May 2015 STAY CONNECTED: Message from The President & CEO We are very excited to be offering our first Future Ready Leadership for Women. The program is very similar to our award winning Future Ready Leadership program with some content and case studies designed specifically to meet women's needs. At a recent networking event, we heard women speaking about the challenges they face in the workplace and how that glass ceiling still exists. In fact, a recent OECD study found that women in Canada earn 33 per cent less than men. Catalyst, a non profit organization with a mission to expand opportunities for women and business, recently found that women hold only 20 per cent of board seats at Canadian stock index companies. Even closer to home, was the Women & Diversity EXCLerator Project, a 2014 study supported by YWCA, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and McMaster University. It showed an overview of women's representation in senior leadership positions in Hamilton and Halton across nine sectors, including elected office, education boards, health boards, corporate boards and union leaders. The study found women held an average of 36 per cent of leadership positions. Dianne Jones, Business Development Office at Mohawk College Enterprise (MCE) also points out that women are often the ones who shoulder most of the home and family responsibilities. "They have unique needs and challenges that men just don't have," she says. "As well, when women are assertive, they are often seen as being aggressive. It is seen as a negative." "For all of these reasons, we wanted to have a unique program for women that will give them the 1/5

2 skills to communicate assertively, take charge of their careers and provide some tips on how to manage home and work." Future Ready Leadership for Women is a series of customized leadership training sessions held one day each month, over eight months. This program helps to develop and shape emerging leaders by providing theory with practical application, team building and insight into the minds of established leaders. It will cover the same topics as our popular Future Ready Leadership program, including communications, leadership challenges, leading change, coaching, managing performance, the power of teams and leadership dynamics. But within these sessions, we will address issues, including the role gender plays in teams and which leadership skills come naturally and which are difficult for female leaders. We have already had many people tell us how beneficial they think this program will be. And while we are excited to provide it, we hope women will soon be recognized for their leadership strengths and have the same opportunities as men. In other words, we hope there will be a day when we won't need to continue to offer this program. Audie McCarthy President & CEO, Mohawk College Enterprise P.S. Here are the 5 tips for women to become effective leaders: Be your own cheerleader Women are often less likely to champion themselves. If you don't, who else will? Negotiate your salary, request more important assignments or ask for a promotion. Speak up to negotiate time commitments and ask for collaboration on projects. Find a mentor Find a leader you admire and observe their traits, how they interact within a team and work under pressure. Consider finding a mentor so you can work together to develop your leadership skills. Be yourself It has been suggested that women should play up "male" traits like assertiveness, independence and ambition more than being supportive and nurturing. Sometimes being accessible, collaborative and a good communicator is just as desirable. Capitalize on your advantages and create an environment that supports your team. Build a team Build a support team outside of work. Turn to your spouse or partner for help and quality time. Rely on good friends to confide in and for a good laugh. Hire a babysitter or cleaning service to help ease your load. Offer a hand to other women True leaders mentor others. Share your experience and influence to help other women into leadership roles. 4/5
