1 INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING WITH ERIC MARCH MATERIALS LIST A note on oil painting materials: Starting out with oil painting can be a pretty big investment and your first trip to the art store to get everything can be intimidating. On the first day of class we will be discussing this list and what everything is used for and why it s important. I ve indicated with an asterisk * what will be needed on the first day. *Palette At least 10 x 15 Wood or glass (Plate glass palette should have a grey backing board.) Disposable wax paper palettes can also be used-the gray ones are preferable. *Palette knife (a couple different shapes are helpful to have at least one trowel shape although the other shape in the image below is very handy for one of the first exercises we will be doing.) 2 small metal cups for clean mineral spirits and medium Brush cleaning jar- either Silicoil or, preferably, stainless steel sealable brush washer *Turpenoid for cleaning brushes (odorless turpentine in the blue can not Natural Turpenoid) *Paper Towels (Viva or Bounty work best) Medium (1 part Linseed Stand oil mixed with 3-4 parts Turpenoid) Vine charcoal (not charcoal pencils) Vine charcoal sharpener (I find a regular corn-remover with coarse and fine sides can work well as a charcoal sharpener. You can get this at a drug store.) Plumb line Straight knitting needle or stick (for measuring) Sketchbook Spring Clamps (to hold canvas on the easel)

2 Brushes: - Filbert Bristle brushes -Sizes: 1, 2, 4, 6, 10 (at least 2 each of 1-4) -Badger Hair Fan Brushes size 4 & 6 -A couple of round nylon sable brushes can also be useful for detail work: -Utrecht Round White Nylon Sable 6, 12 (these will need to be replaced often if used a lot) A can or stand for holding brushes (heavier cans are better so they don t tip over. Coffee cans work alright.) PAINT: When buying paint make sure to buy the artist grade paints, not the student grade paints. Student grade may be cheaper in the short run but not economical over the long run and can be more difficult to use. White *Lead white (this is the white I use most often the Cremnitz variety) Titanium white (for folks who aren t a big fan of lead) High Chroma Warms Cadmium Lemon Cadmium Yellow Deep or Medium Cadmium Orange *Cadmium Red Alizarin Crimson or Quinocridone Magenta Earth Colors Naples Yellow *Yellow Ochre Pale Raw Sienna Venetian Red Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber Terre Verte High Chroma Cools Veridian Cerulean Blue *Cobalt Blue Phthalo Blue Green Ultramarine Blue Black *Ivory Black

3 PAINTING SUPPORTS: A good support is really the foundation of a good painting. It can make your painting a joy with great flow or fight you every step of the way. There are many different materials that are suitable for oil painting. Many artists develop a taste for certain kinds of surfaces, but some general qualities to look for in a painting support include: -archival construction and materials -Not prone to warping or cracking -Slightly absorbent but not too dry -If working in oils the surface should have an oil prime although acrylic-primed surfaces can also work. -Textile supports (canvas or linen) should have an even weave and not too many knots or bumps -Textile supports shouldn t be so thin that it s easy to see pin pricks of light through it. -Textile supports should be stretched well so there are not waves or buckles in the canvas. For this class, you can start with: *(2) 12 x 16 Canvas Boards (2) 9 x 12 Canvas Boards Some students may need more boards. They re very affordable so I would buy a couple extra just in case. Some other surfaces to try (from nicest to most affordable): Canvas or linen artist primed with 2 thin layers of rabbit skin glue and 2 layers of oil prime stretched on wooden stretcher bars. Pre-primed linen and canvas can be purchased in lengths from the art store. This can then be stretched on wooden stretcher bars. Paper or archival matte board sealed with 2 coats of shellac cut 50/50 with denatured alcohol (let dry between coats.) Good quality plywood or masonite sealed with shellac or with rabbit skin glue. These boards can also be primed with oil or gesso after the rabbit skin glue. Store-bought pre-stretched primed linen or canvas in standard sizes (not the best stuff, usually, but will do in a pinch. Some brands are better than others.) Some notes regarding the National Academy School of Fine Arts: -The school provides desks, sinks, soap and storage racks. Bring a padlock if you wish to rent a locker ($8 per month no cash, please, Visa/MasterCard or Personal Checks accepted.) -Use of fixative is not allowed in the school or anywhere near the school property.

