Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club Higham Lane School Proposal 2015/16 Proposal: Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club ultimately require a home that has an outdoor cricket pitch, an indoor sports centre for our winter coaching and a base of young people we can coach and develop who can have a pathway for their success and performance through the sport of cricket. The model we propose is one employed by some of the top schools in the country and one which we propose to Higham Lane School. 1. We propose that Higham Lane School is the home of Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club; 2. Our outdoor cricket matches would take place from April to August every weekend on Saturdays and some afternoons and evenings during the week; 3. Our outdoor summer community cricket sessions would take place on the outdoor pitch every Sunday from 10am to 12noon; 4. Our outdoor summer performance cricket sessions would take place on the outdoor pitch every Sunday from 12noon to 2pm; 5. Our indoor community training sessions would take place from 10am to 12noon on Sundays from September to March; 6. Our indoor summer performance cricket sessions would take place on the outdoor pitch every Sunday from 12noon to 2pm; 7. We use the Sports Hall for changing and cricket teas during matches; 8. We would like to utilise the funding from Sport England for an NTP to replace the current NTP at Higham Lane School. This would enable us to play league matches for the adult, youth and junior leagues as part of the Warwickshire County League; 9. During school time the School would use the NTP; 10. Sport England funding is available to establish a cricket square next to the current NTP; 11. Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club and Higham Lane School establish a sports agreement which enabled funding to be accessed for cricket coaching and cricket development during school time; 12. Funding is to be sought for a score box for matches and training; 13. Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Coach would be able to deliver cricket training sessions in school time; 14. Level 1 Cricket Coaching and Coach Support Worker courses are offered to Sixth Form students as part of their personal and professional development; 15. We consider your current rates of hire and align these to the potential funding we can attract and deliver to the sports development of the Higham Lane School site. 2

Introduction Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club was formed in January 2015 providing cricket coaching and organised team cricket for everyone, both girls and boys from the age of 4 onwards. The club specialises in the whole range of adult, youth and junior cricket provisions. The club is affiliated to the English Cricket Board, Warwickshire Cricket Board and Warwickshire Cricket League. The club has teams in the Warwickshire Adult League and the Junior Leagues. The determination is to establish a sports centre of excellence and enable this to be available to as wide a range of the population as possible. The short to medium term vision is to establish a Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and as a social enterprise thus enabling it to be a sustainable body for the future. Alumni Team The team of Higham Lane School Alumni have a sports playing and development background. They have an ambition to develop their coaching skills through obtaining qualifications as well as certification in club management. Zain Khan Currently studying in his second year of a Mathematics BSc at the University of Leicester. He has played cricket for Higham Lane School and at local cricket clubs including Nuneaton Cricket Club, Griff & Coton, Ambleside and Coventry & North Warwick. His extensive cricket playing and wide experience of clubs took him to a qualification as a League Umpire in March 2016 and he is about to embark on the level 1 Cricket coaching qualification too. Justin Miller Currently studying in his second year of a Sports Development degree at Loughborough University. Justin's passion is to become a qualified Basketball Coach and develop the sport for young people and become a professional in this area. Whilst at King Edwards College Justin has volunteered as a sports assistant at Higham Lane School. Hasnain Khan Currently studying in his second year of A levels at King Edwards College and has been accepted and received offers to study Medicine at Sheffield University and Hull York Medical School. Hasnain played extensively for local football clubs including Higham United, Ambleside, St Nics and Chetwynd. He went onto to play for Coventry City and Birmingham City. He is currently a qualified Football Association Referee officiating at matches on a weekly basis at Ambleside and Milby. He has been an Assistant Cricket Coach where he has been training juniors from age 5 to 15 on a weekly basis since August This is in the process of leading to a level 1 cricket coaching qualification. 3

