1 Created by LifeWind International for the Global CHE Network WHEN HELPING HURTS 1: WHY DID JESUS COME? Date: 06/10 OBJECTIVES: (1 HOUR) After working through this lesson, participants will be able to: 1. Describe or draw the world at creation; now; and the new heaven and new earth. 2. Explain why Jesus came to earth. What was the purpose of his living among us? 3. Describe Jesus ministry. 4. Examine how God is calling us to respond. OVERVIEW FOR TRAINERS: This is the first lesson adapted from the book, When Helping Hurts, by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert. These lessons combine CHE principles with the teaching of this book. The lessons may be used by short-term teams without prior CHE training or by CHEs working on community projects. METHOD TIME KNOWLEDGE Poll: Ask some participants to take a poll of the full group Take a poll of the participants: Why did Jesus come to earth? Record your answers. What is the most common answer? 5 Many people will reply something like Jesus came to die on the cross to save us from our sins. ----SH questions---- S = What do you See? H = What is Happening? I. An overview of the Bible Divide into small groups. Each group will make a drawing of one of three time periods: Creation, before the fall (See Genesis 1:27-31 and Genesis 2:15-25) Today (based on your knowledge of your area, or from news reports) The new heaven and new earth (See Revelation 21:1-5.) What do you see? What is found in each time period? What is not present? 20 I. An overview of the Bible A. Creation A. Creation 1. God saw that it was very good. 2. God created man and woman. 3. This lesson is part of an extensive series for use in Community Health Evangelism (CHE) ministries. CHE facilitators skilled in participatory learning methods enable communities to escape cycles of poverty and live as followers of Jesus.
