3 1 INTRODUCTION The integratin f Bring Yur Own Device (BYOD) and supprting infrmatin technlgy equipment int the classrm represents an exciting era at Duncraig Senir High Schl. The BYOD prject prvides a wealth f rich educatinal resurces and tls, that when used effectively, can deliver very psitive teaching and learning utcmes. Hwever, if the implementatin f this new technlgy is nt prperly cntrlled there are certain pitfalls that students may encunter. Duncraig SHS supprts students in the apprpriate and safe use f their BYODs. By alerting parents and students t ptential dangers, develping guidelines and prviding advice and supprt, the expsure f students t ptential prblems can be minimised. This dcument is specifically aimed at parents and students wh are invlved in the Duncraig Senir High Schl Bring Yur Own Device Prject and details the plicy, guidelines and supprt strategies t ensure that students are able t make effective use f their BYOD and avid any prblems. 2 DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The bjective f the BYOD prject is t implement a range f innvatins that explre and explit the latest in educatinal technlgy in a sustainable prgram. Duncraig sees the value f ne t ne cmputer devices in teaching and learning and wuld like t have it available t all student. BYOD will link t a campus wide wireless netwrk prviding access t the internet and curriculum materials as well as enabling cmmunicatin between students and teachers. Teachers have been issued with their wn device and have participated in a range f prfessinal learning prgrams t develp teaching and learning strategies t value add using the device. Students engagement and prductivity is enhanced with their wn BYOD as many f their learning resurces are n the device and imprved cmmunicatin with their teachers with the ability t electrnically cnnect t them at any time. We request parents supply a device that cmplies with the fllwing specificatins: Apple device with at least - 10 inch screen, 10 hur battery life and running OSX 10.8 r abve r IOS 6.4 r abve OR Windws 8 device with at least - 10 inch screen, 10 hur battery life and running versin 8.1 r Windws 8 RT r abve. 4 There is a wide range f devices n the market (It will be yur chice which mdel yu chse as lng as it cmplies with the specificatins abve). DSHS is ffering a range f devices in a bundle including supprt, cver and App credit thrugh Winthrp Cmputing There is als the ptin t purchase insurance with the device r lease a device ver 2 r 3 years with insurance included. These ptins will be at extra cst. There is n bligatin t purchase the device thrugh Winthrp. Yu may already wn ne r prefer t rganize yur wn thrugh anther vendr. Nte: if yur child has their wn device they will be able t bring that at their wn risk. We wuld recmmend persnal insurance. Parents entering this prgram may be eligible fr the Schlkids Bnus. Fr cmplete details, please refer t the fllwing link: bnus. Students unable t affrd a device will have access at schl thrugh devices kept in the library. Duncraig will be imprving cmmunicatin with parents by pening a parent prtal. Our web prtal will give yu access t infrmatin whenever yu want, n any device yu are using. Yu can view yur child's assessment requirements, attendance, schl ntices and a wealth f ther imprtant infrmatin. 3 RESPONSIBILITIES 3.1 The Rle f Students Students must use their BYOD and the schl cmputer netwrk respnsibly. Cmmunicatins n infrmatin netwrks are ften public and general schl rules fr student behaviur, cnduct and standards will apply. When using their BYOD and accessing schl infrmatin resurces students must fllw the plicy and guidelines detailed in this dcument. Students wh fail t hnur this Cde f Cnduct may frfeit use f their BYOD and access t the Internet and/r schl netwrk. 3.2 The Rle f Parents r Guardians Parents r guardians are required t take respnsibility fr cnveying the imprtance f the plicy guidelines in this dcument and ther schl plicies t their children. They are als required t mnitr their child s use f the BYOD, especially at hme, including access t media and infrmatin surces. 3.3 The Rle f Teaching Staff Schl teaching staff will mnitr apprpriate care f the BYOD and its use in accessing curriculum infrmatin. They will als prvide guidance and instructin t students in the apprpriate use f such resurces. This includes staff facilitating student access t infrmatin n their BYOD in supprt f and t enrich the curriculum while taking int accunt the varied instructinal needs, learning styles, abilities and develpmental levels f students. 3.4 The Rle f the Schl The schl cmmits t uphlding the Usage Plicy Guidelines and prviding physical and financial resurces t enable safe, educatinally relevant access t the BYOD and relevant curriculum facilities fr staff and students. The schl als has a respnsibility t ratify infrmatin published n the internet by students r the schl, under the schl s name, meets legal requirements and cmmunity standards in relatin t cpyright and safety. 4

