FROM CEO SHARON SIGA On the next twelve pages, you ll find snapshots of the past year at Strathcona County Library saw us embarking on several new ventures, some in partnership with organizations - and some in partnership with other libraries. We tried innovative things within our walls, and also reached out to the community in new ways. You can find more details on some of these initiatives later in the report, including: Installation of internet hotspots in rural Strathcona County Launch of a resume tutor service Hosting a Writer in Residence for part of the year. My thanks go out to our staff, for their passionate service in the community, and to our Board, donors and community partners for another year of support and dedication. Thank you also to our Friends of the Library group, who raise money for Library collections and services, and to the many other volunteers who give generously of their time on our behalf. Finally, I want to thank our patrons, who continue to use and support the Library. You are all a vital part of our mission to provide literacy, learning and leisure in this wonderful community we call our home. Sharon Siga CEO Strathcona County Library Bookmobile specialist Cindy Schmidt with three of our littlest patrons 3
FROM BOARD CHAIR ROB BUTLER Strathcona County has embraced the Library s vision of being at the heart of the community and a hub of information, entertainment and activity. The strategic priorities of the Library are guided by a Plan of Service, created in collaboration with a broad range of representatives from our community. In 2013, we met or surpassed most of the goals set out in our current Plan of Service, including: A 56% increase in Youth Services outreach programs. 10% growth in Bookmobile usage by our rural residents. A 25% increase in attendance at Library programs will see the Library bringing together a new group of community representatives to create our next five-year Plan of Service. As we close out another successful year, we want to offer sincere thanks for the support we receive from Mayor Roxanne Carr and Strathcona County Council, enabling us to serve the large and diverse population of the County. Mary Ann Lippiatt, performing at a T.A.L.E.S. fundraising concert We must also thank the Province of Alberta and in particular, the Honourable Dave Quest and MLAs Jacquie Fenske and Cathy Olesen, who have championed the Library and are familiar faces at our events. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to our caring and professional staff, and to our tireless volunteers, including my colleagues on the Library Board, for their hard work and dedication to the Strathcona County Library. Their work has translated into the great services embraced so enthusiastically by citizens of the County. Take a coffee break on the first floor of the Library Rob Butler Chair Strathcona County Library Board 4

CAREER RESOURCE CENTRE In 2013, the Library launched a Resume Tutor service, paid for by grants from the Rotary Club of Sherwood Park Heartland and CALLS (Community Adult Learning and Literacy Society). Evenings and weekends, when the local Alberta Works office is closed, patrons can book appointments with the tutor, who will work with them to enhance their resume and cover letters. Over the course of the year, our tutor met with 247 patrons, many of whom have reported back success in their employment searches! We also printed, faxed, scanned or copied 18,000 pages of job-search documents free for members of the public in Typical documents are resumes and cover letters. This translates into ten pages per person on average, so approximately 1800 people used this free service, made possible by the Rotary Club of Sherwood Park Heartland. So glad I decided to do this. My tutor is great. I respect her advice and have learned from it. Thank you! Very approachable staff helped de-traumatize the job hunt routine. I have more tools to write my resume. Great advice! Really, I did not expect a one-on-one session. It was great! So appreciate the free service. PAGES OF RESUMES PRINTED, FAXED OR SCANNED IN ,000 PAGES = 50 pages 6
ME LIBRARIES SERVICE In September 2013, ME Libraries Service was introduced. A partnership between the four libraries in the Metro Edmonton Federation of Libraries, this innovative program allowed patrons at Strathcona County Library to register their library card for use at St. Albert Public Library and any branch of Edmonton Public Library -- all at no charge. (Strathcona County Library cardholders already have reciprocal borrowing privileges with Fort Saskatchewan Public Library.) This has a major impact for County residents, removing barriers to borrowing most library materials from any access point in the metro Edmonton area. Near the end of 2013, the ME Libraries Service expanded to include member public libraries in the Parkland area. In 2014, the ME Libraries Service will be further expanded to become province-wide. The ME Libraries Service is the prototype for Alberta Municipal Affairs Alberta-Wide Borrowing initiative, one that brings their vision another step closer to providing seamless access to library resources for all Albertans. 