Media Outreach: The Basics Below are tips and advice to help with media outreach to promote your institution and the availability of the Precision Spectra System locally. When To Reach Out to Reporters To announce news out of your practice such as a new procedure or product you offer to patients o Reporters are often most interested in a story when you can put them in contact with local patients who can make the story come alive by providing interesting or unique personal perspectives. To build upon or piggy-back on national news or other trends receiving media coverage o If a story is popular in the national news, local reporters are always looking to cover how this news affects the local area. How to Contact Reporters Make a list of media contacts at local newspaper, TV and radio stations and update it periodically. o Include such information as the reporter s beat (i.e., topics he/she typically covers) and preferences for contact (e.g., phone vs. ). Medical, health and science editors or reporters and feature editors or reporters are typically most interested in healthcare stories. o If you cannot reach the editor or reporter, call the general number and ask for the assignment editor who will direct you to the best contact for the story angle. The best way to identify local reporters is to follow the news. o Watch local TV, listen to the radio and read the local newspaper to identify the reporters who cover the kind of medical stories most relevant to your practice and your patients. Do online research. o Nearly all newspapers, television and radio stations have a website with general contact information. Tools You Can Use to Contact Reporters Press Release o A press release is used to inform the media about a newsworthy topic, trend or interesting information. o Press releases can be sent to local media contacts or distributed via a news service or wire to a wider list of reporters who review them to obtain story ideas. o The best way to distribute a press release is via so you can reach the reporter as quickly as possible. Pitch o A pitch is targeted to a specific reporter and offers news or a story idea tailored to the reporter s interests, media outlet and its audience. It may also include background information about you and your expertise on the topic. 3

Additional Tips Call the reporter within a couple of hours of sending them the press release or pitch to gauge their interest level. When you call a reporter, contact him/her directly and do not call late in the afternoon as the reporter will generally be working on deadline for the next day s stories. If you information to a reporter, do not send an attachment unless the reporter has requested the document. Be persistent, but polite. If a reporter declines your story, ask them if it s okay for you to stay in touch in case anything changes. 4

Media Tip Sheet Once you have secured media interest in your story and have an interview scheduled, refer to the following tips and tricks to ensure the interview is a successful one. DO: Keep in mind your primary audience is patients and your primary objective is to make them aware of and help them understand SCS. Help the reporter within this framework and use analogies to explain SCS in lay terms (i.e., SCS is like a pacemaker for pain). Frame your answers at a level appropriate to the reporter (i.e., don t use jargon). A general reporter probably will not know the specifics of how the spinal cord works or how pain is transmitted. Stay within your own area of competence and comfort. If it is outside your area, say so and offer to get back to the reporter. It s okay to say you don t know, but remember to bridge back to what you do. Remember: You control the interview. a. Answer all questions with a message point. NOT: question answer; question answer BUT: question message; question message b. Use bridging and flagging techniques to get your point across. Examples include: What I m really here to talk about is What s really important here Don t forget that Another thing to remember is Let me just add that I think chronic pain patients would be interested in knowing Remember your message points. You have a story to deliver and to ensure it gets across to the reporter and ultimately to the target audience chronic pain patients. Seize the opportunity to make the points you want to make, always returning to your key messages when answering a reporter's question. But don't try to sell your practice to a reporter; try to educate. Correct the report quickly if they misinterpret what you are saying. When faced with a leading, rambling or confusing question, restate the question back to the reporter as you understand it and want to answer then proceed to answer that question. 5

DON T: Don t feel compelled to answer every question. If you don t know the answer, offer to look into it and get back to the reporter. Don t speak for others in the industry or interpret a competitor s position. During the Interview: Be confident. Speak in plain English, avoid jargon. Silence can be golden. If the reporter is quiet after you respond to a question, you should remain quiet as well. Resist the urge to fill the gaps. Speak in short, specific sound bites. If the reporter asks if you have anything to add, use the opportunity to repeat your message points. Have fun! 6