5 4 AUTHORISATION AND RULES FOR HOME USE Students will be expected t bring their BYOD t schl t use in class. This will be subject t apprval by Parents/Guardians as indicated n the Schl Usage Permissin Letter and als by student cmpliance with the usage cnditins utlined in this dcument. Schl usage will be granted subject t adherence t the fllwing rules: 1. Students must bring their BYOD t schl each day. It must be fully charged. 2. The Students must have their BYOD inside their prtective cver and inside their schl bag when travelling t and frm schl. 3. Students are respnsible fr the safe strage and care f their BYOD AT ALL TIMES. Fr example BYODs shuld nt be left utside classrms r the library. 4. When the BYOD is at schl the schl Netwrk Agreement applies at all times. Since schl use brings with it a risk f accidental damage r theft f the BYOD we expect parents t arrange insurance. If an insurance claim is partially r whlly rejected by the insurer due t nn- cmpliance with the guidelines the schl will nt cver the cst assciated with the lss r damage. 5 GUIDELINES FOR PROPER CARE OF BYOD 5.1 Security and Strage When the BYOD is at schl, students must knw the lcatin f their BYOD at all times and are respnsible fr ensuring its safe keeping. When the cmputer is nt required in class, fr example during Physical Educatin, it is t be placed in the secure strage prvided. BYODs must als be under the student s direct care during recess and lunchtime. When the BYOD is being used away frm schl, students shuld avid leaving it unattended r where it is visible t the public (eg in a vehicle). In these circumstances, the BYOD can becme a target fr theft. 5.2 Transprt and Handling Prcedures When transprting the BYOD, students are t make sure that it is in the cver and in their schl bag which must be securely clsed. Students must carry their BYOD inside the cver and place this inside their schl bag when leaving the schl. Students must never remve the BYOD frm its cver and place it directly int their schl bag. 5.3 Occupatinal Health and Safety Guidelines The basic health and safety guidelines fr desktp cmputers als apply t BYODs use: Keep the upper arms relaxed at the side f the bdy Bend the elbws t arund 90 degrees Keep the wrists straight Change psitin every minutes and take a cmplete break t get up and mve yur bdy every minutes. Students with special needs will be catered fr accrding t Department f Educatin guidelines. 5

6 5.4 General Care f the BYOD It is the student s respnsibility t maintain the BYOD in gd cnditin. 5.5 Reprt f Lss r Damage In circumstances where deliberate damage r theft has ccurred, it is the student s respnsibility t reprt t the Plice. 6 DATA MANAGEMENT Saving r back- up f data is the student s respnsibility. T backup wrk it is recmmend that students use clud strage, purchase a USB flash drive r preferably, an external hard drive. Staff will nt accept data lss as an excuse fr nt handing in wrk n time. 7 PRINTING Wherever pssible we are cmmitted t delivering and receiving electrnic frms f class wrk and assessment. Students must endeavur t prduce and submit wrk and assessments electrnically. Students unable t submit wrk electrnically will be encuraged t print wrk at hme fr submissin t their teacher. Students shuld minimise printing at all times by print- previewing, editing n screen rather than n printuts and spell- checking befre printing. Students will have limited access t netwrk printers. Printing will be supervised by the teacher in charge f the learning area in which the student wishes t print materials. Students must arrange fr this t be cnducted during class time r at anther time cnvenient fr the classrm teacher. 8 VIRUS PROTECTION The BYODs shuld be cnfigured with anti- virus sftware which regularly and autmatically checks fr viruses n the device. On the detectin f a virus r the suspicin f a viral infectin, the student must infrm the Netwrk Administratr, Mr Jhn Cregan. 9 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICIES Any Acceptable Use Plicy is a written agreement that frmally sets ut the rules f use f sftware, netwrks, printers and the Internet. All staff and students are accessing the Department f Educatin System and are bund by Department f Educatin rules f use. Cmputer perating systems and ther sftware have been set up t maximise the effectiveness f the BYOD. Students are prhibited frm: Bringing r dwnlading unauthrised prgrams, including games, t the schl r running them n schl cmputers. Online internet games are banned. Accessing scial media sites eg. Facebk at schl is banned. Deleting, adding r altering any cnfiguratin files. Breaking sftware cpyright. Cpyright is t be bserved at all times. It is illegal t cpy r distribute schl sftware. Illegal sftware frm ther surces is nt t be cpied t r installed n the schl equipment. Deliberately intrducing any virus r prgram that reduces system security r effectiveness. Attempting t lg int the netwrk with any user name r passwrd that is nt their wn, r change any ther persn s passwrd. 6

