1 Chapter 15 Exercise & Sport Psychology The Framework of Exercise & Sports Psychology Rejeski & Brawley Exercise & sports psychology is composed of 4 distinct yet related areas Health psychology Exercise psychology Sports psychology Rehabilitation psychology Model assumptions Content in each of the areas is linked to the discipline of psychology Examination of relevant issues involves using a range of models & techniques from various aspect of psychology Each of the 4 areas is distinct & yet has an important relationship w/ each of the other areas 1

4 One of the classic dispositional theories comes from the ancient Greeks Humors Trait theory Traits are relatively enduring, highly consistent internal attributes that an individual possess Cattell, RB» 16 Personality Factor (16PF) Motivation 3 components Motivation is involved in the choices we make to participate in some activities and/or avoid participating in others Motivation refers to how much an individual invests in an activity Motivation is persistence, which is what keeps an individual engaged in a behavior, often in the face of obstacles or setbacks Approaches to Studying Motivation McClelland-Atkinson model Personality(individual) & situational (environmental) factors Numerous social-psychological theories of motivation have grown out of the initial McClelland-Atkinson model» Social cognitive theory» Attribution theory 4

6 Models of Arousal & Performance Drive Theory Performance increases in linear fashion as arousal increases (Fig 15-5) Performance is a function of the interaction b/n habit & drive (arousal) Inverted U Hypothesis Optimal arousal (Fig 15-6) Exercise & Mental Health Exercise has long been recognized as having the potential to influence our moods and emotions Anxiety & Depression Based on the large number of studies to date, it is safe to say that exercise is associated with reduction in anxiety and depression» Dose-response Psychological well-being The majority of research examining psychological changes associated with exercise and physical activity has focused on reduction in negative emotions. However, growing evidence shows that exercise can also be effective in enhancing and improving positive psychological states 6
