders in your hall and learn about Hall Government! With many opportunities to get involved, Hall Government will be the place to be on Monday evenings! Panhellenic Council (PHC) Recruitment Registration Fee Increase, online The registration fee to participate in the PHC Formal Recruitment Process increases from $35 to $40. Register online at wiu.edu/greeklife. Tuesday, August 23 rd Welcome Tents (7:30 AM 12:00 PM North and South of the University Union) Centennial Honors College Welcome Back Party (4:30 PM 6:30 PM Garden Lounge, Malpass Library) The Centennial Honors College will host a reception to welcome new freshman and transfer Honors students and to welcome back continuing honors students, honors faculty and honors staff. Students who may be eligible for the Honors College are also welcome. Kickball Under the Lights FYE Event (8:00 PM Hanson Field) We will feature kickball, football skills challenge, Baggo games, chair basketball, and dodgeball; hosted by the Rec. Center. This is the first of your required six week FYE events, and attendance will be taken by your RA at the hall before you head over to the football field. Wednesday, August 24 th Veterans and Service Members Meet & Greet (4:30 PM Veterans Resource Center Backyard 333 N. Ward Street) New and returning veterans and service members are invited to an informal gathering to welcome our new students and visit with returning students. Refreshments will be available. Dine with the IFC (5:00 PM 7:00 PM Thompson Dining Center) For men interested in joining an Interfraternity Council (IFC) Fraternity. Representatives from each of the eleven (11) recognized organizations and IFC Executive Board Members will be available to get to know and learn more about joining an IFC organization.
5 Thursday, August 25 th Fraternity/Sorority Information Session (5:00 PM 7:00 PM Tanner Circle Lounge) For anyone interested in joining a fraternity or sorority. Learn more about the processes of joining one of the 26 fraternal organizations from the Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council (PHC), or United Greek Council (UGC). Council representatives will provide a brief overview of the process and will be available for individual questions. Friday, August 26 th Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer/Questioning, Asexual/Ally (LGBTQA) New Student Orientation (4:30-7:00 PM Capitol Rooms, University Union) The LGBTQA Resource Center welcomes all LGBTQA new students to this interactive, educational program and to meet other students, faculty, and staff. The LGBTQA Lounge will also be available to tour. Women s Volleyball vs Akron (10:30 AM Western Hall) Women s Volleyball vs Milwaukee (5:30 PM Western Hall) Saturday, August 27 th Mud Volleyball (8:00 AM 8:00 PM The Volleyball Courts near North Quad) Teams of at least six students compete in this one-day tournament. Food, music, and entertainment will be available. Pick up registration packets from any hall s information desk or from the Student Recreation Center. A $25 entry fee will be collected from each team. Week of August 28 th - September 3 rd Monday, August 29 th Speed Mingle Monday (7:00 PM 8:00 PM In your complex s common area) Continue the excitement with Hall Government with Speed Mingle Monday! Enjoy some free snacks and make a ton of connections to others in your hall!
