17 Urban climate action (1) The new Covenant of Mayors for climate & energy (since October 2015): Since 2014, 150 cities committed to adaptation measures from 24 countries, 28 M inhabitants; Since 2008, 6700 CoM signatories, 210 M inhabitants from 57 countries; Mainstreaming climate action in to the five European Structural and Investment Funds ( ); as a result 25% or > 114 billion allocated to climate action; The EU Cohesion Policy ( ) support for urban climate action: ofunding opportunities: > 56 billion from the three Cohesion policy funds (ERDF, CF and ESF) allocated to climate change-related actions - majority of these investments will happen in cities; ourban dimension reinforced: 5% of the ERDF earmarked for sustainable urban development. Investments in urban environment, revitalisation of cities, regeneration of brownfield sites, urban deprivation and low carbon economy. Investment in Green Infrastructure - an important element; oto4, TO5, climate change as a horizontal priority (Article 8 of the CPR); oenabling framework (capacity building, technical assistance, territorial cooperation).

20 Urban climate action Next steps and challenges Increased urban resilience across EU: omore cities to undertake adaptation; oto move from strategy development and planning to implementation; oreinforce regional level and local level action through national adaptation frameworks (strengthen vertical and horizontal co-operation); oconsider mitigation and adaptation in combination: efficiency gains (use of available resources, tools, policy and investment plans etc.); oidentify co-benefits awareness raising. More commitments under the new CoM initiative; Reinforced international dimension; Dealing with potentially much more significant climate impacts, i.e. increased intensity and frequency of heat, flooding, water scarecity and droughts, but also forest fires, damage from high wind speeds, spread of pests and infectious diseases with additional impmacts on human health and economy.
