2 What is a vision? An overarching statement, or series of statements, describing what you want your neighbourhood area to be like at the end of the plan period It may cover what the area will look like, what facilities will be needed and what it will be like to live and work there It should be concise and locally distinctive Aspirational but grounded

We anticipate consumer need and deliver outstanding products and services that improve people's lives. Google: To organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Nike: To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world. 3

4 Capturing the essence of your area! What is unique about? What do you like best about? What does the area look like now? What might it look like at the end of the plan period? 4

5 At a city level: The vision for London Over the years to 2031 and beyond, London should: excel among global cities expanding opportunities for all its people and enterprises, achieving the highest environmental standards and quality of life and leading the world in its approach to tackling the urban challenges of the 21st century, particularly that of climate change. Achieving this vision will mean making sure London makes the most of the benefits of the energy, dynamism and diversity that characterise the city and its people; embraces change while promoting its heritage, neighbourhoods and identity; and values responsibility, compassion and citizenship. 6 At a neighbourhood level: Our vision is to conserve Birdham as a beautiful harbour-side parish with a close, supportive community at its heart, promote a sustainable thriving economy with a robust infrastructure and maintain the AONB and character of the harbour, canal and its rural and agricultural surroundings Birdham Neighbourhood Plan

7 What are objectives? Will set out what you want to achieve in order to help make the vision a reality For each element of the vision there may be one or a number of objectives Detailed policies and proposals will then follow from these objectives

8 Link between vision and objectives Vision: Thame must maintain its character as a real market town Objectives: continue to feel compact continue to have a close relationship with the open countryside around it retain its markets continue to act as a centre for the surrounding area, not just residents remain attractive to residents and visitors. 8

13 Bringing it all together: Design charrette (for example, Enquiry by Design) More formal approach: process that brings together key people to collaborate on a vision for a new or revived community. 14 Consult on the vision and objectives Draft vision and objectives need to be tested: do the wider community agree with the emerging vision and objectives? Opportunity to get community buy in Range of methods can be used

15 How should the vision and objectives influence policy direction? Identify the emerging topics e.g. retail, housing, open space and public realm Separate these into land use and non land use: Identify land use issues that can be addressed through the neighbourhood plan Proposals and projects can form part of a separate document or an appendices
