1 GOD CHOOSES DAVID (C.1.Fall.5) Biblical Reference 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Key Verse 1 Samuel 16:7 Key Concept When I see other people, I should look at not only their appearance, but their inner qualities. Educational Objectives At the end of the class today, the children will be able to: 1. Compare how the world judges and how God judges 2. Tell how Samuel chose David as the new king. 3. Say the memory verse LIFE APPLICATION Each person is important to God. Children and adults alike tend to judge people by what we can see. We are attracted to people who are physically good looking. But the real value of a person is what is on the inside. God values us because we are created by him. God looks at the attitude of our heart, not at our physical appearance. 2 INSTRUCTIONS Opening Prayer: Gather children around a candle. Light the candle and explain that we are entering into a special time with God. Encourage the children to hold their hands out in front of them palms up as a sign they are ready to receive what God has for them today. Prayer Example: Lord God, thank you for making us, for loving us, for forgiving us, and guiding us. We know you are here with us right now. As we enter into your word, the Bible, help us draw close to you, to understand and to listen to what you have to say to us. Amen (For safety sake, you may wish to extinguish the candle after the prayer) Bible Reading: Explain that as we read the Bible we do that first to spend time with God. Children can remain with hands out stretched palms up to receive the word as it s being read. Alternatively they can be invited to draw what they hear. Read the Bible passage for the day two times and ask children to respond. Question examples: What did you notice in this story? How does it make you feel? Was there anything you would ask God about that you didn t understand or was confusing? Is God saying anything to you though the story? Activity: In this lesson you will find a worksheet entitled Choosing a leader. Give each child a copy to work on individually. When everyone has finished take some time to talk about the theme of the worksheet together. Investigation: Divide the class into 3 groups. One group can decide what to do with the information they got from the worksheet Choosing a leader. The other group can gather their information based on a sheet entitled How to choose correctly. They can use the information on this sheet to put together their news report. One group can study the information about medicine during the time of David and do a report or interview with a doctor. Channel 7 news: The director (one of the children) can present the program and the anchor people. They will give a brief news recap. Have the group that studied the worksheet How to choose wisely go first. One of the anchor people could interview Samuel. The sons of Jesse could walk in front of the camera and each time one of them goes by Samuel can say, No, until David comes. The anchor person should say that David has been chosen and give a brief report on the moment he was anointed (1 Samuel 16:7). The other groups will also give their reports. 2 P a g e
3 Window Illustration: Have children look out a window. Please see last sheet for instructions. Prayer: Guide them in asking God to help them see other people as God sees them. Also, if there are children that want to take the step and pray to ask Christ to be their Savior and Lord, you can also guide them in this. Closing Prayer: Gather children around the candle again. As you light the candle explain that the flame is something that is present in the light and the darkness. In the same way, it reminds us that God is always with us. Is there anything anyone wishes to say to God? After children have responded, close the prayer time. Prayer Example: Lord God, we thank you that you are always with us, and always love us. It s good to be with you. Thank you for what we have learned today. Thank you for being with us and for teaching us through the Bible. Help us to remember what you have taught us today and to live it out when we leave. Amen 3 P a g e

5 WORKSHEET 2 How to choose wisely: 1 Samuel 16:5-13 Below you will find the names of the sons of Jesse. We only find a description for two of them and the names of four of them in the passage. But we can use our imagination to think about what the other sons must have been like as we read the descriptions of Eliab and the others. Write a description of each of them (using the Bible story and your imagination). You can use this description to give the news report for Channel 7 news. SONS OF JESSE Name Description Chosen? 1. 6 INFORMATION SHEET News about Medicine What people practiced and believed during the time of David 1. They believed that God promised good health if they obeyed the law (Exodus 15:26). Some of the laws that he had given them were: a. Relax and rest b. Eat healthy c. Don t drink contaminated water d. Practice good hygiene e. Practice precaution around people who are sick. 2. The people who visited a doctor were highly criticized. 3. They believed that sickness was a result of disobedience to the laws of God (Deuteronomy 28:60-61) 4. They believed the correct way to confront disease and sickness was through prayer (Numbers 21:7) 5. In other countries people did things differently a. Sickness was seen as evidence of evil spirits b. They used magic to try to cure illness c. They had developed the use of herbs d. There were expert brain surgeons (they made holes in the skull to let out the evil spirits. What they didn t know is that what they were really doing was letting out the pressure on the brain.) 6. Common practices among the Israelites a. They used charms to protect themselves from evil spirits b. They used crutches when they had a leg injury c. There is references to cleansing, bandages and ointment d. The medicine they used to help relieve pain were wine and myrrh e. Midwives have been around for many generations 6 P a g e

What do you focus on? Now picture God looking through the window at you 1. Do you think God focuses on the outside or inside? 2. What does God see? If children mention some bad things as well as good remind them that God will forgive them if they ask. God rejoices in everyone who does good and turns away from evil.