Later on, you may want to make a permanent palette with a large piece of plate glass (ideally, painting the reverse side white). - Different surfaces to paint on will be discussed. Canvas boards are fine to begin with - get a variety of sizes, but nothing smaller than 14 inches on a side. If you are interested in stretching and priming your own canvases, the materials needed for this (stretchers, canvas, rabbit skin glue, oil primer, etc.) will be discussed in class to inform purchases. - Recommended: a box for organizing paint and supplies (a tool box, tackle box, etc.) - oil paint is recommended for this class. Utrecht paint is as good and affordable a brand as any. Winsor Newton and Rembrandt are good too, although more expensive. Williamsburg and Old Holland are excellent brands but can be quite expensive. Avoid the WINTON line, (particularly bad student grade), of Winsor Newton paint. Below is a list of recommended colors. Other colors can always be added if you wish. Depending on your level of interest in painting, large tubes ( ml) may be more economical. For the whites, please get large tubes. When buying paint, check the back of each tube to make sure that it contains only one type of pigment. Pigments are sometimes only designated by their Colour Index International Generic Names": these are internationally-recognized letter-and-number codes. For instance, PY1 is a yellow pigment, variously referred to as permanent yellow, hansa yellow, arylide yellow, etc.

10 ABSTRACT PAINTING & PROCESS WITH CATHY CHOI Charcoals & Pencils Charcoal willow/vines --an assortment (as they are soft, they go very quickly) Charcoal Pencils of varying densities and hardness Powdered Charcoal ---(Sold at Utrecht: "General Pencil General's Pure Powdered Charcoal" 6 oz. Jar) Gummy eraser White drawing paper pad, 18 x 24 in. Charcoal paper, inexpensive brown pad PAINTING IN ACRYLICS Acrylic Paints (Golden, Liquitex - higher quality, Utrecht) Depending on your budget, it is your choice as to the brand you choose. Since we are emphasizing experimentation, a less expensive brand like Utrecht is fine. If you choose a higher grade acrylic, I recommend Golden Brand. Golden Fluid Acrylics are highly intense, permanent acrylic colors with a consistency similar to heavy cream. Produced from lightfast pigments, not dyes, they offer very strong colors with very thin consistencies, and contain no fillers or extenders. Golden Fluid Acrylics are ideal for spraying, brushing, and staining. Viscosity refers to the consistency or thickness of the paint. Heavy body acrylics have a thick, buttery consistency which retains brushstrokes and facilitates color mixing and blending. Fluid acrylics are thinner (but contain the same pigment concentration) and are suited to detail work, staining, watercolor techniques, and dry-brush work. Colors This is a basic color list and you may bring less or more if you like. Mixing of colors will also produce a wide range of hues and colors. Titanium White Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue Cadmium Orange Cadmium Red Medium Alizarin Crimson Phthalo Green Cobalt Blue Dioxazine Purple Burnt Sienna Ivory Black Acrylic Gel Retarder (increases workable air time), optional --You can also use water but, this will make the acrylic more like watercolor, if so desired

