1 Worksheets 1A - 1E 1A In the Rain 1B Rainy Day Clothes 1C Rainy Day Words 1D Rainbows 1E Rainy Day Wordsearch Aims To expand pupils' vocabulary. To enable pupils to identify that some materials are waterproof. To enable pupils to understand how rainbows are formed. Materials A copy of worksheets 1A, B, C, D, E for each pupil and coloured pencils. Method Discuss with the class the different types of clothes that they might wear in wet weather. Prior to this you might ask them to bring an item of wet weather clothing that they wear to school for example, on their head, their feet and their body so that they can look at and feel the texture of the fabrics. Hand out worksheets in order allocating the appropriate amount of time. Ask the pupils to label the clothes they wear in the rain. Pupils could cut out and sort the clothes and glue to a chart or record sheet. Extension Activities - 1A Ask pupils to label their drawing. 1B Pupils could cut out and sort the clothes then glue them onto a record sheet. Questions you might ask include: What kind of shoes, coats, gloves, scarves, hats etc. are the children wearing to school today? What are the colours of these clothes? What clothes do they wear on a rainy day and how do these keep them dry? How does the fabric that they are made of feel?

5 Worksheet 1D - Rainbows When the sun shines on the raindrops you see a rainbow. Sometimes you can see all the colours in the rainbow. Sometimes you can only see some of them. Colour in the rainbow and sing the song... Red and Yellow and Pink and Green, Purple and Orange and Blue. I can Sing a Rainbow, Sing a Rainbow, Sing a Rainbow too. How many colours are there in the rainbow?

7 Worksheet 1F 1F Keeping the Present Dry Aims To enable pupils to identify waterproof and non-waterproof materials. Materials A map of Scotland, different types of paper; some waterproof some not, plastic carrier bags, empty cardboard boxes for pupils to wrap, glue, sticky tape, scissors, a small watering can and a copy of the worksheet for each group. Method Select a place where you want the parcel to be delivered and mark this on the map of Scotland and also the school location. Explain to the children that you want to send a birthday present to a relative/friend but it is very important that the present does not get wet otherwise it will be ruined. Decide what it is that you want to send and show it to the children so that they can see how important it is to keep dry. You would like them to help you decide on the best way to wrap the parcel. Which paper will keep it dry? Divide the pupils into groups of 4. Hand out an empty cardboard box and different kinds of paper and carrier bags to each group with glue, sticky tape and scissors. Hand out the worksheets and explain what the pupils are being asked to do. Once all the parcels are wrapped, the pupils use the watering can to simulate rain and test whether the boxes stayed dry. Pupils record their results. The class can produce a chart with a sample of materials that are waterproof and not waterproof or kept the parcel dry and did not keep the parcel dry.
8 Worksheet 1F - Keeping the Present Dry Activity 1. Choose a piece of paper from the table that you think will keep the present dry. 2. Wrap the box in the paper. Make sure that you cannot see the box under the paper. Stick the edges down well. 3. Fill the watering can with water and take it with your parcel out into the playground. 4.
