1 Dear Teacher, Enclosed is a play script version of the nativity story. It has been written with whole class participation in mind. The script has twenty-three speaking parts written (these can be altered to suit your needs). They are: 10 narrators Mary Joseph 4 Innkeeprs 3 Shepherds 3 Wise men Angel There are also opportunities for choral speaking. Please note that these are only guidelines. 2 Nativity Play Script Narrator 1: A long time ago in a country far, far away there lived a man and a woman called Mary and Joseph. Narrator 2: They were both young and they loved each other very much. Narrator 3: Mary was soon to give birth to a son who was to be called Jesus. Narrator 4: Mary knew that he was to be a very special baby. Narrator 5: At that time, the Roman Emperor wanted to know how many people lived in his kingdom. So he ordered everyone to go to their hometowns to be counted. Narrator 6: So Mary and Joseph began their journey. They travelled a town called Bethlehem. Narrator 7: They were very poor and so, they only had a donkey and a few things with them. Narrator 8: Mary s tummy was already very big and wasn t long until she would give birth to her child. Mary: (exhausted) Oh Joseph, I am so tired! I really need to find an inn so I can rest. Narrator 9: Joseph wanted to help her dearly, but there was nothing he could do but keep walking along with her and knock on every door. [Mary and Joseph search about the stage and knock on doors] Innkeeper 1: Sorry we re chock-a-block! You should have booked! Innkeeper 2: Sorry, we just rented our last room to a group of travellers. You ll have to try somewhere else. Innkeeper 3: You ll have a job to find a room at this late notice. Sorry, we re full. Onilo Limited,

3 Narrator 10: Just when they were about to lose hope. An Innkeeper came to Mary and Joseph s rescue. Mary and Joseph: Excuse me do you have any rooms? We re desperate! Innkeeper 4: Sorry we re fully booked! Mary and Joseph: (obviously upset) Oh no! What are we going to do? Innkeeper 4: Well, I don t have any rooms, but could I interest you in a stable? You ll be sharing with an ox and a donkey. But I can give you a great rate! Mary and Joseph: (Joyfully) We ll take it! (Joseph gives the innkeeper a high five) Narrator 1: And it was in a manger in this stable that Jesus was born. And Mary and Joseph had never felt so happy. Narrator 2: In a field nearby there were some shepherds who were guarding their sheep at night. When suddenly an angel appeared to them. Shepherds: Ahhhh! Angel: Humble shepherds, be not afraid! Shepherds: Ahhhh! Angel: (switching to an angry mood) I said, DON T be afraid! (Happily) I bring good news! Shepherds: Ooh! Angel: In a manger in Bethlehem, a child is born who will bring peace to earth and joy to all people. You must go and find him! Shepherd 1: But why do we have to go? Angel: (shouting) BECAUSE I SAID SO! Shepherd 2: (whisper) Why did you have to go and make him angry? Shepherd 1: (embarrassed) Sorry! Shepherd 2: Come on boys! Let s go and find this special baby. 4 Angel: Safe journey shepherds and remember to follow the star. It will guide your way. Narrator 3: The shepherds followed the star into the night until they arrived at the stable. Narrator 4: They brought food and drink for Mary and Joseph and felt blessed to have met this special child. Narrator 5: At the same time, three wise men from a faraway land also saw the star. Wise man 2: (startled) Hey boys, look! There s a spaceship in the sky! Ahh! It s aliens, coming to take us away! RUN! Wise man 2: (dryly) Caspar, that s a star! Wise man 1: It is? Wise man 3: (shaking his head) Oh man, we re supposed to be wise! Narrator 6: The umm wise men decided to follow the star and just as it had for the shepherds, it led them to where baby Jesus lay. Narrator 7: The wise men brought generous gifts of gold All: Ooh! Narrator 7: Frankincense All: W-ooow! Narrator: and myrrh All: ye-aa-h! Joseph: Hang on what s myrrh? Narrator 7: Don t look at me! Narrator 8: Anyway, that night was a very special night. For Mary and Joseph, for the shepherds, for the wise men Onilo Limited,

5 Narrator 9: and for mankind, who will go on to tell this story for centuries to come Shepherd 1: What? This story! Really? Angel: Am I going to have to raise my voice at you again shepherd? Shepherd 1: Oops. Sorry! Narrator 10: Yes, that night was a special night. Filled with joy and happiness. A joy and happiness that we continue to share with each other, every year, at Christmas.
