Texts lend themselves t specific standards Chunk and excerpt texts fr depth, nt cverage Scaffld and backwards map twards the end-gal, making sure students are supprted thrughut Draft standards-aligned lessn assessment prmpts that aim t teach whle standards Integrate pprtunities fr Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Language thrughut * Yu may need t recnsider text chunking as necessary, and in sme cases, text selectin and juxtapsitin. Key Pints Start with the text and let standards emerge frm the text, while keeping an eye t the yearlng skills & standards trajectry. Determine what key skills need t be addressed in the unit as per the perfrmance assessment and yearlng skills & standards trajectry. e.g. In an argument writing unit, sme instructinal time will need t be devted t the prcess f building evidence-based arguments. Designers make chices abut which standards t fcus n; it s better t g deeper int fewer standards, than t apply the kitchen sink mdel Standards shuld build and spiral thrughut units and mdules (per December 2014 Page 8

9 yearlng skills & standards trajectry) When determining hw t chunk a text lessn by lessn, please keep in mind the fllwing principles: Students shuld clsely read small chunks f text each day. The gal is depth ver cverage. Think abut explring the richest passages in detail, as ppsed t trying t cver every line f a text. Essential text passages shuld be clsely read in class, while less essential sectins can be relegated t hmewrk r mitted entirely (depending n the apprpach). Lessn assessment prmpts prvide a clear gal and learning target fr each lessn and shuld be clsely aligned t the language f the standards. It s imprtant t try t teach whle standards where pssible, and certainly ver the curse f the mdule since ding s in every lessn is nt always pssible. (e.g. RI early n in a text, students will nt be able t determine hw a central idea develps ver the curse f the text. They will, hwever, be able t determine hw it emerges and it shaped and refined by specific details.) In sme cases, it may be necessary t recnsider central text text selectin r add additinal texts t supplement and rund ut instructin. Red flags t watch ut fr: if a text desn t have enugh meat t lend itself t specific standards, recnsider text selectin. If skills trajectry calls fr specific skills that a text desn t lend itself well t, cnsider supplementing with additinal texts. 12 Sectin: Putting it tgether: Beginning an assessment map In this sectin, yu will begin t create an assessment map using a sample text. Materials used include: Sessin PwerPint, Mdule Assessment Map Template 8 30 min Ttal time: 30 min Participants practice creating their wn assessment maps using the Mdule Assessment Map Template and the sample text, Of Mice and Men. 1. Start by identifying which standards yu want t assess students n in the End-f-Unit Assessment. Try and limit EOU assessment t tw standards Make sure these standards are verly-represented in unit Dn t wrry abut crafting the EOU assessment prmpt 2. Integrate pprtunities fr Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Language int the map 3. Wrk n chunking and assessments fr lessns 1-3 Remind participants t have the standards, and text ut at all times.
