This same team of teachers and faculty will develop strategies to improve teaching and learning of mathematics, engineering and science at the university level. A win-win at all levels. 8 programs for professionals working with special populations Julie Elena 06 M.S.Ed., Counseling A desire to help others led Julie Elena to the graduate program in counseling. Adolescence is so tumultuous, she says. I d like to help create a smoother road for middle and high school students. Her naturally generous spirit led to involvement in campus efforts to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina victims, which, along with her excellent grades, helped her win a 2006 American Counseling Association Ross Trust Graduate Scholarship. Only 15 such awards were made nationwide. Julie s experience at Hofstra has been empowering. It s a place to grow, to learn, and to be validated about your career choice, she says. Julie has special praise for the faculty. They encourage our passion for the subject. 6

This emphasis on marrying applied and theoretical knowledge in order to further social and educational justice and to foster equity and accountability within systems and communities is the thread that unites our education and allied human services programs. 10 the edge you want In selecting a graduate program in the field of education or human services, you have many options. So, why consider Hofstra s School of Education, Health and Human Services? Here are a few excellent reasons. a first-class education on an individualized basis This isn t lip service. Our classes rarely exceed 25 students. You get to know your professors, and they get to know you. There is plenty of opportunity for student-faculty interaction and personal attention, particularly since programs are generally served by full-time faculty. This nurturing environment doesn t end when you graduate. Mentoring and networking opportunities are available in many programs, as well as in-service training, guest lectures and other professional development activities. innovative programs As a private institution, we have greater flexibility than a larger public university to allocate resources to meet what we consider to be student needs. For example, we redesigned the master s programs in health administration and community health to reflect the changing needs of that marketplace. Our various counseling programs were revamped to help students meet New York state s new licensing requirements. Our master s in the teaching of writing has been revitalized to meet new classroom needs, and we implemented a summer study abroad program in Guatemala to give education graduate students a hands-on, culturally diverse learning experience. excellent job placement rates Chances are that if you work in education or human services in the New York area, you know successful Hofstra alumni. This network of graduates and the field work relationships we maintain with many local schools and human service organizations give us the ability to assist students in finding excellent job opportunities. The Office of Certification and Advisement helps new teachers navigate the state certification process, and the Hofstra Career Center serves all graduates as a resource throughout their professional lives. availability of financial aid Many programs offer grants, scholarships, stipends and other forms of aid, particularly to help students meet financial obligations during student teaching, internships and other field work. access to the latest technology tools Hagedorn Hall, where many School of Education, Health and Human Services courses are taught, is a new, state-of-the-art facility with computer projection equipment, Internet access and other high-tech equipment in classrooms. Education students can learn to use electronic portfolios, create Web pages, or utilize assistive devices for special education students. Students in healthrelated programs benefit from hands-on experience with heart rate monitors and use of personal digital assistant devices to collect data and maintain records. unique on-campus resources In addition to our outstanding Axinn Library facilities and its electronic library with more than 120 databases, 17,000 full-text journals, and 18,700 electronic books accessible via the Internet from wherever you are, the campus boasts many other facilities. The Institute for the Development of Education in the Advanced Sciences (IDEAS) aims to create public visibility and enhanced understanding of advances in science and technology through lectures and programs open to educators and members of the public. The Saltzman Community Services Center is not only a premier provider of human services for the public, but also an outstanding training facility for students in Hofstra education and human services programs. 11 Jared Bloom 03 M.S.Ed., Secondary Education, English For Jared Bloom, the tech industry downturn of the late 1990s was a lucky break. It gave him the opportunity to leave the business world and pursue his dream of teaching high school English. In choosing Hofstra for his graduate training, Jared found just what he wanted. I was looking for a program that was flexible and could accommodate my schedule, he says. I also was looking for faculty who were working in the field, who knew the latest pedagogy and theory. Hofstra has top people who know what s going on in the classrooms. It is not just a theoretical education. It s a practical one, too. Jared can count himself among those top people today since he is also an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education and Allied Human Services. 9

12 advanced degrees that advance your career Stephanie Burke 03, 06 B.S., Community Health Education M.H.A., Health Administration After earning her undergraduate degree, Stephanie Burke worked for several health organizations, including Planned Parenthood and the Centers for Disease Control. But she knew that a graduate degree was the fast track to the top jobs, and she once again turned to Hofstra. I loved my teachers, and I thought to myself, I ll do it again! Her instincts about the faculty proved correct. The professors are available and supportive. They guide you, she says. They see something in you and help you to develop it. She was right about her job prospects, too. A few weeks before graduation, Stephanie accepted the position of assistant director of a residential facility for adults with mental illness. 10
