2 Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES, 2015) The Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES) is an annual, national survey of employees and employment carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) 1. The latest provisional data 2 (for reference date September 2015) was released by ONS on 28 th September The number of employees in stands at 348,900 3 for 2015 (Table 1). With an additional 6,400 working proprietors, the total number of people working in the city (employees 4 plus working proprietors 5 ) totals 355,300. Figure 1 shows similarities of employee status in and City Centre ward. 3 Table 2 shows one year, two year and three year changes in the number of employees in, City Centre ward and comparator geographies. According to the BRES 2015 over the most recent three-year period (2012 to 2015), jobs growth in has consistently outpaced that of comparator geographies. Taking the three-year period as a whole, the number of employees grew by 8.9% across the city and 2.8% in City Centre ward while the number of jobs in the other Core Cities and England both grew by 5.4% and 6.2% respectively. This indicates that has the highest increase in all six periods. 4 Table 3 indicates that the proportion of employees who are part-time (working less than 30 hours) remained constant or reduced by just one percentage point in all geographies between 2014 to In addition the rate of part-time employees in has been constantly lower than its comparators throughout the six year period. The two graphs indicate that has the lowest proportion of part-time employees in relation to its comparators in both the public and private sector throughout the six-year period. 5 Table 4 shows the proportion of jobs accounted for in the public and private sector. This indicates that 18.9% of all jobs in the city are accounted for by the public sector (this is a reduction from the 20.2% recorded for the previous year). This is more than the 17.4% for England. Figure 4b shows percentage change in employees for the public sector for and its comparators. 6 Table 5 indicates that, in the city as a whole, the Health sector accounts for the largest single proportion of all jobs (12.8%), followed by Professional, Scientific and Technical (11.3%) and Business Administration & Support Services (10.8%). Compared to the aggregate of the other seven core cities, has a relatively large proportion of Professional, Scientific and Technical jobs (11.3% compared to 8.6% in the Core Cities). This sector is also noticeably strong in City Centre ward where it accounts for over one-fifth (20.8%) of all jobs. On the other hand, is relatively weak in Manufacturing (3.6% compared to 6.3% in the Core Cities) and Construction (1.8% compared to 3.8% in the Core Cities). 7 Figure 5c shows the percentage change in employees by broad industry group between 2009 to 2015 and 2014 to Between 2009 to 2015 and 2014 to 2015, six sectors showed a decrease and twelve sectors showed an increase in employees. During the six-year period (2009 to 2015), the top three sectors showing a decrease in employees were agriculture, forestry & fishing (24.3%), construction (21.8%) and public administration & defence (19.8%) and the top three sectors showing an increase in employees were mining, quarrying & utilities (110.5%), business administration & support services (54.) and information & communication (43.7%). During the one-year period (2014 to 2015), the top three sectors showing a decrease in employees were motor trade (22.6%), construction (3.3%) and manufacturing (2.4%) and the top three sectors showing an increase in employees were mining, quarrying & utilities (41.5%), information & communication (40.3%) and agriculture, forestry & fishing (23.5%). 8 Figure 6 shows employment in by wards for According to the 2015 BRES, there were 355,300 people in employment in. More than a third worked in the City Centre (34.1%) followed by Ardwick (9.9%), Ancoats & Clayton (8.8%) and Woodhouse Park (7.9%). More than 6 of people are employed in these four wards.