6 Monday, August 29 th Continued Beginning of IFC Recruiting (August 29 th - September 9 th ) Look for advertisements of recruitment events from the IFC and it s member chapters. Tuesday, August 30 th Intramural 16 Softball Tournament (Campus Recreation) Entries open on August 22, and close on August 28. Register online at wiu.edu/intramurals Intramural 4v4 Sand Volleyball (Campus Recreation) Entries open on August 22, and close on August 28. Register online at wiu.edu/intramurals Wednesday, August 31 st Activities and Volunteer Fair (3:00 PM 5:00 PM Grand Ballroom and Brattain Lounge, University Union) Get involved in campus activities and student organizations along with meeting representatives from various volunteer and service agencies in Macomb. More than 150 groups will be represented in addition to 30 Macomb area businesses. Come and find your "fit" at WIU. Local Business Fair (3:00 PM 5:00 PM Grand Ballroom Gallery, University Union) Want to learn more about what Macomb has to offer? At the Local Business Fair Macomb businesses will introduce you to their services and products. Stop by for free giveaways. IHCu Wednesday (7:00 PM 8:00 PM Capitol Rooms, University Union) Inter-Hall Council welcomes you to kick off the year and learn how to get involved! 7 Friday, September 2 nd Continued "The Big Picture" and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer/Questioning, Asexual/Ally (LGBTQA) Picnic (4:30-7:00 PM Union Plaza) The LGBTQA Resource Center at Western Illinois University will sponsor the 12th annual "The Big Picture." All members of the Western and Macomb communities are invited to participate as a show of support. Following the picture, join the LGBTQA Resource Center, members of Unity, and the University Committee on Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression (UCOSOGIE) for food, fun and opportunities to interact. All are welcome. Men s & Women s Cross Country Meet (5:00 PM Spring Lake) Tie Dye Friday (7:00PM 8:00 PM In your complex s common area) Ready to get colorful? Come enjoy some free tie-dying with your Hall Government! The first participants will get free items to tie-dye! Come ready to have some fun or bring something of your own to transform with tie-dye. Monday, September 5 th Panhellenic Council (PHC) Recruitment Registration Fee Increase, online The registration fee to participate in the PHC Formal Recruitment Process increases from $40 to $45. Tuesday, September 6 th Women s Volleyball vs Eastern Illinois (7:00 PM John MacKenzie Alumni Western Hall Club Wetzel FYE Event (8:00 PM Tanner Hall Circle) Join us for this annual event which brings together education on alcohol use, dancing, food, and fun all in one place! Residents will have the chance to win prizes, get to know new people and dance the night away! This is part of the FYE event program and attendance will be taken at the event.
8 Wednesday, September 7 th CUPP (Community-University Partnership Program) Welcome Back Block Party (5:00 PM 7:00 PM Sherman Hall Front Lawn; Rain Location Heritage Room) All University students and community residents are invited to this FREE family-friendly event featuring music, free food, and activities. Local businesses will have displays, giveaways, and a free raffle drawing for great prizes! Fraternity/Sorority Fair (5:00 PM 7:00 PM Grand Ballroom, University Union) Similar to the Activities Fair, the Fraternity/Sorority Fair will be an introduction to all of the fraternal organizations on campus. Each fraternity and sorority will have representatives available to learn more about their organizations. Each council will also be available for potential members to register for their perspective recruitment. Friday, September 9 th Women s Soccer vs North Dakota (4:00 PM John MacKenzie Alumni Field) Saturday, September 10 th Men s Soccer vs Bowling Green (1:00 PM John MacKenzie Alumni Field) HOME OPENER Football vs Northern Arizona (Family Day & Agriculture Day) Freshmen Runout (3:00 PM Hanson Field) ALL WIU Freshmen meet in the north end zone 20 minutes prior to kick-off to lead the team on the field. Monday, September 12 th Hall Government Elections (7:00 PM 8:00 PM In your complex s common area) Hall Government Nominations and Elections are happening! You can lead your hall and peers while creating some fantastic experiences! Come check it out and get involved!
9 Tuesday, September 13 th Sorority Fair (6:00 PM 8:00 PM Brattain Lounge, University Union) One more opportunity to meet with members of our PHC and UGC members to learn more about the opportunities for membership. Wednesday, September 14 th Panhellenic Council (PHC) Recruitment Registration Closes, online Women who are interested in participating in the PHC Formal Recruitment Process must be registered by 11:59pm to be considered for eligibility. Thursday, September 15 th Panhellenic Council (PHC) Recruitment Weekend (September 15 th 18 th ) Beginning with Potential New Member (PNM) Orientation through Bid Day, the recruitment process is an exciting time for both PNMs and Chapter Members. Details for the week will be outlined for PNMs in the recruitment materials and during PNM Orientation. Career Carnival (1:30 PM 3:30 PM Outside of Tanner Hall) This event sponsored by the Career Development Center features booths with fun career orientated activities! Come out and play quick games more about careers related to your major or majors you may be considering.
