1 (Instructions for Midget start on Page 4) 1. Flip up the windshield wiper arms so that they do not touch the windshield. This will avoid scratches on the windshield. (Alternately, the arms can be temporarily removed from their mounting stalks. Put a short straight piece of tape on the end of one stalk so that its movement can be easily seen). Intermittent Wiper Installation Instructions MGB 1967 to 1980 (Negative ground) MG Midget 1967 to 1974 (Negative Ground) PART # Rutherford St. P.O. Box 847 Goleta, CA FAX Tools needed: Wire cutters, 12V test lamp, pliers, 9/32 drill. w/green stripe. (Alternately, you can use a 9/16 socket and ratchet to drop the steering column, remove the covers using a #2 phillips screwdriver and follow the wires from the wiper control switch under the dashboard). Wiper bundle 2. Look under the dashboard for the bundles of wire coming out of the steering column. 3. Choose where you would like to put the switch. If the steering column is between that switch location and the harness bundles under the dashboard, you may want to use a 9/16 socket and ratchet to drop the steering column and run the harness for the intermittent wiper switch over the steering column. Be sure that there will be enough depth for the switch and its harness connector. 4. Locate the bundle that connects to the wiper control switch. The bundle for the wiper control switch will have wires with the following wire colors: blue w/ green stripe, dark green, red w/green stripe and brown 5. Connect the test lamp to ground. Turn on the ignition and move the wiper control stalk to its highest setting (2). Now check the red wire with green stripe in the wiper control switch bundle. It should light up with a bright steady light. Now, switch off the wiper motor. The test lamp should go out once the wiper motor has reached the parked position. Turn off the ignition. 6. If, and only if, the wire tested follows the behavior laid out in step 4, cut the red with green wire and move the ends away from each other. The wiper motor should now no longer function at low speed. Red w/ green Revised 05/05

2 MGB Intermittent Wiper Installation Instructions 7. Temporarily slide harness for the the intermittent wiper switch onto the switch. 10. Connect the red wire of the intermittent control switch harness, which connects to terminal 15, to a positive lead which is live only when the ignition swtich is on. On our 1979 car, the positive lead is a solid white wire located in the wire bundle going to the ignition switch. There are actually a couple of solid white wires connected to this terminal. It is NOT a white with red wire. Use a test lamp connected to ground to check that the wire is live only when the ignition switch is on. 53M 53S 8. Connect the cut end that connects to the wiper motor to the terminal on the intermittent wiper harness that connects to terminal 53M. Put the red w/green wire into the front tubular groove of the snap-lock connector. Insert the wiper harness wire into the rear tubular groove. Do not let the end of either wire hang out of the connector. Press the metal tab of the snap-lock connector firmly in with pliers. Then fold the plastic wing over the body of the snap-lock connector until it clicks into position. Solid white wire 9. Connect the cut end that goes into the steering column and connects to the wiper control stalk switch to the terminal on the intermittent wiper harness that connects to terminal 53S. Solid white wire Red wire 11. Cut the forked connector off of the brown wire of the intermittent wiper control harness. Connect the brown wire of the intermittent control switch harness, which connects to terminal 31, to a negative ground. On our 1979 car, the negative ground is a solid black wire located in the wire bundle going to the ignition switch. Note that there was a brown wire on our 1979 car that is NOT ground. You are looking for a black wire. Use a test lamp connected to the positive Revised 05/05

3 MGB Intermittent Wiper Installation Instructions lead from Step 9 to check that the black wire you have chosen is connected to ground. 12. Turn the intermittent wiper control switch all the way counter-clockwise until it clicks (this is the off position). Turn on the ignition. The low and high speed windshield wiper settings should work. Turn the wiper control switch to the Off position and turn the wiper control switch clockwise. The wipers should operate with a delay. The further clockwise that the switch is turned, the greater the delay (adjustable from 2 to 20 seconds). NOTE: If the high and low speed settings work, the wiper delay switch operates (listen or watch for the clicks as it opens & closes its circuit), but the wipers do not traverse the windshield, check to make sure that you have not reversed the connections to 53M and 53S. 13. Once you have verified proper switch operation, mount the switch in the location you chose in Step 3. If the steering wheel is between your chosen switch location and the harness bundle connections, you may want to use a 9/16 socket and ratchet to drop the steering column and run the harness for the intermittent wiper switch over the steering column. Make sure that there Black wire Control Harness Brown wire Black wire will be room behind the switch for the switch and its harness connector. Use a 9/32 drill bit to make the mounting hole. Avoid drilling into any wiring that may be behind the hole for the switch. Optionally, you can use two screws and the backing plate provided to mount the switch under the dashboard. 14. Look under the dashboard for the bundles of wire coming out of the steering column. stripe, black and brown w/green stripe. Connect the brown wire of the intermittent control switch harness, which connects to terminal 31, to a negative ground. On our 1979 car, the negative ground is a solid black wire located in the wire bundle going to the ignition switch. Note that there was a brown wire on our 1973 car that is NOT ground. You are looking for a black wire. Use a test lamp connected to the positive lead from Step 9 to check that the black wire you have chosen is connected to ground. Black wire 12.