Amna is joined here by Warwickshire s Women s Officer, Laura Crofts and her fellow Women s Coordinator Rita Mistry. The foundations of a girls cricket structure was discussed and devised. Amna Khan Currently studying at Higham Lane School in Year 10 preparing for her GCSE s and a Senior Prefect. As the Women s Officer for Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club, Amna has been working with the County Women s Development a Officer at a Warwickshire a Cricket Board to establish and expand girls cricket. Amna has been an Assistant a Cricket Coach and as such conducts coaching for the juniors aged between 5 and 8. Amna has obtained funding for a girls and women's only sports indoor sessions and arranged these at the Etone Centre. These have been a resounding success with between 20 and 25 attending every week for 10 sessions. Further funding is being sought to setup a second phase of sessions. Women's Sports Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club elected Amna Khan to the position of Women's Development Officer in September Amna is senior prefect at Higham Lane School and has proactively worked with the Warwickshire County Women's officer. This has resulted in a series of sessions being held for women and girls at the Etone Centre. It has also seen 8 girls registering as junior players and attending the Sun coaching sessions. The club has a Women's Development Officer, 12 junior girls training and a further 20 youth and women attending weekly coaching sessions. Here the Women s & Girls Group is pictured with the Mayor of Nuneaton & Bedworth, Cllr Barry Longdon at the Annual Fundaiser at the Etone Centre on Leicester Road. Social & Economic Deprivation: Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club aim their services towards the socially and economically deprived areas of the Borough of Nuneaton & Bedworth. Parts of the Borough possess some of the highest forms of social and economic deprivation in the County of Warwickshire and are therefore a target for support and positive action. 4

The Community Need: This area is probably the nearest thing Warwickshire has to an Inner City environment, with the highest proportion of terraced housing, the highest percentage of households with no car or van and the fourth highest percentage of social rented housing. The percentage of the population which is non-white is more than double the County average. According to the Index of Multiple Deprivation, this area is the most deprived locality in Warwickshire and some of its constituent parts are among the top 10% most deprived nationally. According to the MOSAIC profile the most over-represented groups are the most deprived. The area has a slightly younger age profile than the County average but it also has the highest rates of poor health and disability in the County. The proportion of the locality s working age population who are claiming benefits is over double the County average. The percentage of pensioners in receipt of pension credits is double the County average and the percentage of people in fuel poverty is the second highest out of all 30 localities. According to the latest data (2008), one in four children are considered to be living in poverty in the locality and the percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals is more than double the County average. The locality has the least well qualified adult population: 41.7% of the population have no qualifications compared to the County average of 27.8%. This lack of skills is likely to continue, since the percentage of pupils achieving five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and Maths) is 16 points below the County average and the rate of unauthorised absence from school is twice the County average. The percentage of Year 11s Not in Education, Employment or Training is double the County average, the highest of all 30 localities. Abbey & Wem Brook s crime rate of 173 per 1,000 population is more than two and a half times the County rate. Rates of the individual categories of crime range between two and three times the County averages. Anti-social behaviour incidents are more than twice the County average. Unsurprisingly, the satisfaction of the residents with the area as a place to live is lower than the County rate and their main issue requiring improvement are activities for teenagers. This locality is one of only two to nominate clean streets in their top three issues requiring improvement, which may be a reflection of the level of ASB incidents and/or the town centre location. The Borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth is over represented in statistics where there are rising levels of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. The wards of Abbey and Wembrook share communities that local sports clubs have struggled to engage which has resulted in low levels of engagement. The Borough plan repeatedly recognises the emphasis that is needed in these areas. Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club is more than a sports club but has extended itself to encompass health development, community education, physical sports development and dietary Education and development. 5

