Guide to the records of the Medical Department of the Church Mission Society Last updated July 2016

Early records of the medical side of CMS work, primarily dating from the formation of the Medical Mission Auxiliary Committee and appointment of the first Medical Secretary in 1891 to the early 1950s but also including a few missionaries medical papers dating up to 1978 and records of the CMS Medical Board Early history The Medical Department grew out of the need to finance the Society s medical mission work. The CMS had been sending qualified medical missionaries overseas since the early 1830s. The missionaries were largely responsible for raising their own money locally until a Medical Missionary Auxiliary Fund was established in The money soon ran out so in 1891 the 'Auxiliary Committee on Medical Missions' was established to promote the Fund. By 1895 the Medical Mission Auxiliary (MMA) was funding all of the Society s medical missions. Quite a commitment as, by 1898, the CMS had 49 medical missionaries and was supporting over 1200 hospital beds. The work continued to grow and in 1898 the original Auxiliary Committee was merged with a new 'Medical Committee'. The new committee had responsibility not only for raising funds but also for considering medical and medical mission matters arising from all of the Society's work and reported to the other CMS committees. In 1905, the Home and Overseas work of the Medical Mission Auxiliary was divided into two separate divisions or sections; the term MMA generally came to be used to refer to the section dealing with the Home side of medical mission work and was attached to the CMS Home Division; the overseas side remained directly under the Medical Secretary and Medical Committee in the CMS Foreign Division. Scope of work The medical side of CMS work concerned not only funding, supporting, promoting and advising on the Society s medical mission work but also the health of the Society's missionaries. The CMS Medical Board was a professional advisory body which assessed whether or not candidates and missionaries were fit for service and considered general issues relating to the health of missionaries. Its members, all of whom were doctors, sat on the Medical Committee. 1

For many years, the Medical Secretary was also the Society Physician responsible for medical examination of CMS candidates and missionaries; he was also a member of the Medical Board. The main areas of medical mission work overseas were in India and China, but there were also active medical missions in Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, Egypt, Palestine and Iran and, to a lesser extent, in Canada and Japan. In addition to the financing of staff and provision of drugs, supplies and equipment, medical funds were used to support the building of numerous hospitals and dispensaries. By 1941 there were around 240 medical missionaries and wives and 1300 trained non-western doctors and nurses working in 52 hospitals, 108 outstations, and 'hundreds of maternity and welfare clinics'; in this one year staff saw 94,000 inpatients and dealt with approximately 2,500,000 out-patients attendances. The main focus of work in the UK was on fundraising, exhibition work and other means of equipping and promoting the work of the medical missions, including, from 1892, publication of an official journal. Much of the fundraising and supply work was conducted through a network of local branches and a series of sub-departments. Including: Hospital Supply Department: originally set up to supply medical missions with bandages and old linen and each hospital with complete sets of bedding and clothing, it later began to supply medical equipment of all kinds. Sale of Work Department: supplied boxes of needlework free to CMS medical mission stalls at Sales of Work. Patterns Department: looked after and sent out paper patterns provided for supporters making clothes, quilts etc for hospital patients. Foreign Stamps Department: collected stamps and sold them for funds. Linen Rag Society: started in January 1892 to furnish CMS hospitals with linen, cotton wool, lint, sheets, blankets, flannel and bandages supplied by members and sent out by the Missionary Leaves Association (see MLA). Boys Brigade Branch of the MMA: founded in 1892 to raise funds and support the work of the Society's medical missions; by 1942 it was raising over 1,000 a year. Order of the Red Cross: a medical mission prayer union established to link those interested in the work of medical missions. Members were expected to pray 2

regularly for medical mission work, to try to help through gifts of money, clothing, dressings or providing articles for Sales of Work and to interest friends in the work. Bermondsey Medical Mission. In 1901 the Medical Committee set up a special training home for women which was run as a medical mission for local women and children. The aim was to 'maintain the same spiritual atmosphere which [one] would expect to find in one of the Society's medical missions, schools or other institutions abroad' whilst providing basic medical training for women candidates through 3 month courses of lectures and practical work. Type of records The records concern both support of the Society's medical mission work and the health of the Society's missionaries, including records compiled by the Society's Physician. For example: Home and overseas correspondence Committee minutes and papers Complete sequences of official journals Medical Mission financial papers and correspondence including detailed annual returns and building grant application papers Medical papers and correspondence including missionary health statistics, small sequences of medical examination records and missionaries medical papers Policy papers Tour reports and review papers giving detailed overviews of the Society s medical work and issues affecting the health of its missionaries 1900-c 1950 Correspondence relating to work with affiliated organisations including the British Empire Leprosy Relief Association (BELRA) Miscellaneous items including a portrait of CMS medical missionary Dr Harold Gunther Berkowitz by the artist Estella Canziani ( ) 3

Why consult the records of the CMS Medical Department? The Society was at the forefront of medical mission agencies operating during a time of tremendous advance in tropical medicine and was, in its own words, the largest medical mission agency in the world. The records are a key source for the study of: medical mission as a form of evangelism history of medicine colonial history architectural history biographical/family history What if I can t find what I want in the Medical Department Records? You will find more information about the Society s medical mission work and its medical missionaries in: Records from the CMS overseas (mission) series eg the Annual Letter.s Records of other CMS departments including the General Secretary s Department (CMS/G), the Candidates Department (CMS/C), the Women's Department (CMS/W) and the Home Division (CMS/H). For example, in the records of the Home Division there are leaflets on medical missions and child welfare including some designed for children, publicity material for exhibitions and annual meetings, posters, hymns and prayers, booklets on general medical subjects, leprosy hospital supplies, medical collecting boxes. CMS periodicals such as The Intelligencer and the annual Proceedings of the Church Missionary Society /1922 (for the latter, look for Medical Missions under the Index of Special Topics). 4

There is a list of all medical missionaries before 1900 (men and women ) in Eugene Stock's Centenary Volume of the History of the Church Missionary Society. The CMS Unofficial Papers (CMS/ACC) are another useful source particularly for research into the work of individual medical missionaries. We also hold records of medical missionaries and medical mission work in the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society collection (CEZ). Publications Dr Harold G[ilbee] Anderson's journal of a tour as CMS Medical Secretary 16 May- 27 October 1944 has been published as 'Flying Visit: a tour of the C.M.S front in Africa and the Near East'. London: Church Missionary Society, But we don t have a copy at the moment Handy hints! Don t assume if someone is a medical missionary that all of their records will be in the Medical Department papers. Do consider using the Medical Department records for missionaries who were not involved in medical mission work - medical records can be full of biographical detail not held elsewhere. Don t despair if you are looking for information concerning medical missions or missionaries before 1891 try the General Secretary s Department minutes and correspondence. You can search for medical missions and medical missionaries by name or under medical. in the indexes to the main committee minutes (CMS/G/C 1A). Do remember that the Medical Department records are arranged in two sequences, the main sequence of post-1950 material is catalogued separately (see CMS/M59). Do be aware that the accounts in the official journals were largely intended to attract recruits and funds for furthering work rather than being aimed at a scholarly scientific audience.
