3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. <br><br> The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? J Colin English Elementary School is located in North Fort Myers, Florida. It is unique in that it combines the historical with the modern. The original school building, built in 1928, retains its historical character while being surrounded by state of the art classrooms. Every classroom has Smart Boards and at least four student computers. In addition, we have two computer labs and one of the best sound systems in all of Lee County on our Physical Education Pavilion. We currently have 421 students enrolled from Pre-K through Grade 5. In the last three years, we have had a couple changes. In , we had a change in administration for our assistant principal. Also, in , we were granted authorization to pursue status as an International Baccalaureate World School (IB). In , we became a Positive Behavior School (PBS). Our IB program is designed for students aged three to twelve years old. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs with a strong emphasis on academic development. J. Colin English is the only school in the "West Zone" to offer this type of program to students. Through this IB program, we develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who will create a better and more peaceful world. J. Colin English is in its fifth year of being a Positive Behavior School (PBS). That means we focus on the positives and celebrate successes! We have five school-wide expectations that empower all our students to do their best. These expectations are to be Safe, Orderly, Attentive, Respectful Self-Managers (S O A R S). Regarding personnel, our Principal has been a leader at our school for over 7 years. He worked at JCE as an Assistant Principal from He left after being promoted to become a Principal. He returned in 2008 to JCE as the principal and has remained in this position since. Our Assistant Principal came to JCE in Previously she worked at other schools as an administrator. Regarding staff, we have 35 instructional staff and 25 non-instructional staff. J. Colin English is home to a Lee County Golden Apple Teacher Winner, two National Board Certified Teachers and four APPLES Peer Teachers. One of our staff members is going through the APPLES program and we currently have two TIF Teachers. The retention rate of staff is very high. We have only a few new staff to our school this year. Below is a list of our school student demographics: 180 Caucasian 33 African American 116 Hispanic 4 Asian / Pacific Islander 0 Native American 9 Mulit-racial 95% Free-Reduced Lunch 33 English as a Second Language 17 K - 5 students with IEP's # Pre-K students with IEP Some of the unique features and challenges about the community the school serves is the ratio of free and reduced lunch and the students' Page 2

5 family structure. The majority of students that attend our school meet the requirements for free and reduced lunch. They come from homes with very limited financial resources. Many of the students are being raised by an individual other than their biological parents. Emotionally and behaviorally many of our students pose greater needs than other children. Page 3

Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Below are our vision, mission and IB mission statements. Each year we review all of these statement with all stakeholders. Vision: At J. Colin English Elementary our vision is to develop "Learners for Life" Mission: At J. Colin English Elementary, our mission is to inspire young people to become internationally-minded "World Changers" by providing them with an inquiry-based learning environment that promotes global understanding and respect. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Mission Statement: The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. Our PBS expectations, SOARS - Safe, Orderly, Attentive, Respectful Self Managers, assist our school in achieving its vision and mission statements because through SOARS students are able to become "Learners for Life" and represent the IB Learner Profiles. By embracing the IB mission statement and working diligently to create a strong Primary Year Program our students grow to be personified versions of the ten Learner Profiles (Principled, Caring, Balanced, Open-Minded, Thinkers, Knowledgeable, Inquirers, Reflective, Risk-Takers, Communicators). 7 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Notable Achievements in last 3 years: has had several notable achievements in the last 3 years. Our 4th grade students have had the top FCAT writing scores in the district 2 years in a row. In the first year of implementation of STAR Early Lit as a measure for kindergarten success, our students had the top scores in the district. J. Colin English has also received recognition for our outstanding volunteer program in receiving the Golden School Award as well as the Five Star School Award. We also believe in recognizing our teachers for their amazing commitment to students. A Day Better Program sponsored by Office Max has chosen a teacher from our school the last two years and last year Coach Morgan Wright was a Golden Apple winner. J. Colin was also the recipient of a few grants; Target, $5,000 Laura Bush Grant for our library, and PBS grants. To meet the needs of our families, we have the Blessings in a Backpack Program as well as the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Areas for Improvement An academic focus over the next three years will be to raise our math scores, more specifically increase the number of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students proficient. This year we have implemented a math facts program school-wide to target basic computation skills as well as a math tutoring program two days a week for our students with level 1, 2, and 3 FCAT scores. We also have a TIF teacher who specifically works with 2nd-5th grade students and teachers on math strategies and concepts. In addition, we would like to increase our parent involvement and work towards becoming a PBS model school. Page 5
