The Effects of Trees on Air Quality Halton Partners for Clean Air

How can trees improve air quality? 1) Removal of pollutants 2) Production of oxygen 3) Removal of carbon Indirect reduce energy needs Direct through photosynthesis Carbon neutral programs 4) Production of VOCs

1. Removal of pollutants Pollutants are removed by: Gaseous uptake through plant stomata Direct interception of airborne particles Most commonly removed: nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) ozone (O 3 ) carbon monoxide (CO) small particulate matter

1. Removal of pollutants Factors that influence removal: tree size health canopy cover age Fact: Large healthy trees (>77cm diameter) remove 70X more air pollution then small healthy trees (<8cm diameter) (Nowak, 1994).

2. Production of oxygen Trees give off oxygen as a byproduct of their metabolic processes (photosynthesis) Fact: One large tree can produce enough daily oxygen for up to four people!

3. Indirect removal of carbon Cooling: Strategically placed trees can provide shade to lower temperatures and reduce the demand for air conditioning Evapotransipration Heating: Planting evergreens can lower windspeeds and reduce the need for heating in the wintertime

3. Direct removal of carbon Trees naturally remove CO 2 from the air and store it as woody biomass Fact: Planting 110 trees on average will sequester 1 tonne of CO 2 a year

3. Direct removal of carbon The Carbon Neutral Program: A program that offers government departments, private corporations and individuals the opportunity to offset their carbon production by planting trees Many different programs exist

Grow Clean Air project Specifically they: 3. Direct removal of carbon The Carbon Neutral Program: The Tree Canada Foundation offers Canada s official carbon neutral program as part of their Estimate the amount of carbon used annually Estimate the number of trees needed to offset this amount within a given time period arrange the site selection, landowner contact, seedling transportation, tree seedling purchase, site preparation, planting, maintenance and survival assessments

3. Direct removal of carbon The Carbon Neutral Program: Specifically they: guarantee survival to be 70% to Year 5 of the planting by refill planting if necessary issue your event our "carbon neutral event" logo until the event has taken place place the event on their main homepage and on their carbon neutral events listing page of the website

The Carbon Neutral Program: Future Forests in the UK has an elaborate program CO 2 emissions are calculated online and a CarbonNeutral package recommendation is provided Celebrities are used extensively to promote the program 3. Direct removal of carbon

3. Direct removal of carbon The Carbon Neutral Program: Specifically your package contains: native trees planted in a location of your choice certificate with a personal dedication if you wish colour map and information about 'your' forest comes in a cream folder with a ribbon

3. Direct removal of carbon What would this program look like here? Some considerations: Partnership with TCF Where to plant What land is available? What to plant Will it grow well in this area? Under what conditions? Is it sustainable? What is the carbon sequestration potential? Does it require repeated planting or will it naturalize?

3. Direct removal of carbon Hybrid Poplar Other Hardwoods: Silver Maple, Sugar Maple, Bur Oak, White Birch and Black Walnut. Other species: Green Ash, White Ash, Tulip Poplar, Red Maple, Willow and Yellow Birch. Conifers: Norway Spruce, Tamarack, European Larch, Red Pine, White Pine, White Spruce, Red Spruce and Hemlock.

4. Production of pollutants Are trees harmful? Trees emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can react with other pollution to create ground level ozone (smog). However, reduced temperatures (increased tree canopy) make this reaction unfavourable

The benefits of trees Reduce air pollution Reduce the greenhouse effect Conserve water and reduce soil erosion Save energy Modify local climate Increase economic stability Increase property values Reduce noise pollution Add beauty Improve health Encourage community pride Increase plant/wildlife diversity

Conservation Halton s Trees for Watershed Health Program

Year Goal Total Estimated Budget ($) Trillium Contribution ($) trees and shrubs trees and shrubs ,300 trees and shrubs ,000 trees and shrubs

Program Benefits --Open to private and public sector --Opportunity to blend tree cover and clean air messaging --Increase tree cover --Fund smaller community and school groups --Hold a major tree planting event on Earth Day

He that plants trees loves others beside himself. Dr. Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732 British physician ( ) Thank you
