Self-employment and family life: Negotiating work-life balance when you re always on Margo Hilbrecht, University of Waterloo Donna S. Lero, University of Guelph Work and Family Researchers Network Conference June 14-16, 2012
Complexities of self-employment flexibility income poten0al sense of autonomy and mastery percep0ons of choice no statutory benefits risk unpredictability job insecurity Meanings, experiences of work- life balance
Drawing on diverse literatures Entrepreneurship and small business Work- life interface - integra0on, segmenta0on Paren;ng - new responsibili0es, emerging ideologies Gender - gender rela0ons and the gendering of 0me Time use - tradi0onal roles exaggerated, DIY solu0on The exclusion of leisure
Work-life fit (Moen, Kelly & Huang, 2008) Fit is dynamic response to assessment of match between expecta0ons and demands of adult roles Life course perspec;ve - demands vary according to different stages Seek to gain control - minimize gap between external demands and individual resources Depends on having enough resources to arend to daily needs Work schedule fit Time adequacy Job security Income adequacy
The study In-depth interviews Experiences, opinions - self- employment and family life Everyday life and rou0nes Time and income adequacy, work schedule fit, job security Construc0ons of choice Meanings of work- life balance Thematic analysis Open, then focused coding (Charmaz, 2006) Reviewing, refining & mapping themes (Braun & Clarke, 2006) MAXQDA10
The participants 11 fathers, 11 mothers (2 single- parent families) At least one child < 19 years old living at home Diversity of jobs excluded professionals 5 with employees Worked 20 hours/week Challenge of assessing work hours 5 worked hours, 7 worked 50+ hours/week 9 mothers, 3 fathers worked mainly from home Business tenure: < 5 years, 5-9 years, >10 years
The whole choice factor is the key component to self- employment it s that feeling of control, that you make the decisions. Mother, interior designer, 1 preschool and 1 school- age child
In control of work schedules I really do love being in control of my days and my time and I would desperately miss that if I do end up going back to work for someone else. Mother, business admin. support, 1 preschooler I can drop everything and say, You know what? This is what s important to me. I don t have to ask anybody, I can just rearrange that time. Mother, interior designer, 1 preschooler and 1 school- age child There is that freedom of being able to do your own schedule, but know it s an expense, right? As soon as you give up that morning to volunteer at her school, you re decreasing your productivity. Mother, artist, 1 school- age child
In control minimizing role strain For me, being laid off is one of the worst feelings a man can have I am the major breadwinner for the home and it just provided a lot of pressure and stress so I just thought, if I took matters into my own hands that I wouldn t have somebody limiting me in that area. Father, sign painter, 2 teenagers Generally, I try and put family first. I mean, that s the whole reason I started my business at home in the first place. Mother, custom window coverings, 2 school- age children It s good for everyone, you know, they re happy. Like seriously, our kids don t even realize how lucky they are to have a parent always available. Father, photographer, 2 school- age children
In control of some things, but not everything Being self- employed allows me to feel more in control of what hours I need to work, but I don t always feel in control of the amount of work I am able to obtain. Mother, event planner, 1 school- age child I don t get laid off any more but I m never satisfied with the income. Whatever I do, like the factory job or the business I started here I don t make money in Canada, like zero. Father, dollar store owner, 2 school- age children
There s no off switch. You re always on. Mother, children s entertainer, 1 preschooler You can t say no to an assignment because it could be your last. Father, freelance writer, 1 teenager
Always on Fuzzy boundaries and dual identities I never turn the brain off if that means something. Father, real estate agent, 3 school- age children Every aspect of my life involves marketing my business whether it is at a hockey game with my son, or at a church function Mother, custom window coverings, 2 school- age children I spend a lot of time volunteering with different charities, but you get a double bonus here you re giving to people and you re getting to advertise. Mother, children s entertainer, 1 preschooler
Always on Few breaks or statutory benefits I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and I was put into a dark, quiet room and I was on the phone because I knew I had appointments and they said, You re working? And I said, I just have to tell people that I can t do do this or that and I m in the hospital. Mother, event planner, 1 school- age child Really, the first year of my daughter s life it was constantly, am I going to be able to get daycare for this? Can I take on this assignment? Mother, leadership coach, 1 preschooler
Work- life balance? It s just one of those really nice things to say. Mother, retail store owner, 1 teenager How I feel about work- life balance is that I ve got it made right now like, I don t think my life could be any better. Father, photographer, 2 school- age children
Work-life balance Time, activity, or state of mind I try to give myself at least two hours with the family because otherwise I ll go nuts, and the kids won t get me and my wife will go nuts because she ll have them all day and all night. I take at least an hour before I go to bed numbed in front of the TV, so the brain will shut off. Father, real estate agent, 1 preschool and 1 school- age child I am for life and work balance I run, I do yoga, I go to different workshops, I dance, I travel I don t just work. For me it s very important to have a life. Mother, online retailer, 1 school- age child Simply the sense that you feel in control. Father, sign painter, 2 teenagers
Gendered perspectives Fathers Breadwinner role prominent More regular business hours, fitting family around work Emphasis on income potential, job stability New men or new circumstances? (Holter, 2007) Mothers Taking responsibility for family schedules and routines Loss of sleep and personal leisure Contributing to income while at home and worrying whether or not they are doing enough
Weaving insights together Paradox of control Time, schedule, income, job security Integrating family life and leisure with business opportunities The influence of ideological systems parenting, gender, work Different forms and meanings of work- life balance DIY solution (Craig, Powell & Cortis, 2010) extends beyond childcare to work conditions and hours, income limitations, job instability Personal troubles and public issues (Mills, 1959)
Funding from the University of Guelph and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is gratefully acknowledged.