Precision Spectra World s First and Only 32 Contact SCS System One in three Americans suffer from chronic pain and more than 100 million people are partially or totally disabled by pain. 1 Chronic pain is defined as pain that has not gone away or recurs frequently. 2 Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) SCS may be prescribed for chronic intractable pain of the trunk and/or limbs, including unilateral or bilateral pain associated with failed back surgery syndrome, intractable low back pain and leg pain. It is a safe and effective treatment option that has been used for more than 40 years. With SCS, a patient will undergo a surgical procedure to surgically place an Implantable Pulse Generator. Thin wires, or leads, are then placed in the space above the spinal cord to best target the areas of pain. The ends of the leads contain contacts which deliver pain-masking signals to the spinal cord. When this happens, the painful sensation is replaced with a soothing, tingling sensation. 3 Precision Spectra SCS System The Precision Spectra SCS System is the world s first and only SCS system with 32 contacts and 32 dedicated power sources. Treating pain can be complex and pain patterns can change over time, which is why the Precision Spectra System is designed to provide more pain relief to a wide range of patients who suffer from chronic pain. Up until now, SCS systems have offered a maximum of 16 stimulating contacts and two lead ports. By doubling the number of contacts and lead ports, the Precision Spectra System offers more coverage of the spinal cord and increased flexibility to adapt to broader and/or changing pain patterns. In addition, with four ports, physicians have more choices to treat their patients pain at the time of implant and in the future. Defining the Future of SCS Therapy Boston Scientific has been at the forefront of developing medical innovations to help patients manage their pain. The Precision Spectra SCS System provides more coverage, flexibility and enhanced patient experience to help provide pain relief. COVERAGE With twice the contacts and 32 dedicated power sources, Precision Spectra covers more of the spinal cord than ever before FLEXIBILITY Four ports provide more choices for physicians to better manage patients ENHANCED PATIENT EXPERIENCE unique pain patterns Cordless accessories, including a remote control with a color display screen, a longer wireless range and a rechargeable battery with a faster charging rate For more information about SCS, please visit 1 Institute of Medicine ( Independence Back Institute ( 7

Chronic Pain What Is Chronic Pain? Chronic pain is persistent pain that never seems to go away. Chronic Pain is defined as pain that has not gone away or recurs frequently. 1 While the pain may not be constant, it is the dominant fact of life for many chronic pain sufferers. How Common Is Chronic Pain? One in three Americans suffer from chronic pain; more than 100 million people are partially or totally disabled by pain 2 and 40% of Americans experience daily pain. 3 It is the number-one cause of adult disability in the United States. 4 The annual national economic cost of chronic pain in the United States is an estimated $560 to $635 billion. 5 How Does Chronic Pain Affect Lives? Constant chronic pain may lead to depression, broken marriages, destroyed friendships, and isolation. Traditional treatment with pain medication can lead to drug addiction. Chronic pain can interfere with every aspect of a person s life: work relationships, self-esteem and emotional well-being. What Causes Chronic Pain? Chronic pain has many different causes. Sometimes normal aging may affect bones and joints in ways that cause chronic pain. Other common causes are nerve damage, and injuries that fail to heal properly. In many cases, however, the source of chronic pain can be so complex, it is very difficult to diagnose. What Are The Choices for Patients Who Suffer Chronic Pain? Conservative options include over-the-counter medications and physical therapy. More powerful prescription drugs can also be prescribed, but they can carry the twin dangers of addiction and a diminished ability to function. Invasive surgeries like spinal operations are another choice, but the recovery time is long. Spinal cord stimulation is another option delivering electrical signals to the spinal cord to mask pain signals. It is a reversible therapy that has helped thousands of people find relief from chronic pain Institute of Medicine ( 3. Pain Medicine ( 4. American Chronic Pain Association ( 5. 9 SPINAL CORD STIMULATION About Spinal Cord Stimulation Spinal Cord Stimulation, or SCS, may offer hope for many of the estimated 100 million people who suffer from chronic pain. 1 SCS sends electrical impulses that trigger nerve fibers along the spinal cord, masking the pain message traveling to the brain. When this happens, the painful sensation is replaced with a soothing, tingling sensation. SCS may be prescribed for chronic intractable pain of the trunk and/or limbs, including unilateral or bilateral pain associated with the following: failed back surgery syndrome, intractable low back pain and leg pain. Many people with failed back surgeries have had success with the SCS. It is most commonly used to treat low back and lower extremity pain. Thousands of patients with severe chronic painful conditions have received relief with spinal cord stimulation. About the Procedure Trialing One of the advantages of SCS therapy is that the patient gets to test drive an external version of the device to see if spinal cord stimulation is a treatment option for their pain. During the test drive, insulated leads are inserted through a needle or small incision in an anesthetized area near the spinal cord. As a part of the procedure, the patient may give the physician feedback on where to place the leads for maximum pain reduction. Once the physician locates the sweet spot, the leads are connected to an external trial stimulator that is tucked inside an external belt. The patient also gets a wireless remote control so they can increase or decrease the electrical impulses to manage their pain. The external version is typically worn anywhere from a few days to one week. This trial period gives the patient the opportunity to decide if SCS manages their pain. Permanent Implantation After the test drive, the patient and physician decide whether or not spinal cord stimulation is a therapy option. If they decide to go forward, then the patient will undergo another surgical procedure to surgically place an Implantable Pulse Generator. The leads may be inserted in a procedure similar to an epidural. In some cases, a physician may recommend a surgical lead, also known as a paddle lead. In this case, the paddle lead is placed at the target site during the surgical procedure. Patients may remain awake during this procedure, under local anesthesia and light sedation. In other cases, general anesthesia may be administered. Besides a cordless remote control, the patient will also receive a portable, cordless charger and a base station for the charger. 1.
