2 Main Objective of the Conference The aim of this conference is to acquaint attendees with new trends in the spheres of education and research within the civil engineering academic discipline in the enlarged EU, to consider new possibilities of improving the educational and research sphere and to increase cooperation among the European Union members as well as non-eu countries. The conference is intended for deans and other representatives of civil engineering faculties, institutes and departments. The conference is organized as a part of the program of the International Building Fair (IBF) to be held in Brno in April 2004 and within the EUCEET thematic network (European Civil Engineering Education and Training). EUCEET consists of leading institutions of higher education, companies and other institutes from 29 countries that are eligible for support from the SOCRATES program, as well as research centres, professional associations and trans-european associations in the field of civil engineering education. 4 Location Brno, in the historic region of Moravia, is located in the heart of Europe. As the Czech Republic s second largest city, Brno has nearly 500,000 inhabitants on its 230 sq. km (89 sq. miles). Thanks to its advantageous location and its metropolitan character, the city is the natural centre of the area with a concentration of approximately 2,500,000 people. Historically, proximity to the region s fertile valleys in its river areas virtually paved the way for Brno as a crossroads of trade routes and helped cultivate its very rich history. Urban privileges were given to Brno in 1243 and development continued during subsequent centuries. After the city was successfully defended during the Thirty Years War ( ), Brno became the capital of Moravia. In the 19th century Brno experienced rapid development and was a very important industrial centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Substantial growth and allaround development continued in the 20th century and Brno became one of Central Europe s most important centres of business, industry, science, technology, education and the arts. Brno boasts many historical sights of interest such as the Cistercian Monastery in Old Brno, Špilberk Castle, St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, Church of St. Jacob, the Old Town Hall and the Baroque Ditrichstejn Palace. Visitors to Brno also have many opportunities to enjoy a rich cultural and social life - the Reduta, Janáček and Mahen Theatres, a philharmonic orchestra, ballet, chamber and choral bodies, dozens of museums and art galleries, an astronomical observatory, a botanical garden, a zoo, cinemas, fine restaurants and nightspots, beautiful scenery, landscapes and parks, and sport facilities. Brno has grown considerably during the last decades and many former suburbs have been incorporated into the town proper. There are currently six universities that are members of outstanding pedagogical and scientific centres with a long tradition. In 1993 Brno celebrated the 750th anniversary of its urban founding. Currently Brno continues its tradition as an important meeting point of Western, Central and Eastern Europe and as a centre of international trade. The Brno Exhibition Centre, with about 50 international trade fairs and exhibitions held on its premises every year, is closely associated with the World Trade Center Brno. 5 , Faculty of Civil Engineering The Faculty of Civil Engineering is situated in the centre of Brno and with an enrolment of over 3,000 students, it is the largest faculty of the Brno University of Technology. The period of studies at this faculty is five years and the studies are completed by a final state examination. The Faculty offers the following study programs: bachelor study programs, master study programs and doctoral study programs and these study programmes can be studied in six specializations of civil engineering at this faculty: Bachelor and Master Program Building Constructions Building Materials Engineering Construction and Transportation Engineering Water Management and Water Structures Surveying and Cartography Economics and Management in the Building Industry Doctoral Program Building Constructions Theory of Structures Material Engineering Water Management and Water Structures Forensic Engineering Geodesy and Cartography The Faculty also offers the possibility to attend a study program in Building Construction, taught in English, for fee-paying students. At the faculty there are currently about 270 university teachers of which approximately 80 are professors. The Faculty of Civil Engineering and its individual members are actively engaged in research programs with colleagues, educational institutions and companies within the Czech Republic and abroad, and in recent years a large number of collaborative efforts have been initiated with universities in various countries all over the world.

6 Trade Fairs Brno Trade Fairs Brno possesses and runs its own exhibition premises consisting of 16 pavilions and an open-air exhibition area. The company is continually strengthening its position in the Czech and CentralEuropean exhibition market. In 2002, out of the total number of 43 projects, the company organized 40 fairs, 38 of which were held in the Brno Exhibition Centre and 2 were held in Prague. The numbers of visitors from abroad has risen by 0.5% to 6.4%, making up a total number of more than a million visitors, which is a remarkable figure that is continually rising. Also the share of firms from foreign countries increased considerably from 23.3% in 2001 to 27.4% in In 2002, the company invested 120,000,000 CZK in maintenance and reconstruction. Trade Fairs Brno offers, at reasonable and competitive prices, a wide range of services of high quality, ranging from renting out an exhibition area to complete exhibition services. Building Fairs Brno An integrated presentation of the whole building industry spectrum from more than 1,400 exhibiting companies from 21 countries, covering the whole area of the Brno Exhibition Centre, concentrated in one place, at one time, made for more than visitors from 40 countries.
