3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1
4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Roosevelt Elementary has 380 students. Approximately 37% are free and reduced, 27% are minority and 15% are ESE students. We have 9 ESE self-contained supported unit students.the remaining ESE students are either Language Impaired, Specific Learning Disabled or are on the spectrum for Autism. These students are fully included with ESE teachers providing support during the school day within their classroom. The only exception to this would be our speech students pulled for speech therapy. We are unique in that we have a large military population, 26%. This can cause mobility and this population would be where most of our mobility comes from. Cocoa Beach is a beach community with a "small town" feel. There are approximately 11,000 residents in Cocoa Beach with a median age of 56. The strength of our Cocoa Beach stakeholders was shown several times within the past 5 years. Our district has had budget concerns and closed 2 schools. Our school was also on the closure list each of the times the district has brought that to the public. Our community members made it very evident that they didn't want our school to close. Roosevelt is the only home school for Cocoa Beach residents. We have a choice school within a 3 block radius but that school uses a lottery system to define their student population. It has mostly out of area students. The other elementary school closest to us would be Cape View which is Cape Canaveral's home school and is filled to projection. Closing Roosevelt would mean our students would be bussed beyond their home town and our residents made certain to make the district aware of all the logistical issues with closing Roosevelt. Also, the local businesses, political figures and real estate agencies were very involved during this whole process as well. Luckily, the district was able to pass a ½ penny sales tax and we won't have to worry about this again. Obviously our parents were great supporters of this sales tax and did a great deal to help it pass in the Cocoa Beach area. One change that has impacted Roosevelt a great deal is a change in military policy regarding military families moving bases. It used to be that they would wait until Christmas or Summer to make those transitions. In the last couple of years, that policy has changed, and military families move when the military needs them to do so. This causes issues with class size and helping students make up missed curriculum to where other students are currently when they move to Roosevelt. I would say that is one of our biggest areas of concern. Our next largest area of concern, are students who come from the lower priced rental properties in Cocoa Beach. Those students are often our free/reduced lunch students who have unique family situations such as one parent households or students living with other relative members. The majority of our families are involved parents and because of this we have a very active PTO. Our PTO is a major resource for both monetary funds as well as helping with community events such as our Ziti dinner, curriculum nights and other special functions. Page 2
5 School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Vision: Roosevelt is an enriching environment where our community encourages life-long learning to reach our full potential. Our mission is to set high expectations and create a rigorous learning environment that cultivates collaboration throughout our school community to help our students reach their full potential. Students setting personal goals, teachers using essential questions and writing across content areas are three of our biggest initiatives. Using collaboration with students has been a basis for incorporating discussion and thinking in the "understanding" stages of teaching. Teachers help guide students in setting personal academic and social goals based on students' needs. This helps students make the connection between being responsible for their learning and its results. This is a school wide celebration in that teachers choose one student a month who has worked hard and either met their goal or are making great strides toward it. These students are called "star" students and we have a monthly celebration where we recognize them on the morning announcements and they share their accomplishment with the gym teacher and administration. Teachers use essential questions to begin with the end in mind and help students understand where they are going in their learning. Writing across content areas has been a huge push these last couple of years. Roosevelt has had a history of struggling with writing which has shown in state writing scores. Teachers worked on incorporating writing across content areas to use as formative and summative assessments as well as a means for students to synthesize their learning. Rubrics are used when scoring writing and both writing and content standards are assessed with this. This has helped teachers increase rigor with content and academic expectations from students. This year the district has implemented the following initiative "Unit by Design" planning across the district. Our hope is that continuing to beginning with the end in mind, focusing on higher order thinking activities that use writing across content areas and to plan with the transition statement, understanding and acquisition components of the "Unity by Design" planning, will increase our ability to plan lessons that engage students and encourage life-long learning in order for them to reach their full potential. In addition to this broad view across the school, we also focus on students' individual needs through data meeting and collaborative planning. In order to help students with the "whole person" we have many after school activities available including environmental, art, academic support, chorus, choir, technical and chess clubs. Page 3
6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Roosevelt made great gains for the school year , Roosevelt increased their number of points earned for school grade more than any other school in the district. After looking and reflecting upon data, we were glad our efforts in planning and implementing instruction using data to deliver focused intervention instruction resulted in our students making substantial gains across the board especially for our lowest 25% of students. Tier 2 and 3 instruction for FCAT grades proved to be successful. Our focus on data meetings MTSS, and using a variety of intervention strategies and instructional practices to meet struggling students' needs were the reasons our students made gains. We do not have state scores for the FSA to measure how we did for and we will not have two like assessments to measure growth but we are anxiously awaiting results and any correlations the state can provide in order to see how our "writing across content areas" along with other initiatives worked. We did see overall reading growth according to our district common reading assessment. One area we know we need to continue to aggressively pursue to increase in is writing. Therefore, we are continuing with " writing across content areas" initiative and it will help with rigor in lessons as well as requiring students to apply their learning. Page 4
7 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. Our ancillary self sufficient programs such as the cafeteria and school aged child care always meet all of the district requirements that are set forth for those programs. We are very lucky in that we have several teachers who provide after school activities either on their own time or for very limited supplements. We currently have environmental, art, photography and chess clubs. In addition, our music teacher provides after school programs for students interested in both choir and orchestra. In addition, we have teachers who tutor students at 7:30 a.m. on their own time. Since we are not a title 1 school, we do have limited additional resources. However, we are very lucky in that we have a super active PTO, volunteer and parent base. They do many fundraisers and evening events to provide family time for our students. Another outstanding resource, is our business partnerships. We have 10 local business partners who provide any number of items or services as needed. One example is when we have our evening events, restaurant business partners will provide meals for 5.00 and give 10% back to the school That way families can come to evening events without having to worry about dinner. This helps make turnout for these events to be outstanding. Overall, all stakeholders at Roosevelt know how important education is and that the community school can be a great way to help promote both community and family events where students and their families spend time together.