8 WRITER IN RESIDENCE For the first time in 2013, the Library played host to a Writer in Residence. This program was the result of work by the Metro Edmonton Federation of Libraries, a cooperative venture between four libraries: Edmonton Public, St. Albert Public, Fort Saskatchewan Public and Strathcona County. In May and June, and then again in September and October, author Natasha Deen was a vibrant, hard-working presence in our library. She hosted workshops on all aspects of writing, and met one-on-one with patrons to help them develop their skills as authors. Patrons worked on projects that ranged from memoirs to poetry to short stories to novels. She even helped with the writing of a comic book set in the County! ASPIRING WRITERS COACHED ONE-ON-ONE = 5 writers UnlimitED OLDER ADULTS GROUP In 2013, the Library began to host monthly meetings of the UnlimitED Group, a group adopted from Strathcona County Family and Community Services. 15 WORKSHOPS PLUS Writer in Residence Natasha Deen 57 ONE-ON-ONE SESSIONS ATTENDED BY 215 ASPIRING WRITERS DURING 4 MONTHS UnlimitED is open to all older adults interested in the topics generated by the group. Library staff work with attendees to create social and educational programming. A grant subsidizes transportation costs for seniors who would otherwise be unable to come, keeping them connected and engaged with the community. The provincial organization Family and Community Support Services recognized UnlimitED in its 2013 Storybook. 4 MONTHS OF PROGRAMS County seniors attending a library program during the Edmonton & District Historic Festival 60 PARTICIPANTS DURING
INTERNET HOTSPOTS IN RURAL STRATHCONA COUNTY Thanks to Shell Canada funding, the Library has been able to create high-speed internet hotspots at community halls in Brookville, Deville/North Cooking Lake, Good Hope, Hastings Lake, and South Cooking Lake. These hotspots allow internet access for the Bookmobile during its visits, but also give residents stable internet access on a 24/7 basis, something that can be tricky in the County s rural areas. The goal is to help close the rural digital divide: the Central Library offers urban and rural residents public access to high-speed Internet and computer training, and now public access Internet and computer training opportunities are possible in more rural locations. COMMUNITY IMPACT 5 HOTSPOTS PROVIDING INTERNET ACCESS 24 7 HOURS A DAY DAYS A WEEK 9
JIM GILL CONCERT In October, the Library welcomed much-loved children s performer Jim Gill for a one-night-only family concert. Sherwood Park was the only Canadian stop on Gill s Contagious Tunes Tour. Hosted during National Family Week, this tour marked the 20th anniversary and re-release of Gill s 1993 Contagious Tunes, a CD that s been loved by a generation of families. Children and their parents packed the Community Centre s Agora, singing, dancing and generally having a whale of a time. Jim Gill also has graduate credentials in child development, and led a workshop for early childhood professionals and parents the following day, on using play as a learning tool. 11 FUND DEVELOPMENT $65,952 donated in 2013 INDIVIDUALS CORPORATIONS COMMUNITY GROUPS IN MEMORY OF LOVED ONES In 2013, we received donations from individuals, corporations, community groups and in memory of loved ones. These donations have provided, among other things, express book collections for children, prizes for summer reading games and programming for seniors. We greatly value the partnerships that have been established with our donors, and look forward to continuing to work with them in FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY SOCIETY The annual Friends Garden Tour was held July 14. The weather mostly cooperated and we raised over $7,200. The Friends worked a casino in August, with proceeds of $21,000. Also in August was the annual Book Sale. Friends volunteers were instrumental in the set-up and sales, and the event made $9,700. In October, the Friends hosted a wine-tasting event called Books, Bites and Bubbly. This event raised $2,600. Our annual Gift Wrap fundraiser at Sherwood Park Mall saw 73 volunteers donating 385 hours and the proceeds were $9,400. And finally, the very deserving recipients of the 2013 Muriel Abdurahman Volunteer Award were Hugh and Helen Lavender. Helen was our original Bookmobile driver, and her commitment to the Library has continued following her retirement. Hugh has volunteered countless hours as well -- first on Bookmobile repairs, and more recently as an active Friend. 15 The Provincial Libraries Act of Alberta requires that public libraries have their annual financial statements audited by an external auditor. KPMG, our external auditor, provided us with an unqualified audit opinion that our financial statements for the year ended December, 31, 2013 present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Library and our results of operations, our change in net debt and our cash flows in accordance with Canadian public sector accounting standards. The Strathcona County Library Audited Financial Statements and Notes to the Financial Statements for the year ended December 31, 2013 are available in the Library Board section of our website at 15
