2 I have had a passion for photographing birds for many years. This collection of ebooks presents a selection of my images showing a reasonable number of Australian bird species. Where the male and female birds are significantly different, I have tried to include images of both sexes and occasionally of young birds (any not adult). My collection still only comprises about half of the Australian species, so much time still remains to be spent observing and photographing these beautiful creatures. All images were captured digitally, only minimal image manipulation has been performed. The images have been presented in Christidis & Boles 2008 order across the set of books. But why undertake such a photographic challenge? A good bird image is extremely difficult to capture. In reality, bird photography is similar to portrait photography and has all the associated challenges. Additionaly, unlike their human counterparts, birds are small, wary of humans and do not understand, let alone obey, posing instructions. Most importantly, they have the ability and tendency to just fly away at the critical moment! Reasons for accepting the challenge of bird photography were eloquently proposed by Raoul Slater as: Birds are beautiful and wild creatures. In photographing them, two instincts are satisfied the civilised appreciation of beauty and the primitive desire for the chase. To photograph is to hunt. There is the exhilaration of the chase but, at its end, instead of a head on the wall there is a framed print. I trust that you enjoy viewing the images as much as I did in capturing them, John Holford website: John Holford. The author retains sole copyright to this book and all images contained within it. This book, in its entirety and without modification, may be freely distributed, but can not be sold.
