MOTOR SKILLS Teaching Drawing Skills (2nd edition) Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2010 Includes information on: developmental aspects of drawing skills, to promote the development of drawing skills, games and activities. Teaching Scissor Cutting Skills (2nd edition) Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2007 Includes information on developmental aspects of scissor cutting skills: games activities identification of strategies for teaching scissor cutting skills to the child with Down syndrome. Modified Scissors - Left or Right Handed Spring loaded scissors are modified to facilitate the development of scissor cutting skills. 10 3
4 EARLY INTERVENTION Chatter Challenge Program Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2012 This program was developed to meet parent need to incorporate speech and language activities, that were developmentally appropriate, into their daily life. It has a focus on pre-speech and provides activities in the areas of listening, attending, feeding, oral motor, receptive, expressive and social language and speech. Australasian Dictionary of Sign With permission, a photocopied version of the original signing dictionary produced by the Victorian School of the Deaf. Preschool Functional Skills Checklist Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 1998 A functional skills checklist for children with developmental delay/down syndrome who are in transition from Early Intervention programs to Preschool. This includes painting, pasting, sand/water play, gross motor skills and toileting. BEHAVIOUR Behaviour Management in the Junior / Primary Years (now on CD rom) Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 1999 Includes information on: learning styles, methodology, classroom management, yard management, toileting, designing behaviour programs, buddy systems, Mandatory reporting, social skills/friendships. Behaviour Management - Secondary Supplement Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2000 Includes information on: transitions, relationships and sexuality. Unit 4: Puberty for Boys teach the student about male body changes at puberty, managing erections and wet dreams, understanding moods and feelings, and hygiene in puberty. Unit 5: Puberty and Beyond This unit presents specific information for males and females about masturbation (public/ private and hygiene), keeping private when changing in public changerooms, information about the changes that occur to the opposite sex at puberty, and specific procedures for young women who wish to use tampons. MODULE 3 PERSONAL SAFETY Unit 1: Public and Private teach the student about public and private as it relates to behaviour, language, places and body parts. Unit 2: Interpersonal Boundaries teach the student about identifying the names of circles and the appropriate greeting for each circle. Unit 3: Safety in the Community-Child A comprehensive workbook for the student aged 6-12 years that provides lesson plans and activity sheets to teach the student about staying safe at home and when in the community. Unit 4: Assertiveness help the student to develop skills to respond assertively in unsafe situations and to identify when and where to get help for his or her own personal safety. Boundary Training Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2004 A booklet designed to assist Teachers and Support personnel implement boundary training for the student with Down syndrome both in the classroom and playground. 4 9
5 Unit 5: Feelings A A comprehensive workbook that provides activity sheets and strategies for teaching The student about feelings. This includes happy, sad, angry, hurt, sick, tired and how do I feel?. Unit 6: Feelings B A comprehensive workbook that provides activity sheets and strategies for teaching The student about feelings. This includes scared, silly, frustrated, teasing, harassment, anxious and how do I feel?. MODULE 2 SEXUALITY Unit: Body Parts A A comprehensive workbook providing lesson plans and activity sheets to help a child with Down syndrome to learn the appropriate names for body parts including: Head hair, face, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth, tongue, chin. Body- shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, stomach. Legs- knees, feet, toes. Private Parts Penis, vulva, bottom. Unit 2: Body Parts B A comprehensive workbook providing further lesson plans and activity sheets to help a child with Down syndrome to learn the appropriate names for body parts including: Head forehead, eyebrows, eyelashes, cheeks, lips, neck. Body elbow, wrist, palm, fingernails, waist, hips. Legs thigh, shin, ankle, heel, toenails. Private Parts testes (testicles), vagina, breasts Unit 3: Puberty for Girls teach the student about female body changes at puberty, managing menstrual care, understanding moods and feelings, and hygiene in puberty. LITERACY Reading Getting Started (Includes Literacy Record) Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2003 This booklet provides a step-by-step guide for Preschool/School personnel in developing and implementing a reading program for the emergent reader. A formal record keeping booklet is included with Reading Getting Started. Literacy Record Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2000 This is a formal record keeping booklet to be used in conjunction with Reading Getting Started. Teaching Pre-writing Skills (2nd edition) Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2003 Includes information on: developmental aspects of pre-writing skills, games and activities for developing pre-writing skills, identification of specific difficulties and strategies for teaching pre-writing skills to the child with Down syndrome. Spell to Write Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2005 The book outlines a highly structured program designed to accommodate the specific learning styles of the student with Down syndrome. The program aims to teach spelling to enable the student to construct meaningful written language. The reading skills outlined in Reading, Getting Started are a pre-requisite to using this program. The Spell to Write kits are designed to be used with the book as they provide a spelling approach without the need for handwriting skills. Spell to Write Getting Started Kit / Moving On Kit Produced by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2005 The kits consist of laminated alphabet letters in a convenient carry case and Velcroed baseboards to create words. The Getting Started kit consists of larger letters and a simplified base board designed for 5-8 years of age and/ or students with fine motor delay. The Moving On kit consists of smaller letters, a Look, Cover, Write, Check baseboard that links to a laminated Look, Cover, Write, Check writing baseboard. 8 5
6 MATHS & MONEY Maths and Money (now with a CD of resources for classroom use) Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, 2006 The Maths and Money program takes students through seven developmental stages in the areas of space, number, money, time and measuring. These skills/ concepts have been identified as essential core numeracy skills for independence. The program contains strategies to support the teaching of these concepts to students with Down syndrome. Proformas of worksheets and resources are included for classroom use. Right to Know CD ROM A Comprehensive Program Written and Published by Down Syndrome South Australia, This comprehensive resource addresses the specific learning styles of individuals with Down syndrome and intellectual disability, and provides a comprehensive resource kit for personnel to implement appropriate programs about friendships, sexuality and personal safety. This CD ROM includes all modules and units available, and will run on both Macintosh and PC. Right to Know Manual (About the Program) The booklet also outlines Module Content, Unit Structure, Session Structure and How to use the Right to Know Program. It also provides general information about Down syndrome, which includes an overview of Medical Issues, Communication, Cognitive Development and Specific Learning Difficulties. MODULE ONE FRIENDSHIPS Teachers Survival Guide The teacher's guides differ from the other units in this module in that they provide information and strategies for teachers to use in supporting social interaction, rather than teaching materials to be used with the student. Unit 1: About Me A comprehensive workbook providing activity sheets for the young person with Down syndrome to develop self awareness and self esteem. Unit 2: About Others A comprehensive workbook that assists the student to focus on the physical characteristics, family members and interests of their friends. Stage 2 expands their knowledge about their particular friend/s. Unit 3: Personal Space An informative booklet that provides a series of lesson plans to teach personal space ie standing and sitting at an appropriate distance from another person. Unit 4: Personal Care Child An informative booklet that provides a series of lesson plans and worksheets for teaching grooming skills. This includes nose hygiene, eating skills, understanding dress code, Looking Cool. 6 7
