Emergency Mental Health Response Services THE OVERALL GOALS ARE TO QUICKLY RESPOND TO INDIVIDUALS IN CRISIS AND FOR INDIVIDUALS TO REMAIN SAFELY IN THE COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING SUPPORT AND LINKAGES TO PREVENT HOSPITALIZATION

Emergency Mental Health Response Services Mobile Outreach Program Provides on-site face-to-face mental health evaluations, with the goal being to maintain a client safely in the community and to prevent unnecessary presentations at local psychiatric emergency rooms. When this is not possible, staff have the responsibility and authority to enact a 9.45 Involuntary Transport to a psychiatric emergency room. Provides lethality assessments to assess for lethality towards self (suicide) or lethality towards others. Ability to link clients (who are at risk of psychiatric hospitalization) to mental health treatment, usually within five business days, as a way to prevent hospitalization.

Emergency Mental Health Response Services Included within the Mobile Outreach Program are Jail Diversion Services This service is available to law enforcement to provide an alternative to arrest for individuals with mental illness, who (as a result of their mental illness) have committed a low-level, non-violent, and victimless crime. Staff can rapidly report on-site to provide crisis intervention, assessment, referrals and, when necessary, 9.45 transports to a local psychiatric emergency room.

Emergency Mental Health Response Services Trauma Response Program Provides crisis intervention 24 hours a day to individuals, families, groups, schools and businesses who have been exposed to a traumatic event, including but not limited to suicide, community violence, motor vehicle accidents, death of a child, or workplace death. Staff can provide immediate on-site, short-term, crisisoriented services to stabilize those impacted. At the conclusion of services, staff can refer individuals to ongoing, longer term services such as grief counseling, mental health treatment or support groups.

Emergency Mental Health Response Services Police Mental Health Coordination Project Collaboration between law enforcement and the emergency mental health system of Erie County to offer coordinated response to the needs of people with mental illness.

Emergency Mental Health Response Services Mobile Transitional Support Program This program, currently in development in the Spring of 2015, provides services to individuals coming out of ECMC and BPC inpatient stays. This short-term service (up to three months) provides support and clinical intervention to individuals prior to and upon release, with the goals being to divert the individual from re-admission to the hospital and to assist the individual in gaining secure linkage to ongoing mental health services in the community. Services are provided by a team of one clinician and one mental health peer.

Crisis Services Crisis Intervention Team Training Project Specialized training for law enforcement in dealing with individuals with mental illness Creation of teams of officers within jurisdictions designated to respond to identifed mental health calls Focuses on identification of mental illness and referral to appropriate resource

Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County fosters a community of hopefulness, safety and shared responsibility to prevent suicide and suicide attempts by increasing awareness, promoting resiliency and facilitating access to resources. The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County was a result of the New York State Garrett Lee Smith Grant. In 2012 the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County was established. This Coalition is a group of community stakeholders including but not limited to mental health, substance abuse, prevention education, various school districts and county leaders like the Dept. of Mental Health, Dept of Health and the Erie County Medical Examiner s office.

Crisis Services 24 hour hotline

How to Access Services Call Our hotline counselors can provide access to numerous referrals and information on community resources Crisis Services programs can assist with cases of mental health crisis (suicide, mental health etc.), response to a traumatic incident, domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and homelessness.

Volunteer Opportunities The Crisis Counseling Program offers individuals opportunities to help others in times when they need someone the most, their time of crisis. The hotline responds to calls 24 hours a day on a wide variety of issues and acts as the hub of the agency filtering the calls for the other programs. To become a member of the Crisis Counseling Team you must go through an extensive training program that provides you with the important information and necessary skills that you will utilize as a phone counselor.

Volunteer Opportunities The Advocate Program is the Rape Crisis Center for Erie County and can offer many services to any individual in the county who is affected by the trauma of family violence, rape and sexual assault. The most valuable service we provide is 24 hour crisis intervention to assault victims, significant others and their family in 11 emergency departments in Erie County. To become a part of the Advocate Team we have an extensive training program which provides information on the dynamics of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, the medical and legal aspects a survivor encounters, and the emotional impact a survivor may experience after a sexual assault or domestic violence incident.
