5 ANN TANKSLEY Nude Figures oil on paper Ann Tanksley demonstrates her extraordinary skill as a technician in this series of figure drawings. As in all her work, her use of dominating contour lines suggest a three-dimensionality, intensified here by her exaggerated psychological distortion and her choice of very strong and forthright colors. Tanksley makes a statement with a single line. Her figures lack detail but in a strange way manifest a total gesture with a mere twist of a line. 8 ANN TANKSLEY Monotypes and Monoprints from the Images of Zora Series Based on the writings of Zora Neale Hurston, the original series of 60-odd prints was first shown in New York in 1991 in an exhibition titled Zora: A Visual Interpretation of Zora Neale Hurston: Prints by Ann Tanksley. The art critic Raymond Steiner described it then as one of the most visually stimulating exhibitions I ve seen for some time. Images of Zora, an expanded collection of her interpretations subsequently toured the United States in the early 1990 s and was reprised at Avisca Fine Art Gallery in These prints were a part of Tanksley s solo exhibition, Images of Zora at Avisca Fine Art Gallery in August All are archivally framed.
