The students will also learn to analyse and explain the structure of simple and complex sentences in the English language and their constituents. The course will also develop the following generic competences: Learning Outcomes Enrolment Requirements Course contents a) instrumental competences: linguistic skills; oral and written communication; problem-solving skills. b) interpersonal competences: criticism and self-criticism; team-work skills; interpersonal skills; social interaction and cooperation with others. c) systematic competences: a combination of understanding, sensibility, and knowledge which enables one to see the system as a whole and the interaction between its parts; the ability to connect different approaches, sources of knowledge and insights; oral presentation skills. The course will develop and further the following course-specific competences: knowledge of the structure of the English language, level of understanding and production of new linguistic structures, the ability to analyse and compare syntactic structures which enhances the general knowledge of the English language and prepares the students for upcoming courses in the field of English language linguistics. The student has to be enrolled in the 4th semester of undergraduate programme of English language and literature. The aim of this course is to prepare the students for individual analysis of
2 simple and complex sentences in the English language. The students will get acquainted with the basic tenets of the generative-transformational approach to English syntax and the basic differences between it and the descriptive approach. Student questionnaires (Student grade PP7/OB1) Minimum 70% attendance, accepted seminar paper, giving the presentation. Mid-terms and end-of-terms are written exams which include a certain number of multiple-choice questions. Every correct answer brings a certain percentage according to the total number of tasks. The result of the exam is the percentage of correct answers. The grade is formed based on the scales of percentages of possible results: from 0 to 59% - F; from 60 to 69% - D; from 70 to 79% - C; from 80 to 89% - B, from 90 to 100% - A. Seminar papers are not graded; seminar papers can be accepted or rejected. If the seminar paper is rejected, the student should improve the paper until it is accepted in order to be able to take the final exam. The final grade is calculated as the mean value of the two mid-terms. If the student does not pass one or both mid-terms, they are required to take the final exam. In that case, the final grade is formed based on the final exam. If the student is not satisfied with the grade as the mean value of the two endterms, he/she can make an arrangement with their teacher to take the final exam in order to get a better result and a higher grade.
