1 AUTOMOTIVE AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING SYSTEMS AUMT 1445 David Barrett Automotive Technology Building Office Hours Arranged (903) ext or Course Description: The theory of automotive air conditioning and heating systems. Emphasis on the basic refrigeration cycle, diagnosis and repair of system malfunctions. Covers EPA guidelines for refrigerant handling and new refrigerant replacements. Prerequisite: AUMT 1305 (4-3-3) Course Rationale: Modern vehicles are designed to provide passengers with comfort, convenience, and safety. Such accessory systems can be quite elaborate. Servicing air-conditioning equipment must be performed both safely and accurately. Concerns over the proper handling of air-conditioning refrigerant are particularly important. The cost of these repairs makes doing it right the first time extremely important. Course Outcomes/SCANS Competencies: This course is designed as a lecture/lab. We cover chapters in the textbook and associated lab tasks. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Explain the operation of the basic refrigeration cycle. (1, 2, 4, 5) 2. Evaluate and repair air distribution systems. (1, 2, 4, 5) 3. Explain proper maintenance of complete air-conditioning system. (1, 2, 4, 7) 4. Demonstrate proper procedures for handling refrigerant. (1, 2, 7, 8) 5. Describe the operation air-conditioning and heating controls. (1, 2, 4, 5) 6. Select correct repair procedures for air-conditioning system malfunctions. Lab: Automatic control systems. Review for final. Final LAB: Lab assignments are a vital part of the learning process in this course. The tasks are designed to reinforce the textbook material. You will be expected to complete the assigned tasks and have them signed off by the instructor. No work that falls outside the subject matter being covered will be allowed. Work on vehicles that do not belong to a student of the automotive program, or faculty members that have not been authorized by the instructor is prohibited. All project work must be authorized by the instructor. You maybe asked to show proof of ownership of the vehicle prior to beginning work. Appropriate clothing for lab work should be worn. There is a locker room area for storage of your shop clothes. Safety glasses must be worn in the shop at all times. No smoking in the shop or classroom at anytime. Cellular phones are not to be used in the lab area. The use of a phone in the lab will be considered a safety violation. Failure to follow the lab safety rules can result in removal of a student from the class on either a temporary or permanent basis. Classroom Policies: Attendance Kilgore College requires punctuality and regular class attendance. An absence is defined, as a student s not being in class. Tardiness can also be considered absence if it becomes excessive. An instructor may drop a student when lack of attendance prohibits the student from meeting course objectives or when the student has excessive absences. Excessive absences are defined as two weeks of instruction in a long term or no more than 12.5% of the total hours of instruction in any term.

4 Civility Students are expected to assist in maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. Inappropriate or distractive classroom behavior is prohibited in order to assure that everyone has opportunity to gain from time spent in class. Should a disruptive classroom incident occur, the faculty member in charge may remove the student on either a temporary or permanent basis. Students have the right to appeal through appropriate channels. Cellular phones will be turned off or on silent during class. Interruptions caused by any such device will affect the student s participation grade. Evaluation: Lab Lab task completion as well as safety, conduct, clean up, attendance and appearance in lab will be 50% of the final grade. Quizzes There will be a quiz following the completion of each chapter. These quizzes should take no longer than 45 minutes and have no more than 25 questions. These questions will be from textbook, class lecture, training videos and lab work. Quizzes will be true/false, multiple choice and short answer. A review will be held the class period prior to test day. Make-up Quizzes: The student is responsible for any work missed regardless of the cause of the absence. If you miss a quiz for any reason it must be taken by the end of the next class period to receive full credit. Each class period there after 10 points will be deducted from the quiz until it is made up. Classroom: Daily classroom participation grades will be derived from an individual s interaction and involvement during lecture/discussions. This grade will be averaged as a quiz grade. Final Exams: The final exam will be 50 question in length made up of previous quizzes. Final may also include some hands on, special tool and parts identification. No scantron will be needed for this test. The final exam will comprise 25% of your final grade. Grading: The final grade for the course will be arrived at by: Kilgore College grading scale: Quizzes and classroom participation averaged to comprise 25% A Lab tasks, safety and conduct 50% B Final Exam 25% C For a possible total of 100% D Below 60 F NATEF Certification will require a grade no less than a B. EPA Refrigeration Certification requires a grade of no less than a C

5 Student may Drop with a W prior to completion of 75% of the course.