Please find provided below materials lists should you decide to paint in pastels or oils. PASTEL Gray PastelBord made by Ampersand (No larger than 11 x 14) **Preferred Pastel surface Or Gray Canson Paper Single Sheets Hard Pastel set - Nupastel, is decent these are good for blocking in. A Skin tone set Rembrandt makes good ones. Dark Pastel Sticks Girault makes dark pastel sets, you can also buy the sticks individually. The following: Pastel pencils- Derwent Burnt Umber, Black, Burnt Sienna, White Rembrandt: A range of Blues, Greens, and Reds. Add a few Sennelier pastel sticks to you collection. You can buy these individually. These are very soft. They are meant to be used last. A soft nylon fan brush. Paper Towels OIL Painting Brushes: The Silver Grand Prix series and the Windsor & Newton Lexington II are very good Bristle brushes. Buy various shapes and sizes (#2,4,6,8) (especially filberts and flats). Also include synthetic brushes, especially rounds (Winsor & Newton -- Galeria are nice synthetic brushes - A round size 2 in this brand would be nice). Include in your collection a size #2 sable fan brush and a #0 or #1 sized round brush for detail. Holbein series palette knives are also excellent for bold paint strokes. Also a synthetic house painters brush works well for large areas (you can get these at Home Depot)

13 Medium: Choose one: 1. Liquin or 2. Alkyd medium (made by various companies, choose one) Galkyd or Galkyd Lite works Or 3. Then use this mixture and break it down again by adding 50% Odorless Mineral Spirits (or Turpenoid), to paint with. And a small bottle of Odorless Mineral Spirits Paints: Williamsburg or Vasari makes good oil paints. Other choices include, Winsor & Newton, or Holbein. Arrange colors in this order on palette (the colors with the asterisk in front are optional, but nice to have on your palette): Titanium White *Brilliant Yellow light Naples Yellow Cadmium Yellow Cadmium Orange Cadmium red light Yellow Ochre *Raw Sienna *Transparent Red Oxide Burnt Sienna Venetian Red Alizarin Crimson Ultramarine Blue *Prussian Blue *King Blue or a Light Blue Cadmium Green Light Viridian Burnt Umber Ivory Black Don t forget to bring paper towels (Viva is the best Brand). ****Tone your canvas or board (masonite with acrylic gesso primed) with either a Gray or Burnt Sienna Some notes regarding the National Academy School of Fine Arts: -Instructors attend full time classes two days per week to give instruction. 16 -Use of fixative is not allowed in the school or anywhere near the school property, including the sidewalks and park.

17 Beginning Painting with Henry Finkelstein, NA - some soft vine charcoal, (not compressed). 12 sticks. - some paper you might want to sketch on first, Canson Sketch is good, or whatever you may be using for your drawing classes, and any other materials you like to draw with: pencils, pens, etc. - at least 12, (or more eventually), bristle oil painting brushes, (not sable, nylon, or watercolor brushes). Get a variety of shapes between rounds, flats, and filberts, and sizes from #4 to #12. - cotton rags, (not paper towels, will explain in class). -a palette knife, the ideal shape will be explained in class, "Che Son" brand #867 is one example. - a large, 18 x 24" or more, palette. The larger the palette, the better your chances for color mixing. To start out disposable paper palettes will do. Later on those who wish may want to make a permanent palette out of a large piece of plate glass and paint one side of it white. This makes the nicest palette. - different surfaces to paint on will be discussed. Experienced painters should use any surfaces they are used to using. For those starting out an inexpensive option could be Canson or Strathmore brand Canvas Paper. Other brands of Canvas Paper are of poor quality and not recommended. Prepared canvas panels are not recommended either. - in Beginning Painting there will be some stretching of canvases, gesso priming, and oil priming. The materials needed for this such as stretchers, canvas, gesso, a gesso brush, and oil priming white will be explained in class before students consider which options they wish to consider purchasing. - a tool box, tackle box, or the like, for organizing your tubes of paint and brushes, etc. Take some time looking for the right thing. It is important that you start out with your colors organized in a way that you can remember. The list I give below orders the colors into 3 groups: Yellows to Reds, Earths to Violets, and Blues to Greens. Hence three compartments for tubes would be ideal. Art Bin makes a nice one, or any other that appeals to you. - oil paint is recommended. If you prefer to use acrylic, of course you may. The differences between oil and acrylic paint will be discussed. Please think about this before you decide. Utrecht paint is as good and affordable a brand as any. Winsor Newton and Rembrandt are good too, although more expensive. Williamsburg paint is very good, and some of the colors are surprisingly reasonable. Check the price for a color in a particular brand before you buy it. Old Holland is the best but can be prohibitively expensive. Students may wish to experiment with some of the cheaper colors made by Old Holland, but this is by no means required. Avoid the WINTON line, (student grade), of Winsor Newton paint.

