Salmo 103:3 Él perdona todos mis pecados y sana todas mis enfermedades. POINTS OF EMPHASIS: 1. Jesus healed many people from sin and sickness. 2. We can trust and believe that God has the power to heal. 3. We can pray to God and ask Him to heal us. 4. God forgives our sin when we ask and believe. PERSONAL PREPARATION: In this unit we will take a look at the lives of several people who were in seemingly impossible situations a paralyzed man (Mark 2:1-12), the father of a dying girl (Luke 8:40-56), a blind man (John 9), a group of lepers (Luke 17:11-17) and grieving friends after Lazarus death (John 11:17-44). As you read through these Bible stories you will get a sense of how desperate these people were to be near Jesus. They knew Jesus had the power to heal them; they broke social barriers just to get near Him. They didn t worry about what the world thought of them. They needed Jesus and lived liked they believed that He had something they needed more than anything else. As you prepare to share this lesson with your class, take some time to pray. Tell God about the areas that need to be restored in your life. Ask Him to be your strength and your light in all areas of your life. He has the power over death and He can bring light to even the darkest part of our hearts. Ask Him to show you the areas where you are holding back because of social barriers or reputation. Surrender all of it to Him and thank Him for the provision that has already taken place. God loves His people and is worthy of our worship and our entire lives. As you teach your class, look for opportunities to point the children to Jesus. Model for them what it means to ask for God s help and to thank Him for His answers. Teach them not only who God is but create space for them to seek God and pray to Him. CENTER TIME minutes as the kids begin to arrive Revised: 1/15 1

2 To help the children transition into class, please use a center format at the beginning of each service. Set up three centers in your classroom to allow children options of activities. Ideas include, but are not limited to: 1. Read books on the floor. 2. Color at the table. 3. Play with blocks on the floor. 4. Play with puzzles at the table. 5. Play with Play-Doh at the table. OPENING ACTIVITY 10 minutes at the start of service The following activity is provided to begin engaging the children for the upcoming lesson. As the teacher of your class you have an important opportunity to come alongside the parents of these children to teach them about God. Blind Blindfold (1 per bin) Tell the children that today they will be hearing a Bible story about Jesus healing a blind man. Be sure to explain what it means to be blind to your class before beginning the activity. Place a few toys that belong on the toy shelves on the tables in the room and blindfold one of the teachers or helpers in the room. Have the person who is blindfolded take the toys back to the shelf. When the activity is completed, ask them if putting away the toys was easy or hard when they could not see. Help the children understand that the volunteer for the activity could take off his or her blindfold, but that a blind person cannot see all the time. BIG GROUP TIME please check your classroom schedule Please talk to your class about the purpose of this time to have fun worshiping God together. Give your class practical ideas of what this means (obey the teachers up on the stage; sing and praise God with a happy heart; keep your hands to yourself; etc.). Teachers, you are crucial in helping create a peaceful, orderly environment to worship God during this time. Thank you for your help! (Have the children repeat the Bible verse with you 1-2 times before beginning the story.) We have been learning about some of the people Jesus healed while He lived here on earth. Does anyone remember who Jesus healed in the Bible lesson we learned about last week? (Allow time for answers - give hints if needed). That s right! Jesus healed Jairus daughter! He not only healed her, He showed His power over death. Let s hear another story from the Bible about Jesus healing a blind man. Revised: 1/15 2

