Introduction: Importance of this chapter Main idea - God sees differently than we see. [optical illusions - misleading pictures] We think we can look at a situation and understand it from a glimpse or glance, but we can t. Setting the scene: The monarchy of Israel has been established, against the warnings of Samuel the prophet and apart from the direction of God their true King. Saul is selected, in a sense, to give the people what they wanted. A tall, handsome leader who can lead the Israelites in battle against their enemies. At his inauguration Samuel warns the nation and the king: And now behold the king whom you have chosen, for whom you have asked; behold, the Lord has set a king over you. If you will fear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well. But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king. (1 Samuel 12:13 15, ESV)

Your failure or your success is not based on good looks or height, not on brains or braun, but on your continued reverence for God. When the cracks in Saul s character begin to be evident in chapter 13, we see that he thinks of himself as a higher authority than God, Samuel tells him this: But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you. (1 Samuel 13:14, ESV) There is a strong theme of heart-loyalty in these chapters. It is developed in 14 and 15, and for the past few weeks we ve been focusing on the notion that God is interested in true obedience from our hearts rather than any external sacrificial religious duty. Samuel is given the agonizing task of going to his former protege Saul and inform him that God has rejected him from being king. This was no easy job for Samuel, he spent a sleepless night in prayer beforehand he cried to the Lord all night (15:11) and after he delivered his message of rejection he grieved over Saul (15:35). And this was not a temporary short lived mourning. It evidently went one for some time, because here in the start of the next chapter God has to tell him to knock it off and get to work! There is more to be done, this story isn t over yet. In this chapter we finally meet the man who is after God s own heart although it s a bit of a surprise who he turns out to be The Lord said to Samuel, How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for Myself a king among his sons. (1 Samuel 16:1, ESV) Fill your horn with oil - Samuel would have known what that means; it was king anointing time! Jesse of Bethlehem: Jesse is Boaz and Ruth s grandson. We read the great love story between the wealthy Israelite Boaz and the distressed Moabite widow Ruth. They are married and have a son, who has a son, who is Jesse. [Slide] From this time on the name of Jesse, the city of Bethlehem and the tribe of Judah will always be linked with Israel s Messiah. I have provided for Myself a king from among his sons - suggests a contrast with the circumstances surrounding Saul s selection, when YHWH made a concession for the sake of the people.

And Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you. (1 Samuel 16:2 3, ESV) It is dangerous work to anoint a rival king while the current king is still in office. Think of the rage of King Herod when the wise men announced their intended search for the new king that had been born king of the jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. When Herod the king heard this he was very troubled, and all of Jerusalem with him. - Matt 2 Samuel would like to avoid this if possible. Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, Do you come peaceably? (1 Samuel 16:4, ESV) Concern about offending Saul - Concern about offending Samuel - And he said, Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. (1 Samuel 16:5, ESV) Specifically invites Jesse and his family - because that is who God told him to anoint. The Lord said go, so Samuel went. We can see Samuel s greatness in carrying out the Lord s command despite the possible risk to his life. This teaches us what mattered was simple obedience. (He wasn t just going to criticise others for failing to obey God s commands, he modeled it as well.) When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, Surely the Lord s anointed is before him. (1 Samuel 16:6, ESV) As soon as he sees Eliab, Samuel has an intuitive hunch that he knows what is going to happen next. The firstborn son was impressive looking, likely very successful. Later on we see him speaking on behalf of the other brothers, seems like a natural leader. The firstborn son has a place of prominence in hebraic thinking, preened for leadership, the inheritor of the family name and the family line and all of the family property and blessings. But When we are mesmerized, God is not. Eliab was good looking, perhaps impressive to Samuel, but we are reminded of a previous good looking kingly candidate: Then they ran and took him from there. And when he stood among the

people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. And Samuel said to all the people, Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people. And all the people shouted, Long live the king! (1 Samuel 10:23 24, ESV) But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, ESV) YHWH s eyesight. He is not limited or restricted by physical eyes, which may actual become a hindrance to seeing reality. There are certain characteristics that are invisible to the human eye. We say things like you can t judge a book by its cover and appearances are deceptive but we still need to be reminded of it. While humans see (or are limited by) outward appearances God has the superior vantage point of seeing the heart. Looks can be deceiving and they often are. Many people around David don t assume that he will amount to much. He is too young, too inexperienced and too insignificant to amount to anything. Good news of God s heart-sight. The amount of things that go unnoticed by man are noticed by God. For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. (Hebrews 6:10, ESV) The bad news: 1. Every wrong deed will be remembered and taken account of on that day. a. Every careless word uttered (Matt 12:36) b. Every deed done will be brought to light and receive judgment i. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. Eccl 12:14 c. God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ Romans 2:16 d. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. (Luke 12:2 3, )

What a reminder to women and men that God cares more about the heart than the outward appearance. What are you spending the most time cultivating? But David is the precursor to one greater than he, to the Messiah, who also bore no especially striking physical characteristics. He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. (Isaiah 53:2 3, ESV) When David s greatest Son finally did arrive, the world did not recognise Him because they saw Him only with human eyes. But by the grace of God some learn to perceive the deeper reality of His coming, to look beyond superficial appearances in order to discern the truth. (Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but My Father in heaven) To these the Messiah gives the privilege of becoming the children of God, not through physical birth bit through spiritual rebirth. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:10 13, ESV) v 8-12 The surprise of YHWHs choice David is absent. So Samuel insists that they go get him. He is the one. Again wee see God s strange and refreshing way of trampling on human standards. Perhaps at no other time did the living God disclose a more flabbergasting choice than in the case of David s greater Descendant. The vote was in. The folks at home said He s just one of us! (Mark 6:3) Others complained He has too much fun (Matt 11:18-19) and still others objected He s not from the right place (John 7:41-42). But the clincher for many was that Messiah s don t suffer (Matt 27:42-43) and what clout did their opinion pack? None. The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone (Ps 118:22, 1 Peter 2:4) We should delight over YHWH s unusual, unguessable ways. It all began here - as David was keeping the sheep. No wonder the LORD would later say of David, in Psalm 78:70-72: He also chose David His servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the ewes that had young He brought him, to shepherd Jacob His people, and Israel His inheritance. So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands. (Psalm 23)
