2 You Are Invited! WELCOME: Welcome Administrators, Teachers, Parents and Students The Oneida County Land & Water Conservation Department (LWCD) and the Lumberjack Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D) invite you to participate in the 4 th Annual Northwoods Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Poster and Video Contest. Area students in 4 th through 8 th grades are eligible to enter. The primary goal of this contest is to educate students about aquatic invasive species (AIS). WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CONTEST? Rusty, the Invasive Crayfish, asks: THIS IS WHY! IT S A FACT: Over $15,000 is spent each summer for scuba divers to hand pull Eurasian water-milfoil in Squash Lake! IT S A FACT: Lake Superior is home to 97 non-native species!* IT S A FACT: Yellow Floating Heart (a prohibited species) was found for the first time in a natural lake in Wisconsin during the summer of It is suspected that the invasive colony originated from a private pond and was released into Gordon Lake in Forest County. IT S A FACT: Immature Zebra Mussels cannot be seen by the naked eye and adult Zebra Mussels can filter one quart of water each day robbing native species of vital nutrients. We hope that students participating in this contest will gain a better understanding of how AIS can affect each individual. More importantly, that each of us can help stop the spread of invasive species and protect our lakes and rivers! We hope you will join us in the fight against the spread of AIS. Good luck and have fun! * 2

3 New in 2015! New in 2015 Video Contest NEW! This year, we have added a new video division to our contest. A student, or group of students, can write, produce, direct and star in a 30-second Public Service Announcement (PSA) that will be judged during the 2015 Poster & Video Contest. NOTE: A PSA is a short message or commercial designed to educate the public about a specific topic. It does not have to include people, but can consist of still images with a voice-over message. See examples at: Choose Sample PSAs under the 2015 AIS Poster/Video Contest section. So, get your friends together and plan your message. Subject matter must meet judging criteria and be no longer than 30 seconds. For more information, see page 7 in this brochure. 3