3 One day, Jesus was out walking (pat table as if walking). He saw a man who had been blind since he was a baby (pretend to hold a baby in your arms). Blind means the man could not see anything with his eyes. All this man could see was darkness. Jesus disciples asked Him, Why was this man born blind? Jesus told His disciples, He was born blind so God s power could be seen in him. Then, Jesus did something that might seem silly to us at first. He spit on the dirt on the ground and made mud (pretend to make mud in your hands). Jesus put the mud over the blind man s eyes (pretend to put mud over your eyes). (Show lesson picture.) Then Jesus told the man to go and wash his eyes. So, the man went and washed his eyes. Can you guess what happened when he washed the mud off of his eyes? (Allow time for answers.) That s right! He could see! Jesus had healed him! Could you put mud on a blind person s eyes and make them see? (No!) Could I put mud on a blind person s eyes and make them see? (No!) Only Jesus, God s Son, can do miracles and heal a blind man! Prayer Prayer time may not be appropriate immediately following story time. If this is the case, we ask that you be intentional about praying spontaneously or formally with the children at other times during class. Lord, thank You for showing us how big You are by healing this man. Thank You for being our helper and healer when we are in trouble. Help us to remember to sing praises to You when we are happy. Amen. Jesus Heals the Blind Man Healer worksheet (1 per child) Bag of brown scraps to be mud (1 per bin) Tape (classroom supplies) Googly eyes (2 per child) Bag of black and brown yarn scraps or spool of yarn for beard (1 per bin) Have the children color the blind man worksheet, then have them glue yarn on the man s beard. Talk about how blind people touch textures as their way of knowing what something is like. Have the children tape the top edge of the mud cutout over the man s eyes while you talk about how God put mud on the blind man s eyes. (See craft sample picture.) Then they can lift the mud cutout flap and glue googly eyes onto the man s eyes and talk about how Jesus healed the blind man s eyes. ***Have fun and let them do the crafts themselves, as much as possible. This is a hands-on way for them to learn who God is and remember what they learn. It doesn t matter if they place the label or stickers in the wrong spot. What matters is teaching them who God is. *** Revised: 1/15 3

4 **FOR 11:15AM CLASSES WITH KIDS STAYING 2 SERVICES** What s that Sound? Brown bag filled with various toys or items that make noise (1 per bin) Our story was about a blind man. People who are blind can t use their what? (Their eyes.) That s right. They have to use their other senses - like hearing, touching, and smelling. We re going to play a game using our ears to see if we can guess what is in the bag. One at a time, pull an item from the bag and allow children to try and guess what it is by shaking, blowing, rattling, shuffling, etc. When everyone has had a chance to guess, show the children what it is. Was it easy or hard to guess what was inside by only using our ears? (Hard.) Was it easier to use our eyes or our ears to know what was inside? (Our eyes.) SNACK & ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES last 30 minutes Please wash the children s hands before snack time and say a prayer thanking God for the food. As they are eating their snack, please take time to go over the review questions. Review Questions 1. When Jesus was out walking who did He see? (A blind man.) 2. What does it mean to be blind? (It means you cannot see.) 3. What did Jesus put on the blind man s eyes? (Mud.) 4. When Jesus told the man to wash off the mud what happened? (The man was healed. He could see.) 5. Who can do miracles and heal people? (God.) 6. How can you ask God to heal you? (Pray and ask Him.) Can You Find It? 7-10 items (already in the room) First, hide 7-10 items from items already in your classroom. We just learned about how Jesus healed a blind man. I have some things that I placed around the room, but they might be hard to see. We are going to take turns finding the different items that I placed around the room to show how much we rely on our sight. How hard would it be to find these items if you couldn t use your eyes? People who are blind have to find other ways to find things. They use their sense of touch (hold up your fingers) to help them know where they are and where they are going. In fact, people who are blind even use their fingers to help them read! Let s start and see what we can find. Name one of the items that you placed in the room, and allow the children to take turns looking around the room to find it. Revised: 1/15 4

5 Behind My Back Without letting the children see, pick an object from the room and hold it behind your back. Then have the children try to figure out what the object is without looking at it. You may give them clues about the color, shape, etc. Once the children guess the object, show the object to them. You may also take turns letting each child pick out an object while the other children close their eyes. END-OF-CLASS ACTIVITY IDEAS as time allows If you have time remaining at the end of class, consider doing one of the following activities with the children until the parents arrive (or make up your own!). Keep your class s size and dynamics in mind when choosing.! March around the room, reciting the memory verse. You can choose a different leader or have the children do different things (hop on one leg, skip, take turns reciting the verse, whisper, etc) for each lap around the room.! Have children color quietly at the table. You can give them specific direction for their art, such as draw a picture of something you learned in the lesson today or draw a picture of someone you will pray for this week.! Play a game of Memory Verse Telephone. Have children sit in a circle (or around the table). Tell the children that you will whisper a message to the person on your left and that person will whisper the same thing to the person on his/her left. Go around the entire circle that way. Have the last person say what he/she heard out loud. You may need to split the verse into 3-4 word phrases to make it easier to remember. Go over the full verse a few times at the end of a round.! Pray! Ask the children for prayer requests and spend time praying for each one and their families. Let children pray out loud if they would like.