Consultation: Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club was formed as a result of a consultation carried out amongst young people and families in Nuneaton about their exercise and fitness habits. It became evident that a series of streams and views emerged and these are detailed follows: 1. Virtually all young people had experienced and participated in sport whilst at School; 2. Their experience of organised and team sports was at school; 3. After leaving school their access to sports facilities and activities is through the existing sports clubs in the Borough; 4. Leaving school and education has resulted in no further or little access to such sports resources; Business Model: The charging of fees to join a club, play a match, take part in coaching & training sessions and buying clothes and kit has traditionally been seen as a barrier to participation. Numerous attempts had been made to enable members of the communities to take part in sports and leisure activities. The Sports Governing Bodies and existing sports clubs have insisted and actively encouraged the payments of these various fees and then have been perplexed as to the lack of participation of certain communities from economically and socially deprived areas in our society. Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club therefore took the decision to refrain from charging participants and their families. Instead fundraising events are arranged where families, the wider communities and the club's partner agencies are encouraged in a community cohesion exercise. These occasions are designed to raise much needed funds and pay for equipment and club expenses. All efforts are made by the club officers to negotiate best possible rates and discounts to support the business model. In return the club's media team ensure that the maximum level of media coverage is achieved for the club and also the host facility organisation. This results in an arrangement with the facility being more of a partnership rather than a mere hire arrangement. Qualifications & Certifications: Nuneaton Abbey Cricket Club has two Level 2 Cricket Coaches and 3 Level 1 Cricket Umpires. The Club also has two of their coaches qualified as Club Welfare Officers. All coaches have been DBS checked and have current First Aid and Child Protection qualifications. 6

Corporate Sponsors: Jaguar Land Rover are a corporate sponsor and have supported our junior coaching and junior training kit. The Crave Dessert Parlour on Queens Road in Nuneaton provide our very traditional cricket teas for matches and supported the catering for our Annual Parents & Children's Cricket Tournament. Summer Coaching 2015: The summer coaching sessions commenced on Sun 16 August 2015 and took place from 10am to 1pm. Winter Coaching 2015/16: The winter coaching sessions commenced on 06 September 2016 and continue every week until today. 7

Summer Coaching 2016: The summer coaching sessions have continued from 01 May 2016 and are being held at the Etone Centre but they are outside on the all weather Astro Turf. Annual Fundraiser 2015: The Club's annual fundraiser was held at the Etone Centre on 18 October The chief guest was the Mayor of Nuneaton & Bedworth and was joined by Cllr Ian Lloyd and representatives of Warwickshire Police and local community organisations. Parents produced food and donated this to the club. The club sold the food to families and friends attending the fundraiser and all proceeds went to the club. A series of activities took place at the event which raised money for the club including the following: 1. Fast Bowling Radar Machine; 2. Bowling Machine; 3. Football Penalty Shootout; 4. Basketball Shootout; 5. Table Tennis; 6. Police Riot Van Display. Over 600 was raised at the event which all went towards cricket equipment for the juniors. Children's & Parents Cricket Tournament: Parents have stood by the sidelines and watched their children's coaching sessions every Sun morning. A Tournament was held on 20 December 2015 to allow Children and their Parents to play cricket together. A great turnout resulted in a 3 hour tournament at the Etone Centre. Fun was had by all along with some healthy rivalry. 8

Annual Fundraiser 2016: The Club's annual fundraiser has been organised to take place at the Etone Centre on Sun 07 August The activities planned are as follows: 1. Fast Bowling Radar Machine; 2. Bowling Machine; 3. Football Penalty Shootout; 4. Basketball Shootout; 5. Table Tennis; 6. Police Riot Van Display. Umpire's Qualifications: Zain Khan qualified as one of the youngest Umpires in Warwickshire when he went through the level one version of the course in March He was joined by NACC coaches Shabbir Esmail and Qamar Bhatti Khan. Club Welfare Officers Qualifications: Club Coaches Shabbir Esmail and Qamar Bhatti Khan qualified as Club Welfare Officers attending a course at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Feb Player Development Programme: The weekly coaching sessions on Sundays from 12noon to 1pm are for those seeking to extend their performance and for one to one sessions. These sessions concentrate on techniques and support the individual development of players. This session has assisted youth players that require support sessions to assist their GCSE exams and course work. This has included video work and producing coursework towards explaining their cricket and being able to demonstrate their understanding of the game and being able to explain specific skills and techniques. 9
