Supporting Learners in Practice (SLiP) Development and implementation of an innovative multi-professional workshop for practitioners Ann Butler Practice Education Facilitator Debbie Price Practice Education Facilitator
PEF Role PEFs come from a variety of professional backgrounds and are employed through each Trust whilst being funded by the SHA. Their role is to support mentors and educators and to ensure high quality clinical learning environments. They work across both NHS and non-nhs areas to ensure equitable access to support, regardless of where students are placed.
Background 2003 Edge Hill University in partnership with Aintree NHS Foundation Trust developed a 2 day workshop This workshop aimed to prepare practitioners to support and assess pre-registration nursing students This ran successfully for a number of years
Review of the workshop 2010 In light of the Darzi (2008) report the multiprofessional agenda and the changing PEF role the workshop was reviewed An Aintree PEF chaired a SLiP working group examining current workshop content Collaboration between Mersey PEF s AHP s and Scientists
Review of the workshop It became evident that different disciplines use a variety of preparation courses to enable them to formally assess students The existing content was adapted in order to meet the needs of all
Content of the new workshop Teaching methods include Case scenario work Group discussion Power point presentation DVD filmed and produced by PEF s!
DVD Example Filmed and produced by PEF s 2 Scenarios Problem Student Unprofessional Mentor
Workshop Agenda 1. Creating a positive learning environment in a practice setting including inter-professional learning opportunities. 2. Facilitate effective learning dependant on learning style 3. Student supervision, assessment processes, and feedback for life-long learning. 4. Accountability in relation to assessments 5. Failure to fail 6. Common student mentor issues 7. Critical reflection on own and others practices
Revised content The revised content supports inter professional education drivers and the need for collaboration in health and social care (Freund and Drach-Zahvy 2007).
NMC Standards for Preregistration Nursing Education (2010) At certain parts of the programme a person who is suitably prepared can supervise and contribute to the assessment of nursing students Suitably prepared the registered professional has undergone training and development that has enabled them to be competent to support and assess students. the 4 local HEI s are collaborating with the SLiP working group to ensure the content meets the above NMC requirements
Aim of the workshop To provide participants with knowledge and skills necessary to support students learning in a practice setting
Workshop learning outcomes Have an awareness of key challenges when implementing multi-professional learning in the workplace Have recognition of the importance of interprofessional education drivers and the need for collaboration in health and social care Reflect on opportunities for collaborative relationships within practice to improve communication and the student experience
Key Deliverables Increased quality of the learning environment Participants understanding of their own role Diversity of clinical placements
Evaluation Informal feedback suggests that clinicians have found that this workshop supports the existing train the trainer sessions A pre and post evaluation was conducted Pre-evaluation100% response rate from all nineteen candidates across four different professions Pre-evaluation all had similar expectations of the workshop
Evaluation Immediately after the session 89% (17) said the workshop had met all their expectations 11%(2) identified that more input could have been provided on leadership and information relating to specific practice assessment documents These comments have been considered in the review of the workshop
4 weeks post workshop Only 21% return rate Evaluation 50% of respondents identified that they have implemented something in practice since attending the workshop The remaining 50% provided a rationale for not implementing change as had not yet had any students.1 attendee had already applied to undertake a mentorship programme
Resources A PEF is required to run each workshop PEF s come from a variety of professional backgrounds They deliver the workshops as part of their everyday job Rooms are booked in-house therefore no additional cost to the organisation PEF s work across NHS and Non-NHS sector Can offer equitable access to support regardless of where students are placed
Communication A Placement Learning Support System (PLSS) has been setup in the Mersey and Cheshire region Live centralised web enabled system which provides information for health care learners, practice partners and stakeholder Universities PLSS has been utilised to share information on SLiP workshops delivered in different Trusts thereby promoting equity of access
Quality Assurance All sessions are evaluated by participants 10% of all workshops delivered are peer reviewed by other PEF s or HEI representatives
Summary The workshop aims to provide clinical staff with the necessary skills to support learners in practice Content can be amended to meet local, national and professional body drivers The content can be shared across a wide geographical area thereby reaching a larger audience
Summary It can help strengthen professional relationships by enabling participants to share experiences Will enhance the quality of the learning environment, the student experience and ultimately improve the quality of patient care delivery Future consideration will be given to provide an on-line learning tool
