2 ABSTRACT India is a country where you can witness a unique blend of innumerable cultures and traditions. Indian culture stands not only for a traditional social code but also for a spiritual foundation of life. Music, the first of the fine arts, is a highly expressive art form. An effective medium for the expression of complex emotions. The character and practical aim of the Indian music are backed by a very long wonderful history. xhra okè;e~ rfkk u`r;e~ =k;e laxhre~ eqp;rsaa Sangeet Ratnakar (Sharang Dev) The pre, independence era was a period when classical musicians were patronized by the princely states of India. Slowly instruments were used to accompany the religious songs, on ceremonies, occasions etc. with the passage of time instruments has not taken the status of an independent performing art but also taken a leading place in its own form, which is a remarkable transformation over the years. Indian classical instrumental music has had an increasing populace of followers in the west Interaction between Indian and Western music can be traced back to the 18 th century. Indian instrumental music brought the

3 people of various countries closer to each other and made them conscious of the great similarities in their moods, cultural heritage, joys, sorrows and aspiration. Ustad Shamusuddin Khan (Siar and Surbahar) of Jaipur Gharana first visited to western countries in There in 1911, Hazarat Inayat Hussain Khan travelled to United States. In 1931, Baba Allauddin Khan was travelled with Uday Shankar s dance troupe as a top musician and advisor to Europe. This visit of Ustad Allauddin Khan, open up the presentation of various Indian instruments. After independence in 1951 Ustad Villayat Khan was the first Indian musician to play in England. In 1955, 1956 respectively Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pt. Ravi Shankar travelled to Unites States. By the mid 1960s they both have became a symbol if the bridge between tradition and change in Indian music and no Indian musicians has ever had such a lasting impact in the west before or since. Inter cultural activities and Indian musical performance are not only the factors for globalization of Indian classical music but many international institutes and universities, many foreign personalities and foreign authors, governmental & non govenrmental agencies, media are helped to promote Indian classical music world wide.

4 The future of instrumental music took very bright for India in coming year and is sure to became more popular. I have divided my research work into four chapters: Chapter One, deals with introduction, defination of music, history of Indian classical music, history of Indian instruments, Globalization of Indian Music & Culture, Attraction of Westerns toward Indian classical music journey to the west. Chapter Two, covers the importance of instrumental music, description of some popular Hindustani classical instruments established abroad, and contribution in acquainting and popularizing Indian instrumental music at international level through some of our legengs. Chapter Three, has focused on role of various institutes established abroad to promote Indian classical music, role of some foreign authors to promote Indian classical music and the research work done on Indian classical music in foreign universities. The Chapter Four, is about role of concern governmental and nongovernmental agencies to promote Indian classical music world-wide. Then the conclusion is given to highlight the research work and its special features.

5 Annexure I covers the name of Indian artists performing at international level has been given. I will be apologize to those artists whom I left. Annexure II cover, name of Indian artists presented by ICCR at international level has been given and the list of outgoing delegations by ICCR for the month of 2009 to Annexure III covers, name of government aided institutes for Indian Music abroad.
