2 The Desktop Recycle Bin Icons Desktop Icons Start Button Taskbar Minimized Application Working on the Desktop Arranging Icons Click and drag the icon around the desktop. Right click and Sort by or View to set how they are arranged (name/size/type/date). Changing Appearance Right click your mouse on desktop background. Select Personalize to change Background/Wallpaper/Style/Effects/Settings. Creating a New Folder/Document from the Desktop Right click your mouse on desktop background. Select New. Choose Folder/Document, etc. Launching and Application by Icon Double click on icon.

4 The Start Menu Documents your document library. Recent Items The last 15 documents you worked on. Control Panel settings. Search/Run look for files, folders on your computer. Run for launching specific files and applications Programs all the applications installed on your computer. Help assistance for all things Windows. Shutdown the place to properly shut down, log off or restart your computer.

5 Start Menu Items Programs Click on Start. Single left click or hover over on All Programs. Single left click on application or application folder and then application. Application Folder Application

6 Documents Last 15 documents that were open. Instead of opening the application and using File Open commands: Click Start. Single left click on Recent Items. You will see a list of the last 15 documents you worked on. Select a document and it will open in the appropriate application.

7 Control Panel Control Panel settings for your computer. Most of these items you will never need to use. However, this is where you: Back up your computer and fix problems. View network status & tasks. View devices and printers or install a printer, manage sound and power settings. Uninstall an application completely, set default programs, gadgets. Manage User accounts. Adjust your display options. Change your date and time. Keyboard, Mouse, Microphone settings.

8 Search Click on Start Click in the Search programs and files field Enter filename information here. Ex: budget, list.doc, *.xls Examples: If you want to search for a document called budget-something, enter budget* in filename field. (* is a wildcard returns everything that matches) If you click on See more results, you will see all instances and details of your search.

9 Help Click Start Click on Help When the Help menu opens, type in topic in box to search help.

10 Desktop Applications My Computer This is where you can view your various drives. List View Icon View

11 Detail View To View your files in a Different Sort Order in Detail View Click on heading (name/type/size) Recycle Bin Where deleted files/folders go They are still in your system until you Empty the Recycle Bin Double click to open then click File/Empty Recycle Bin OR right click on the icon and select Empty Recycle Bin Exercise Go to Documents Library View folders as List, then Thumbnails, then Details Create a new folder Move a file to the new folder Copy a file to the new folder Delete the duplicate file from Training Folder Undelete the duplicate file from the Recycle Bin Rename that file to a different name Send that file to Desktop as Shortcut Windows Tips Know where your work is. Be aware of where a file goes when you save it. Keep the desktop organized. Delete unused desktop icons. Create shortcuts on your desktop for often used applications and/or documents. Use folders and folders within folders to organize your files. Get used to right-clicking for context menus. Empty your recycle bin. Close programs you re not using (or at least minimize) to conserve resources.