18 Below is a list of required colors. Other colors can always be added if you wish, but avoid Pthalos, Thalo Blue or Green. They are too intense and difficult to use, (to be explained). Sometimes these are marketed with the brand as the color name such as Winsor Blue or Rembrandt Green, etc. Also for Rose Madder, do not get Rose Madder Genuine made by Winsor Newton, (or anyone else). This color is way too expensive and, I any event, will not suit the task at hand. Just get ordinary Rose Madder. All of these colors will be discussed in class. Please ask questions and take notes. It s fun! 1 large tube of White, ml. colors in 37 ml tubes: Yellows Reds:: Lemon Yellow of some kind, Cadmium Yellow Light or Medium, Cadmium Red Light or Scarlet, Rose Madder, (not genuine) or Alizarin Crimson. Earths Violets: Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, Mars Orange, (or some other opaque earth red such as light red, but Williamsburg paints is still making Mars Orange), (optional: Mars Violet, Manganese Violet), Dioxazine Purple or Winsor Violet. Blues Greens:: Cobalt Blue, Manganese Blue or Cerulean Blue, (in this case Manganese or Cerulean Blue Hue are cheaper and acceptable), Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green, (not Viridian Green Hue which is Thalo), (optional: Chromium Oxide Green), Ivory Black. For those getting oil paint: - one pint of Artist's grade Linseed Oil. Utrecht is the cheapest and of fine quality. - one quart, of Gamsol odorless solvent or equivalent, but not the natural, (green can), variety of Turpenoid. When it comes to the solvent you will probably need more than a quart eventually, and ones like Gamsol are considerably cheaper by the gallon. Consider chipping in with someone on a gallon. Do not purchase pints of solvent as they are way too expensive, and you will need more than a pint on the first day. - a large wide mouthed 1 qt. jar such as a pickle jar or mayonnaise jar, and some cheap Vegetable or Motor Oil to clean the brushes. - a separate smaller 4 oz. +/-, wide mouthed jar, such as a baby food jar or a mustard jar for medium. Note: This is a lot of stuff and it can be overwhelming getting started with painting materials if you haven't painted before. I am here to try to make things as simple and easy for you as possible. Please pay close attention as we discuss the supplies the first day, and ask lots of questions. Some notes regarding the National Academy School of Fine Arts: -Instructors attend full time classes two days per week to give instruction. The instructor is present one day per week for classes that meet three times or less per week. -The school provides desks, sinks, soap and storage racks. Bring a padlock if you wish to rent a locker ($5 or $10 per month no cash, please, Visa/MasterCard or Personal Checks accepted.)

23 WORKING FROM THE MASTERS WITH STANLEY LEWIS, NA Students should bring materials they are already comfortable with for both sessions. Medium size drawing pads Drawing pencils or charcoal are recommended for the morning. For the afternoon, the sky is the limit.

