2 Ohio Assessment History *1987 Requirement for students to pass proficiency tests in order to graduate from high school. It required anyone graduating in 1994 or thereafter to pass ninth grade proficiency tests in reading, writing, mathematics, and citizenship. * Twelfth grade proficiency tests in the same 4 areas that students would be required to pass to earn either the Diploma with Distinction or Diploma with Commendation. * 1992 Proficiency tests in the same four areas at fourth and sixth grades beginning , science to be added for fourth grade * Year students take ninth and twelfth grade proficiency tests twice, October and March. If not successful, district provides summer school or receive certificate of attendance. * 1994 Ninth grade proficiency test can be taken in March of 8 th grade year. * Emergency rule to provide accommodations for ELL students. * Delayed 2 years the requirement to pass ninth grade proficiency in order to graduate. * 1994 Exempted students on IEPs.

3 Ohio Assessment History * Ninth grade test phasing to a tenth grade test for graduation graduating class would be the first class to take the test. * Fourth grade Guarantee Fourth grader must pass reading or be retained. If fourth or sixth grades students failed three or more proficiency tests they should be retained. * NCLB Elementary and Secondary Education Act Must have assessments, report cards, and teacher qualifications All students will be on grade level by * OAT * OGT replaced the ninth grade test * OAT revised and renamed OAA

5 Testing Dates The testing dates are below. The Next Generation Assessments are in the spring. The Ohio Graduation Tests are in the fall and the spring, with an optional administration in the summer. The Ohio Achievement Assessment grade 3, reading only, is in the fall and spring. The Next Generation Assessments replace grade 3 math and grades 4-8 Ohio Achievement Assessments. The Ohio Test of English Language Acquisition and the Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities are in the spring. Next Generation Assessments Math and English Language Arts for Grades 3-8 and High School Performance Based Assessment: Feb. 16 through March 20, 2015 End of Course Exam: April 13 through May 15, 2015 Science (Grades 5, 8 and High School), Social Studies (Grades 4, 6 and High School) Performance Based Assessment: March 2 through March 13, 2015 End of Course Exam: May 4 through May 15, 2015

7 What does this all mean? There is going to be a transition period and it is going to be messy. Example: Sophomores in will have the fall college and career readiness test (1 day-ish, right?), OTES student growth measures (2 days for pre- and post- tests), OGTs (5 days), PARCC Math (3 days in March, 2 in May), PARCC English (3 days in March, 2 in May), Physical Science or Bio (1 day), US History or Government (1 day, potentially). 3 years of 16 days of testing.
