2 Sarah Lawrence allows undergraduates to enroll in small seminar courses at Reid Hall as well as the opportunity to attend classes at Paris premier educational institutions. Each course is complemented by weekly or bi-weekly conference work sessions, during which students work individually with professors, delving deeper into course material. The program also offers a wide range of visual and performing arts courses at various studios and conservatories in and around Paris. In selecting a study abroad program, would the area s history, geography, and architecture be your priority? Would prominence of the arts and richness of the culture be essential to you? Or would intellectual energy and opportunity be imperative? Study abroad with Sarah Lawrence, and you won t have to choose one over the other. Each of our international programs offers all of these assets plus a focus on individualized study and an emphasis on cultural immersion. Our small, selective programs offer distinctive features so vital to a Sarah Lawrence education: stimulating classes, one-on-one conferences and tutorials, and close interaction with distinguished scholars and artists at the cutting edge of their fields. This approach ensures fuller understanding, facilitates deeper research, and allows for the pursuit of original projects just as it does on the SLC campus in New York. So no matter where you decide to study, the Sarah Lawrence style of teaching and learning will make for an experience that is both highly personalized and immensely rewarding. 3 THEATRE PROGRAM (BADA) Located in the theatre capital of the world, this conservatory program for American undergraduates is run exclusively by the British American Drama Academy (BADA). The London Theatre Program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to work and study with leading actors and directors from the world of British theatre. Through a combination of classes, tutorials, master classes, and performances, students take part in the great theatrical tradition of Britain. Sarah Lawrence at Oxford has earned a reputation as one of the most rigorous and respected programs integrating American students into the life of this prestigious university. Members of the university, referred to as tutors, are assigned to teach two tutorials based on students respective backgrounds and experiences as well as their level of interest and expertise in the subject matter. Tutorials are the centerpiece of Oxford s educational experience, fostering dialogue, commitment, and engagement. Terms: Fall, Spring, Academic Year Housing: Flats Average Program Size: 45 Unique Features: Conservatory acting program for study of classical theatre in the British tradition. 4 One of the smallest programs in the city, Sarah Lawrence offers what is arguably the most genuine experience of living and learning in Florence. Students delve into seminars with Italian faculty, work with creative artists in their studios, study music in Florentine conservatories, take a class at the University of Florence, and live with Italian families. Sarah Lawrence offers a highly selective spring semester in Sicily s second-largest city. Undergraduates who have completed advanced intermediate Italian may study alongside native classmates in courses conducted entirely in Italian. A rich and in-depth exploration in Catania marries students academic pursuits in literature, history, and the arts with their daily life. Students return home not only as more advanced speakers of Italian, but also with a greater appreciation and understanding of Sicilian culture. Terms: Fall, Spring, Academic Year, Summer Housing: Homestay Language of Instruction: Seminars are conducted in English during the fall semester and summer. The majority of seminars are conducted in Italian during the spring semester. Unique Features: Small academic seminars One-on-one tutorials with faculty Studio classes in music and visual arts Art restoration Terms: Spring Housing: Homestay Language of Instruction: Italian Average Program Size: 5 Unique Features: All academic seminars are taught at the University of Catania. 5 This remarkable program introduces students to contemporary Cuba a mix of innovative ideas, weathered facades, lavish beauty, persistent history, artistic sensitivity, and genuine friendliness. As part of a select group, students learn firsthand how and why Cuban culture has shaped and reshaped both the regional and international landscapes. Peru s cultural and ecological diversity, varied and stunning landscapes, extraordinary people, and wealth of archeological and historical sites all contribute to an exceptional experience. The program s core course familiarizes students with Lima s cultural, historical, and social palimpsest through visits to sites where they can observe, in situ, 5,000 years of Peruvian development. Students also select three electives at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP). Sarah Lawrence College in Peru is designed for students with a high level of Spanish fluency. Terms: Fall, Spring Housing: Group Housing Language of Instruction: Spanish Unique Features: Students enroll in courses at the University of Havana in addition to a core course at the Centro de Estudios Demograficos. 6 SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA This program focuses on understanding and effectively addressing human development in Sub-Saharan African contexts. An integral component of the program is learning how to understand, implement, and evaluate effective community-based work in rural Tanzania (Kitongo, near Mwanza), urban Malawi (Blantyre), and rural Zimbabwe (the Matobo Hills region, near Bulawayo). In addition to course work in psychology and history, all students will spend hours a week performing fieldwork in local community-based organizations. Sarah Lawrence has partnered with the Alliance for Global Education to provide a language and cultural studies program with an emphasis in the social sciences and the visual arts. Through study, internships, and working directly with local artists, students see China in all its dimensions, providing an unparalleled opportunity to examine and understand a complex country and its culture. Terms: Spring Housing: Varied depending on location Language of Instruction: English Average Program Size: 10 Unique Features: Students spend approximately 5 weeks each in Tanzania, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. Terms: Fall, Spring, Academic Year Housing: Homestays Language of Instruction: English, Chinese Average Program Size: 12 Unique Features: Students work directly with artists in their studios. Possible internships with local agencies and companies. 8 STUDY ABROAD STUDY ABROAD 9

7 SUMMER PROGRAMS Sarah Lawrence offers opportunity for summer study abroad in a number of locations. Currently, we offer programs in: GERMANY GREECE/TURKEY ARGENTINA ITALY (New for Summer 2015) For more details on these programs, visit: International Programs 1 Mead Way, Bronxville, NY (914) One of the hallmarks of a Sarah Lawrence education is the understanding of different cultures, the deep transformational knowledge one attains living and working in different places. The College has always viewed the year abroad as part of our unique education, and our programs are designed to further our educational philosophy of learning actively rather than passively, through direct interaction and inquiry. In this way we push the limits of our understanding until we engage in a wider world. Jerrilynn Dodds, Dean of the College SLC /14