24 National Academy School of Fine Art 5 East 89 th Street, New York, NY Phone Fax The Art of the Portrait with Michele LiCalsi Thursday evenings, 7:00-10:00 p.m. Interpreting the essence of an individual is one of the most rewarding aspects of portrait painting. In this course, students will be given the technical and interpretative tools that will allow them to grow and achieve artistic success in the field of portraiture. Technical topics will include posing the model, choosing a background, props and clothing, lighting the subject, composing the image and the importance of gesture. Interpretative techniques will include creating a likeness, the expressive use of color and the use of abstract elements within a representational image. Throughout the course a variety of oil painting techniques will be taught, reviewed and critiqued. Students will develop a strong technical and creative foundation for further work and a clear understanding of where they fit within the history of portrait painting. Materials List *Students should bring vine charcoal, a canvas (or comparable painting support) and painting supplies to the first day of class ** Supplies are suggested and can be substituted with comparable items. 26 COPYING FROM AMERICAN MASTERS AT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY MUSEUM WITH ERIC MARCH MATERIALS LIST Copying from original master works not only provides insight into the graphic and color choices of the masters, but also invites an investigation into their materials and processes. Students are encouraged to research the techniques of the artists they are copying and much can be gained from the attempt to recreate the process as well as the final image of a piece. However, there is still a lot to be learned from copying even if a student uses a process and materials that are different from the one used to create the original piece. Indeed, the masters' techniques are often not known with certainty and may be difficult to reproduce regardless given the structure of the class. This should not be a barrier to discovering what can be learned from the careful observation of the finished piece. The kit for painting at the NAM is essentially the same that you would use for any painting class. The only difference may be that your kit must be easily transported, easily controlled, compact, and sealable so paint and oil does not spill onto the floor, the work, or other people as you carry it through the galleries. No materials can be left in the museum from week to week. A portable easel Drop Cloth (required) - I recommend a canvas drop cloth large enough to cover an area larger than the footprint of a french easel. A plastic sheet can be too slippery. Slip-resistant drop cloths are a good idea: Painting Surface: You are welcome to use a panel, canvas, or linen. I recommend students try to match the same surface material and texture as the original they choose to copy. Canvases must not exceed 30" x 30" and must differ from the dimensions of the original by at least 10 percent. Brushes: a variety of soft and bristle brushes. I recommend Robert Simmons bristle brushes (Filbert shape) for most of the painting work, sizes 1, 2,3, 5, 10. Small soft synthetic rounds can be useful if your painting has a lot of small detail work. Paper Towels or rags and a trash bag for soiled rags Sealable brush washing jar (either a Silicoil jar or even better are the reusable steel brush washer jars with clamp-tight lids.) Odorless Turpenoid can be stored in these jars and simply re-used week after week. Palette wood or glass. If you choose a wood palette, make sure to seal it with linseed oil a couple of times before using it for painting. Put some oil on the palette, rub it into the wood, and then wipe it off. Let it dry and then do it again a couple days later. This helps prevent the wood palette from sucking all the oil out of your paint. You may find a sealable lidded plastic palette holder useful for transporting a palette with paint on it. Sealable medium and mineral spirit jars Odorless Turpenoid should be used (in the blue can, not the Natural kind in the green can.) Bag and/or luggage cart for transporting all your materials Paint:

27 The 19 th century saw a huge shift in the number of colors available to artists, particularly from the 1880 s onward. The most striking evidence of this is the colorful palette of the Impressionists when compared to their earlier academic peers. When choosing colors for your palette keep this in mind. Often just by looking at a painting you can get a pretty good idea if the artist was using newer, more modern colors or if he or she was sticking to a more traditional value-based palette. I would suggest starting off with a fairly conservative palette (unless it s strikingly obvious there is a more modern pigment being used) and add other colors if you need them. The more recent synthetic pigments that were just coming onto the market in the mid to late 1800 s include cadmiums, cerulean, cobalt blue, Prussian blue, chromes, and viridian. White: Lead white, Zinc white, or Titanium white Yellows, Oranges, and Browns: Naples Yellow Yellow Ochre Indian Yellow Raw Sienna Burnt Sienna Raw Umber Burnt Umber Van Dyck Brown More modern colors: Cadmium Lemon, Cad Yellow Medium, Cad. Orange Reds: Venetian Red Alizarin Crimson Vermillion More modern colors: Cadmium Red Greens, Blues, and Purples: Green earth (Terre Verte) Ultramarine Blue More modern colors: Viridian, Sap Green, Cerulean blue, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Blue Black: Ivory Black / Bone Black / Mars Black
