2 FOR HIGHLY DURABLE COMPONENTS BÖHLER VMR is an ultra high steel for motorsport and advanced engineering applications. Excellent mechanical properties are combined with the ultimate level of cleanliness in a heat treatable steel. Application Highly fatigue loaded components in motorsport and advanced engineering industries, e.g. cam shafts, gudgeon pins, con rods, crankshafts, bolts and drive shafts. 3 Heat treatment sequence HEAT TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS Hardening Supplied condition Annealed, 205 HB max. Heat treatment Stress relieving 650 bis 700 C (1202 to 1292 F) After through-heating, soak for 1 to 2 hours in a neutral atmosphere. Cool slowly in furnace. Hardening C ( F)/ depending on the required properties oil, salt bath 500 bis 550 C (932 to 1022 F), polymere, air, vacuum furnace with gas quenching Holding time after through-heating: 15 to 30 minutes Tempering Slowly heat to tempering temperature immediately after hardening. Time in furnace: 1 hour for every 20 mm of workpiece thickness but at least 2 hours. Cool in air. We recommend that the steel should be tempered at least 3 times. 1 st tempering approx. 30 C (86 F) above maximum secondary hardness. 2 nd tempering to desired working hardness. The tempering chart shows average tempered hardness values. 3 rd for stress relieving at a temperature 30 to 50 C (86 to 122 F) below highest tempering temperature. 6 MACHINING RECOMMENDATIONS DELIVERY CONDITION As you like it! A wide variety of possibilities when it comes to the machining and finishing of long products allows us to dedicate ourselves to customer requirements individually and rapidly in the BÖHLER service tradition. Rolled bar steel is put through a heat treatment and machined, finished and tested according to customer specifications. BÖHLER endeavours to fulfil every customer request regarding surface treatment: bar steel, round-peeled, peeled and polished, continuously ground or turned; machined at both ends upon request; bar steel, flat milled and cut to large-scale flat dimensions and ingots. In the BÖHLER tolerance range you require. For example: IBO ECOMAX bar steel, peeled ECOBLANK bright steel, peeled and polished, decarb-free ECOFINISH bright steel, band ground BRIGHT STEEL ground and polished Condition: annealed.
