3 Salary: is a fixed compensation paid for labor or services. Most salaries are paid for fixed periods of working hours. Activity Students will work on their projects after conducting research in order to answer all the essential lesson questions in a PowerPoint Presentation. Lesson Procedures 1. Distribute Presentation Requirements handout to explain the requirements of the assignment. Review the questions and sentence frames on the handout to ensure student understanding. 2. Students will use information from the California CareerZone (CareerZone) to complete the presentation requirements. If they do not already have an occupation to base their presentation on, they can use the CareerZone s Quick Assessment to identify one. It may be useful to review the Holland Codes by reviewing What are Holland Codes? before completing the Quick Assessment. IMPORTANT: State and federal laws govern the conditions and limitations for Internet usage by children under the age of 13. Before using the Internet, check your district policies and/or state and federal regulations. 3. Demonstrate the CareerZone (link in Materials section). Begin by choosing the Assess Yourself option. Select the Quick Assessment. Review the Holland Codes by reviewing What are Holland Codes (link in Materials section). Follow the Assess Yourself directions and then select View Results. Choose one example occupation and review the information that is available for completing the presentation. Time should be allotted for questions and answers. 4. Review the Storyboard worksheet with students before they begin creating their presentations. Read the PowerPoint Presentation Tips to help students develop their presentations. 3 of 7
4 5. Assign the due date to students. Confirm your students have computer and internet access at home or in the school computer lab to continue working on their project outside of class. 6. Set up a schedule and have students give their PowerPoint presentations. Estimated Time Multiple class sessions for preparation and presentations. Evaluation Create a PowerPoint Presentation and present it to the class. Adaptations Work in a small group or with a partner to complete the PowerPoint Presentation. Have students research the course offerings at their probable middle and high school to identify courses they could take that would help them prepare for an occupation. Have students include this information in the presentation. Attribution This lesson was adapted from Pennsylvania Career Education & Work Standards; Curriculum Search, Grade 5, Strand 13.1 Zoning In On a Career. The Web address is 4 of 7
5 Instructor s Presentation Tips 1. Have your students work with a storyboard before creating their PowerPoint presentations this will save a lot of time. You can use the PowerPoint Presentation Storyboard Outline (last page) or create a format that will work best for your students. 2. Review students storyboards before they start using PowerPoint. 3. You might want to give students an established format to follow. For example, Slide 1: Title, student name, image/graphic Slide 2: The occupation I choose is because. Slide 3: This occupation requires education and training. Slide 4: This occupation is adding or losing jobs per year. Slide 5: For this occupation, I need to know. Slide 6: For this occupation, I need to be able to. Slide 7: This occupation has a salary range of to. Slide 8: The End 4. Depending on the level of computer skills your students possess, it may be helpful to limit the PowerPoint software features (the bells and whistles) you allow students to use. For example, animation, audio, and transitions. 5. While students are working with PowerPoint, remind them to frequently save their file.
6 Presentation Requirements The following six questions must be answered in your project. Use the Quick Assessment at the California CareerZone, click on Assess Yourself ( to choose and research an occupation. If you need to see the Holland Code definitions that are used in the Quick Assessment go to the What Are Holland Codes page ( 1. What occupation have I chosen and why?