7 Revealing their netwrk passwrd t anyne except the netwrk administratr. Students are respnsible fr everything dne using their accunts and everything n their BYOD. Since passwrds must be kept secret, n user may claim that anther persn entered their hme directry and did anything t cause schl rules t be brken. Using r pssessing any prgram designed t reduce netwrk security. Enter any ther persn s file directry r d anything whatsever t any ther persn s files. Attempting t alter any persn s access rights; r String the fllwing types f files in their hme directry, withut permissin frm their teacher: Prgram files Cmpressed files Picture files, unless they are required by a subject Obscene material pictures r text Obscene filenames Insulting material Passwrd- prtected files Cpyrighted material. 9.1 Access Security It is a cnditin f entry t the BYOD fr Students Prject that students agree t the mnitring f all activities including their files, e- mail and Internet accesses. Mnitring and Lgging A lg f all access t the internet including e- mail will be maintained and peridically scanned t ensure that undesirable internet sites have nt been accessed and that the cntent f e- mail remains within the guidelines described in this dcument. 9.2 Internet usage Internet access is expensive and has been prvided t assist students' educatin. Students must use it nly with permissin, and nt in any unauthrised way. As the Internet is an unsupervised envirnment, the schl has a respnsibility t ensure that, as far as pssible, material btained frm the Internet is nt ffensive r inapprpriate. T this end, filtering sftware has been placed n the Internet links. Ultimately, it is the respnsibility f individual students t ensure their behaviur des nt cntravene schl rules r rules impsed by parents/guardians. The schl is aware that definitins f "ffensive" and "inapprpriate" will vary cnsiderably between cultures and individuals. The schl is als aware that n security system is perfect and that there is always the pssibility f inapprpriate material, intentinally and unintentinally, being btained and displayed. It is the respnsibility f the schl t: prvide training n the use f the Internet and make that training available t everyne authrised t use the schl s internet link take actin t blck the further display f ffensive r inapprpriate material that has appeared n the internet links. Students must nt deliberately enter r remain in any site that has any f the fllwing cntent: Nudity, bscene language r discussin intended t prvke a sexual respnse Vilence Infrmatin abut cmmitting any crime Infrmatin abut making r using weapns, bby traps, dangerus practical jkes r "revenge" activities 7

8 Students must: Fllw schl guidelines and prcedures when preparing materials fr publicatin n the web Nt use material frm ther websites unless they have permissin frm the persn wh created the material. If unsure, they shuld check with their teacher Nt access any ther material that their parents r guardians have frbidden them t see. If students encunter any such site, they must immediately turn ff the BYOD and ntify a teacher. They shuld nt shw the site t their friends first Chat lines (IRC, MIRC, ICQ etc) Real- time chat prgrams (MIRC, ICQ) are nt t be used by students unless instructed by a teacher Cybersafety Parents will be aware f many incidents reprted in the media regarding safety nline. Persnal infrmatin is easily tracked and harvested by thse wh knw hw, s it is imprtant t keep as safe as pssible while nline. This memrandum describes the terms f the prvisins including level f service and scpe f services agreed t by Duncraig SHS, the student and the student s parent(s). Cnditins The slutin is supplied by Duncraig SHS t the student, based upn the fllwing Agreement: 1. The student must take all reasnable care t prevent against any frm f damage and lss f the student wned device. 2. The student will abide by all cnditins utlined in the Students Online Acceptable Usage Plicy. 3. The student and their parent will be slely respnsible and legally accuntable fr any data stred r installed n the student wned device. 4. The student wned device and any sftware installed will be prvided by the Parent and r Student. 5. Student wned devices can nly be cnnected t the schl s wireless netwrk. 6. The Department strngly recmmends that: a. Student wned devices are installed with Anti-Virus prtectin which is either current r the versin immediately prir t the current versin: b. Student wned devices are installed with the recent release f the anti-virus definitins files (ne f the mst recent fur (4) released definitins). c. Student wned devices have Operating System patches which are within seven (7) days f the vendr s release date. d. Student wned devices are enabled t receive aut-updates frm the sftware vendr.
